Leucadia 101 Arty-fact

Good morning, JP.
I had an idea.
What if we could place rotating art on the park marker with the gold leaf cap?...or something.
Art could be proposed on the four panels and stay there for 60 days. The art could be giclee prints on canvas or original paintings painted over the last. New art proposals could be replaced and removed by vote on the blog.
Voting could determine which art work would be replaced, too.
It could be an interesting evolving attention grabbing attraction acknowledging our local artistic character.
Whacha think?

ps. please excuse my draft photoshop example

It might be a mini-monument made for the park. It also fits the profile of a mile-marker, being on California's longest highway. But there is another interesting possibility.

Being that the park was an outdoor place of worship. And temples have Cornerstones. And those cornerstones are usually in the Northeast portion of a congregation. There might be a time capsule in our Roadside Park, inside or below this obelisk in a sealed copper box.

There are people who believe there was a cornerstone of gold to be placed on the great pyramid but that it was rejected by the builders. A foreshadow of the Christ. And not to get too metaphysical, but the cornerstone of the pyramid on the back of the dollar bill has a detached cornerstone with the eye of God in it.

Maybe the city should permit someone to remove the paint, layer by layer to see if anything is painted underneath. I seem to remember the top pyramid portion being green and below that it was white on this one, but can't remember for sure. Maybe someone with a metal detector could check it out too.

If nothing else, maybe we should paint the top pyramid portion gold, organize that late ribbon cutting ceremony and see what happens.

Groovy Encinitas Art Tile Trash Can Database

I confess, I love the groovy tile art trash cans that are all over Encinitas. I never knew how many of them there are scattered around town. The people responsible for their existence have a nice website with a complete photo gallery of the groovy trash cans.

Leucadia Coast Highway Artifact

What is the history behind this object located in the northeast corner of the Leucadia roadside park?

Where? What?

In light of the fact that an anonymous commenter is going to stalk me every time I use the term L101 to describe the Leucadia's section of the 101 coast highway, I was wondering how I should refer to it?

Downtown Leucadia?

LHWY101?

Leucadia Mainstreet?

LPCH101?

Old Leucadia Streetlamp Artifact and the Vanishing 101 Flower Bed

Follow up on previous post about the old 101 streetlamps and the recently vanished center median flower beds:

I think this is the last streetlamp base left on the coast highway.

From the files of Fred Caldwell, the old Leucadia streetlamps:

For some reason somebody decided to stash their trash into the vintage streetlamp base(???).

Winter Rains Tough on Leucadia Small Business

Posted in the comments section:

HEADS UP SHOPPERS!
I spent $100 yesterday at Paper Rose for my Mom's birthday & they were soooo happy! Apparently their sales are so low they will have to close down in a couple of months if they don't improve. SO SAD!!! LOVE this place! The owner told me they have had crowds of people looking & loving it but nobody buys anything. Can't believe it! They have such cool stuff & all these new cute things.
COME ON LEUCADIA, SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS! EVERYONE WHO LOVES THIS PLACE, OPEN YOUR PURSE! THEY DESERVE IT. I FOR ONE DON'T WANT TO LOSE THIS AMAZING STORE. ANYONE AGREE?????

The Paper Rose is in one of the old houses converted into retail on Vulcan Ave, south of Leucadia Blvd. I call this little strip of small business and art galleries "L101 Jr".

The back area is unique and fun.

The First Leucadia Streetscape Workshop

Did anyone attend the first Leucadia streetscape workshop at Oak Crest Jr. High school? I wanted to go but had a prior commitment. Any feedback/thoughts?

I will definitely be attending this one: Community Participation Workshop #1 – Part B: Saturday, February 23, 2008 8:30 am – 1:30 pm at Encinitas City Hall; This workshop includes a walking tour of the project area (participants will be bused back and forth from City Hall to North Coast Highway 101) then regrouping at City Hall for presentations and brainstorming sessions with participants.

Switchfoot's Jon Foreman at Lou's

You may have noticed the big crowd gathered at Lou's Records in Leucadia last week. Encinitas local Jon Foreman from the high profile and popular band Switchfoot played an acoustic set to an enthusiastic crowd. There are a number of videos of the performance (of varying sound quality) posted on YouTube. The different angles recorded by amateurs of the same event are pretty interesting.

In this vid Jon tells a funny story about buying the Boilermaker album titled 'Leucadia' at Lou's.

Larry Himmel Visits Leucadia

Himmel prepares to get funkified.

KFMB Ch 8's Larry Himmel did a pretty good human interest piece about Leucadia tonight, Still Funky After All These Years

Watch Video

Stray Observations:

-The piece begins with a first person view point of driving north bound on the L101, a perspective pioneered by my car cam right here on this blog, heh.

-Barb knows Leucadia well (so intriqued!)

-Are you Biff or Skippy had me lmao. I confess that I loved Larry Himmel's old half hour variety show as a kid.

-Watch for the north bound lycra 10 speed biker spinning out in the dirt due to the total lack of a bike lane.

-"The last of the laid back beach towns." So true. All the other beach towns have been infected with a strange competitive aggressive vibe. What gives?

-"Leucadians say they are from Leucadia, never Encinitas." Hell yeah, I don't even write Encinitas on my return address on my mail. I write Leucadia.

-Final shot includes those pesky orange sandbags, curse them!

Nice story Larry, thanks man!

"Quality of Life" Tax Looms

I blogged about the unfortunately named Quality of Life Tax back in December 2006. It is beginning to surface again and we need to keep our eyes on this beast before it mutates into something larger.

"Many elected officials...agreed that a new sales tax ranging from a quarter cent to a half cent on the dollar is needed,"

California sales tax is already a whopping 7.75% DOES THIS REALLY NEED TO BE RAISED???
