PAUL ECKE III: DOWN IN GUATEMALA THEY DON'T CODDLE PEOPLE LIKE THEY DO HERE, AND I'M NOT SAYING THAT'S BAD, IT'S JUST DIFFERENT. WE HAVE A HUMAN RESOURCE DIRECTOR. I MEAN, MY GUESS IS THERE ISN'T A LOT OF HUMAN RESOURCE ISSUES DOWN THERE, BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMEBODY YOU FIRE THEM AND GET THE NEXT PERSON.

Irony alert. Ecke wants the voters to coddle him and his new housing project.
ReplyDeleteJP, the interviews in your links on this are quite telling. After working 20 years for the Eckes, here, one greenhouse worker was making just over $6.00 per hr. In Guatemala, the workers get less than $2.00 per hr. Wow.
ReplyDeleteVoters need to hold the Eckes to their 1994 agreement. If they want to cease their agriculural operations here, then land goes back to City. This is the same deal they are trying to foist on us again. If you do not hold someone, some corporation, to its agreement, they will surely take advantage of you, turning a heritage of flower production and distribution into capitalization for further residential and commercial development. It is happening in Carlsbad, too. The Eckes/Caltras will be closing down what for many is the beloved flower mart, people come down here from Orange County, too, for their businesses, and homes, and converting it into a multi-story commercial complex.

"The Eckes have agreed to a legally-binding commitment to transfer the ownership of the 20 acres remaining in agriculture – approximately 1/3 of the entire site — to the City at no cost, for use by the community if their agricultural use ever ceases."
This excerpt from Ranch Rebuild website is essentially the same promise as before, but with 20 acres remaining ag instead of 67. This is out of at least 850 acre original Ecke Ranch holdings.
Eleven years from now, Eckes can simply propose another rezoning, another vote, another "opportunity" to liguidate land to modernize. Perhaps they could modernize down to one or two acres where we could go place poinsettias on an eternal Ecke shrine.
We postulate that you are either an artist, or a con artist. The current batch of former flower farmers seem to be more into constructing capitilization context, conquest, and congestion all the while fabricating fleeting flower fantasy formulas for fickle followers.
