10:15am...I was just down there to check out the "decorations" on the statue and then Danny Salzhandler pulls up with a big ol' ladder and starts taking off the stuff. All these guys were yelling at him...I heard "Kiss Ass!!", and "Leave it on, man!".
How original, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Instead of you few numb minded surfers making a fashion statement, go sit out in the water and do your usual gossip/bitch sessions about how misrepesentd you are. J.P. says he didn't have anything to do with this, maybe not directly, but this blog perpetuated it. And how did the media find out about it so fast. All you critics out there get off your asses, raise the money, find a sculptor, spend the next few years putting it all together and show everybody how it is suppose to be done! Oh wait you can't be bothered. Surfs up dude!
I like this blog. It isn't perfect. No one and nothing is.
I stayed away for awhile, because I was busy doing other stuff, but I am glad that JP brings our attention to controversial matters, and gives us info that we are not spoon fed by the City or by the local papers.
My opinion is that some of the posters are trying to bring JP and the blog down, perhaps because leucadia.blogspot.com has been effective in matters such as the defeat of Propositions A and C.
The truth is beautiful, but it's not always pretty.
The video clip interviewing different people about the sculpture is excellent, helps to put the controversy into perspective.
I think some moderation of the blog is necessary because of the destructive and mean tendencies of a few.
I think Bob's headline about "Surf Nazi's" is hyperbole, emotional exaggeration, also. It's too extreme, just as are some of the blog comments were that sparked that headline.
This blog will redeem itself if people continue to post in good conscience, about topical issues that matter to all of us, locally.
Maybe some of you don't care about redemption, or feel you have anything to apologize for. So be it, but some feelings were hurt. I laughed at the monkey vs. robot video, JP. In general, this blog is funny and informative.
The statue has undergone some symbolic hazing and is now accepted by the surfing community. If the Cardiff gardener people are smart they will view this as an opportunity to move forward. This is the best thing that could have happened. The statue was not harmed and the Cardiff Reef locals now feel better.
Anon 11:19, this is a good place for surfers or anyone else to express their opinion. If this sculpture is supported by public monies, we all have a right to comment. When public money is used on a project that many members of the public do not appreciate, they should let the "deciders" know! Change can result. We are not locked in.
The answer is not always, if you don't like it, do it yourself! Because the private individual does not have the financial resources that public entities do, or the time, also paid for by the taxpaying public. Government is supposed to be by and for the people.
We can and will continue to express our opinions, which seem to be, mostly, that the sculpture is not representative of the surfers in our community.

I still find it quite funny that people can have an opinion but not have the balls to post thier name. It would be great if all you people for this lame statue would post your name when you made a comment. That way when your actually out surfing (which I'm sure you don't do) we will know who to stuff.
I just came back from Cardiff Town Center. The place was abuzz with talk about the dressed up surf statue. There were many out-of-towners. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the spectacle.
I was told there was a long line of people this morning taking pictures with their camera phones. Could this actually benefit the merchants if the dressing becomes a regular event and brings in people?
Its a story played out on beaches around the world. Inland kook moves to town and expects instant respect in the lineup. He's a grom so he gets abused. How he handles it will determine if he gets accepted or rejected. Its tough but thats the way it is. He can deal with it with humor and heart with respect for the locals or he can run to mom and cry. I think the kid may just pull it off. After all he must have some soul hes not wearing a leash.
I read Josh Hansens piece. Has anyone and I mean anyone seen this dude in the water? Roaming the store pretty much everyday o.k., working the parking lot sale (?) o.k., stocking the shelves alright but surfing, I dont think so. His dad is a legend, no doubt but josh dont surf.

I blame the Los Straitjackets band. Their special brand of nitros fueled surf tunes makes youth do crazy things. Did anyone else see them at the Belly Up last year? It was a funny prank. It made my Sunday morning dog walk the highlight of the day.
It may sound wacky coming from me, but I don't want the physical statue changed. I would like to turn it 180 degrees and make him doing a backside vertical lip bash though. In that context the statue might actually look really cool.
Or heck, just leave it as is. It's part of the community now.
Watched the local CBS news this afternoon. The station lagged on the Sunday's dressing of the Cardiff statue. The report included a copy of a photo of the statue that the San Diego Onion newspaper web site (and that appeared today's edition of the Onion).
The female reporter reported to the dressing as 'an act of vandalism'. One person interviewed referred to the dressing as 'vandalism'. Other's laughed at the creativity of the person(s) who dressed up the statue.
Now, understand it was the Cardiff Botanical Society (or whatever the correct name is) that went before the Council and had the statue approved. The same person who made the presentation is the same person seen on news footage on a ladder cutting the skirt, mask and halter from the statue Sunday afternoon. Since the statue is now the property of the City of Encinitas, was the act of cutting off the material an act of vandalism? I think not but I'm not a lawyer.
Now, if one looks across Coast Highway, across the railroad tracks and almost in the line of sight of the boy statue one will see another statue that was commissioned or otherwise erected in the botanical garden the Society has done such a great job of tending to the past 8-9 years. This is a 'man' statue that comemorates a local chap (regrets I forget his name) who passed away but was highly regarded by some in the community.
The statue of the man statue is dressed up by citizens (not the City of Encinitas or the Cardiff Town Council) every July 4th, some Haloweens, Christmas Seasons and maybe a Thanksgivings or two. Granted the 'man' statue has not been adorned by a dress or tutu but, the 'man' statue has been adorned multiple times EVERY YEAR since it was erected in the little park.
I have not heard the Cardiff Town Council wring their hands and accuse the man statue dressings to be 'vandalism'. Remember, the man statue is also city property. Therefore dressing the man statue would be vandalism if the same standards used to denounce the boy statue applied.
When is 'vandalism' really vandalism? Does it depend on who is looking at someone elses 'art' or temporary dressing of art?
I know this statue was partially funded by private donations, but also by taxpayer funds. It has me fuming that the encinitas school district can't afford $250k a year to run the elementary school buses when gas is at $3.00+ a gallon and we're trying to reduce our dependance on foreign oil. But an unsightly statue for $120k, that's a no-brainer. When do our city concil members start serving the "community" instead of using tax dollars to try and make us a more "upscale" community and make every decision based on raising our city's appeal and property values? Their pushing out the people who made this beach community what it is!
I have free time on the weekends and would be happy to join in a mass protest of this "piece of art!" Remeber "remove the bars"? How 'bout "Lose the Kook." 2 wrongs don't make a right. I'm sure the citizens(surfers) of Encinitas would be happy to find a tax free alternative to pitching this trash into the dumpster where it belongs. Let's not keep this piece of garbage around any longer. I smell petition.
