You can blame the council, but they could not stop it. Home Depot owns the land. It is zoned commercial. The Council tried to stop it by saying there was not enough parking for their big stores. SO WalMart downsized the store to fit the parking. So, exactly how is this Jerome or any council person's fault?
Word was 10 years ago Wal Mart (secretly) wanted a location on Quail Gardens Drive, and that's why the dark side wanted the library there - to be the foot in the door that changed zoning in order to create another commercial corridor through our city (to accomodate outrageous pensions etc.). And I doubt those folks haven't given up on that plan yet, but at least we have a beautiful library where it belongs and QGD isn't half asphalt and is still fairly peaceful - free of big boxes. Be sure and take your camera to the new Wal Mart if you go to add to the online library of creatures that shop there.
It would be an interesting socio-political study to do a random sample on different days to see how many Encinitans end up shopping at Walmart. The best way to close this thing down is to NOT shop there. That's why Home Depot expo closed. Not enough business. So, for all of you who hate WalMart and what it stands for, I suggest you shop local and not shop WalMart at all.
I have a problem with Whole Food's ethics. What right do they have to make the food cost three times as much as a regular grocery store? You protest Walmart. I'll protest Whole Foods (while eating the free samples).
Walmart Sucks. Just like Jerome Stocks who will be their biggest (in so many ways) shopper. this does suck...... Carlsbad is outdoing Encinitas on many levels. Thanks to our lame council.
"I have a problem with Whole Food's ethics. What right do they have to make the food cost three times as much as a regular grocery store?"
You don't support the free market system? Do you associate with any particular movement or political party? I support the free market system in general, but frown upon WalMart's tactics that are unethical. I try to use those against them.
Whole Foods' prices are obviously wi/in what the market will bear, simply proving that people will pay more for (perceived) higher quality & better employee relations.
Winston, Why does china products have anything to do with it? You have probably been voting for the standard republican or democrat candidate that help create this huge mess. Americans should have listened to Ross Perot over 20 years ago and we'd be in a whole lot better shape than today. But that is an entirely different topic.
Why I won't shop at Walmart?
Answer- I just don't like the presentation and the vibe I get in Walmart. I went in one once in Hawaii to buy a raft and I almost puked. Everything feels and smells Ghetto. Walmart is the store behind Ghetto. You shop Ghetto if you like. There are plenty of ghetto shoppers out there and our City Council is looking to sell out our town to developers to pump thousands more ghetto shoppers into our coastal city.
I don't and won't ever like Ghetto. Its that simple. Walmart and Jerome are Ghetto.
It strikes me that Leucadia, and I guess Encinitas in general, has an inflated sense of what they are. If you asked a random tourist to take a drive down 101 from La Costa to Encinintas Blvd, and decide whether or not a WalMart belonged, I'm not sure if it would come out positive.
Let's be honest, this is what they'd see: wasteland train tracks, crappy old housing along Vulcun, the log cabin apts, run down store fronts, trailer parks, empty weed-infested lots, old motels, and a bunch of car mechanics.
Personally, I don't think WalMart is the biggest issue here. I don't want it here, and I won't shop there, but let's not get carried away.
Jack mentioned ghetto once or twice... Have you ever done an extensive tour of Leucadia west of the 5? Not exactly Del Mar! My house is situated right in between over-crowded, run-down apartments and million-plus dollar homes.
Jack S. There is some concern that Chinese products can be inferior, low quality and or downright dangerous. There is also concern that child labor is used to create such product in less that desirable conditions. There is also concern that because Chinese products are by and large more plentiful and cheaper to buy wholesale than American made products - leaching not only our wholesale market monies to other countries, but putting our own companies out of business in the process. Does that pretty much sum it up for everyone? I voted for Ross Perot. I also watched Mosquito Coast with Harrison Ford. A movie that started off great and ended in peril.
Ryan: If your home is in between over crowded apartments and million-plus dollar homes, chances are the apts as well as your home is million-plus properties as well.
All: Yeah, Encinitas is pretty uppity about Wal Mart. Its kinda cute. If Wal Mart succeeds in its current location, only the customers can be blamed. I'm kinda glad it went on Carlsbad's side of the street to take them off their higher horse for a few years. But when it comes down to it, I mean, no one is really is better than anyone else on this planet. Well, except for hotties.
So we agree. American voters caused America's destruction and it will end in peril. Whelp each dog has its day..... Next..... the sun will always rise. Its just embarrassing that the baby boomer generation sold out the country so quickly..... I guess its because they were the trust fund recipients of the great generation. Like most trust funders they have little integrity.
Most should have voted for Ross Perot and they should have voted for Ron Paul. Most people in this country are to blame because their willing to sell out their kids future for a few more years on easy street. Pathetic creatures you are!
What I can officially say now that Obama and white Obama have secured the candidacies, is I am leaving the Republican party and hate both the republicans and the Democrats. Bring on the ReLoveution, this county needs a serious shake up and getting back to the constitution.

ReplyDeleteBuild it and the cretins will come . .
ReplyDeleteGod Bless America. If you want to pay too much for toilet paper then that's your choice. I'll wipe with the cheap stuff.
ReplyDelete"for all of you who hate WalMart and what it stands for, I suggest you shop local and not shop WalMart at all"
ReplyDeleteAs moronic as it seems, I've actually talked to people before who frequently railed against WalMart yet still shopped there. WTF.
I'll protest in front of it to the extent that the law allows.
This sucks.

ReplyDeleteHH, you don't have any qualms with WalMart's ethics? Hopefully you're just uninformed.

ReplyDeleteLet the person who shops locally at a store which doesn't buy from China throw the first stone.

AGreed. Nothing better than a hotty playing pool at Dukes with no bra on. Nothing better.

Hey Jack,
ReplyDeleteGot any broader brushes?
Why do all Ron Paul supporters sound the same?
Cause we're smarter?
ReplyDeleteChuckling...
ReplyDeleteAnd we're definitely better looking
ReplyDeleteLet's get back to the subject of hotties playing pool without a bra on at Dukes.
ReplyDeleteHH, have you been peeking at my wife again?
I've never played pool at Dukes with a bra.
