These awesome polar bears were made with 10,000 Ecke poinsettias and are on display at The Palazzo in Las Vegas. The white “Polar Bear” poinsettias have an important message to promote awareness of polar bears and the loss of their sea ice habitat to climate change. Ecke Ranch is donating a portion of the proceeds from each poinsettia cutting sold to Polar Bears International (PBI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the worldwide conservation of polar bears through research and education. This event serves as the official launching pad for Ecke’s “Pay-it-Forward for Polar Bears” campaign which benefits PBI.

ReplyDeleteYou don't measure generosity in absolute terms. One's generosity is measured in terms of ones means. The most generous people I know in San Diego are not very wealthy.

ReplyDeleteIt is so amazing to me that these are poinsettias, and they come from one of our own native sons and daughters, the Ecke Family. I would love it if next year we could somehow convince the Ecke's to do something on a smaller scale here in Encinitas.

Ecke ranch does not grow poinsettias anymore. They grow the cuttings which they sell to other operations. The white poinsettias were grown in California.
ReplyDeleteThe post at 9:45 am doesn't make sense. Cuttings are grown at the ranches in Guatemala. Cuttings can be imported into the US and other countries. Finished plants in pots with soil are prohibited. The finished plants were grown in the US.

Copy and paste the complete link, then use google translate if you don't read Spanish. In Mexico the poinsettia is called "flor de nochebuena." The Guatemala article calls it "pascua." Google doesn't always translate it correctly. The word can mean Easter, as well Christmas. The article says 1.5 million cuttings are produced daily and sent to more than 50 countries.
Now that's a lot of production lost in Encinitas.
The potted plants are grown all over the US by many different greenhouse operations and mostly sold locally. Ecke Encinitas only grows a tiny fraction of the potted poinsettias sold in the US.
Sheesh! More of this global warming pseudoscience, ahem, I mean "consensus science"? Is there anyone anywhere not promoting/profiting from this ad hoc GW propoganda? The emperor has no clothes, guys. And he's shivering.
