The city billed this as a "celebration" in its promotion of the event. And yes, there was the requisite cake. It turned out there was nothing to celebrate.
Most celebrants weren't happy. The consultant Daniel Iacofano took a lot of heat from the unhappy participants. Some were even demanding the whole plan be dumped.
Our new City Manager Gus Vina was there, open to discussion and arguing to continue working on the plan. Neither Jerome Stocks or James Bond was there, but the business crowd from the El Camino Real corridor was.
It seemed no one went home in a celebratory mood, not even the consultant, who got very red-faced during some of the discussion.
I often wonder why the City of Encinitas does not hire consultants from our own community? We have many intelligent, street smart and informed citizens who might just possibly do a better job than out of town consultants. We could pay them the same and keep our money right here. Just a thought. Does anyone know why we don't?
