Carlsbad Police State

Did anyone else go through the check point on northbound Rancho Santa Fe Rd, just before the entrance to San Elijo Hills, on Thursday, October 18th?

All 4 lanes of traffic were narrowed down to 1 lane. I thought it was road construction at first but then noticed the dozen or so police cars.

There were two electronic signs, one read "check point ahead" and the other "drivers license and safety" which then flashed over to "inspection" and something about having your papers ready.

About 10 cars were pulled over on the side of the road, mostly yuppie soccer moms with kids in the car. Not illegal aliens of guys who look like Osama, but blond ladies returning from Starbucks.

I didn't get any good photos of the police because I assumed I would be pulled over as well and was switching my digital camera over to video mode so I could tape the experience. By the time I had the camera ready I was waved through.

The searches were obviously random. The traffic delay was close to 30 minutes.

From the constitution of the United States of America:

Amendment IV (the Fourth Amendment)

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

  2. I got caught in this after lunch about one o'clock. The traffic was backed up a very long distance. It was moving very slowly as all lanes merged into a single lane. I too thought it was construction, as this stretch has been plagued by construction delays over the last two years with the road widening and bridge construction.

By the time I reached the checkpoint itself, all vehicles, including a fair number of big trucks, were being waved through without any random checks. The traffic had backed up too much. It's was a bummer because it took so long to pass through.

I returned the same way about an hour later, and the police had given up. Small orange cones were still set up in both directions separating all the lanes. They were spaced together very closely. Lots of cars were changing lanes and knocking the cones over like bowling pins. Cones were flying all over the road. It was a hoot. Still the whole thing seemed very poorly planned.

  3. The major delays you experienced was for your own safety and benefit especially those of you with screaming babies in the car.

  4. Fifteen drivers without a license,or with a suspended license were cited and had their vehicles towed.
That's fifteen irresponsible drivers off the road.

  6. To Moon Mom ...

How does citing someone already driving on a suspended license take them off the road? It is kinda like the women who was recently arrested for her fifth drunk driving infraction in two years. She needs to be in jail or without a car.

Perhaps repeat offenders driving illegally on suspended licenses should have their cars confiscated and sold for their fine.
