These things are a waste of money and unsafe as built. Roudabouts that are effective tend to be much larger with a lot more distance between entry / exit points. The one on Santa Fe has flowers hanging on the tree at all times in memory of a recent death.
The city cannot control drunk drivers. You round about doubters are all wet. They are a very good way to have traffic control and keep the city looking good.
One wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the city. Will there be a lawsuit for the accident at the Santa Fe roundabout? How many accidents have happened at the Santa Fe roundabout? How many accidents at the new Leucadia roundabout?
Same old arguments. It seems you either like roundabouts or you don't. I like both Roundabouts and 4 way stops. Lets put in more at unsafe intersections on Vulcan and HW101. I would love about three more on each. They are now needed to slow the overcrowded cut through traffic.
I like the roundabouts. But the one on Leucadia Blvd needs reflector strip along the bottom. It is virutally invisible at night going west and I'm sure that's why a few cars have sailed straight over the top (as the skid marks show). But I have been a passenger twice when my idiot friends did not yield to cars in the roundabout. Doh! Gotta admit, I do hold my breath approaching them! I did hear the one death on Santa Fe was due to intoxication. I don't believe it is related to the wrongful death lawsuit under the fwy as some assume.
My question is this: When roundabouts are offer such clearly superior traffic flow than do 4-way-stop intersections , why was the decision made to put two of them on Leucadia Blvd. while leaving the Hygeia stop signs in place?(!!) It would have been better for traffic flow if they'd replaced the stop signs with a roundabout and then dealt with Hymettus/Hermes later. That seems a no-brainer to me. In any case, a lot less smog is generated when a car slows to go around an obstacle than when it comes to a stop and accelerates away, so I think they're great!
Fred- the marks on the roundabout are burn out marks, not skid marks. Probably from some joker kid. The roundabout will be more visable once planted.

I hope that railroad crossing and crappy interestion addresses in the near future. Its a major death trap.
Yes, the Leucadia Blvd. railroad crossing is definitely less than ideal. I wonder what the chances are that the city will make a bold move like Solana Beach did and pool a bunch of money to do a grade separation and fix the problem in the correct way? Sure it would be a big project, but isn't it about 20 years overdue?
There are plenty of reflectors. You have to be blind not to see the roundabout if you approach the intersection. If you are blind, its not safe to be driving.
I don't know who stated that "The stop at Hygeia can not be replaced a roundabout until the Railroad crossing at Leucadia is fixed," but I see no correlation between the two. They should replace the inefficient 4-way stop at Hygeia with a smooth-running roundabout as soon as possible. If we wait until the railroad crossing is addressed to do a roundabout we might as well just wait for flying cars to alleviate the problem.
