Robert T. Nanninga, Leucadia Icon

Controversial Coast News columnist, purveyor of good brew at E Street Coffee Shop, political activist and an actor who appeared on an episode of Veronica Mars with Fox news sportscaster C.S. Keys.

Bob mostly writes terrible op-ed pieces about George Bush and global warming, rarely writing about Encinitas issues. But when he does choose to pen about the hometown it always elevates the level of his column and brings out the best in him. If only he would do it more often...

SAMPLE: Taking trees for granted won’t work

  1. Bob should run for council. It would be cool to see one of those paintings next to Danny on the Councilmember portrait wall!

  2. My favorite reading from Bob started with Bobs comment on the Blog "Making the Grade" at Jan 12 3:06 pm.

The string that follows made me laugh so hard, I pee'd alittle bit.

I don't think anything he writes again will top that.

Thanks Bob! You put your heart forward and aren't afraid to speak your mind. Bravo!!!!

  3. Will Bob support Jerome again this election? Bob was manipulated into supporting Jerome four years ago. Can he explain why?

Bob ... you post here often. Please answer the question.

  4. That’s Right.... I remember that... I never could understand why Bob was supporting a Building Industry Association Crony.

Bob - please explain or we will think you have no integrity which is worse than being a coward or a liar.

Remember- honesty will set you free! Whats the story Bob?

  5. Bob's comments are always interesting and thoughtful. He helps keep this blog above the anatomical morass of anons. Keep up the good work.

  6. Before I answer the Question about my foolish endorsement of Jerome Stocks the last time he ran for office, allow me to agree with J.P. George W. Bush and Global warming are terrible things to write about. And yes I would prefer to focus only on our community but having written for the Coast News for approxamately 14years I find that striking a balance between the global and the local in what a choose to address week after week keeps things interesting. But I do listen to my readers, and JP if you want more local stuff than the national I will do my best to comply.

Now as for my endorsement of Jerome stocks in 2004, All I can say I was wrong. First of all There were three seats open and I endorsed only candidates who returned the Coast News approved questionarre. Maggie Houlihan did not seek my or the Coast News endorsement. If she had she would have gotten gotten it.

Now as to why Jerome recieved my endorsement. To be honest his answers regarding parks and and the need for more passive recreation space, ie: trails and the native buffer open space for the proposed Hall Property park made me think there was hope for the redemption of Stocks, and I figured giving him the doubt might sway him to be more environmentally friendly. I was wrong. In fact I was so wrong, I count my endorsement of Stocks the biggest blunder of my journalistic career. I was being naive and Jerome was being a liar. Wishful thinking is adouble edged sword and I got cut bad.

Shortly after the election he and Chrisite Guerin hooked up with Chris Calkins of Carlstas and Ecke Ranch for Prop A, and then started looking at selling of the 11 acres proposed for the native buffer space planned for the Hall Property to Barrett homes for development.

I totally miscalculated thinking revearse psychology would work on the ethically and morally corrupt. I was wrong and have spent the last four years trying to remedy the situation by exposing Jerome Stocks as the lying, mentally challenged, smug monkey he is.

As for supporting Jerome in the next election, that is as likely as Duncan Hunter being elected president. In fact I am already on record saying that if Jerome Stocks decides to run for reelection I will run against him for the seat he now occupies on the city council.

  7. Don't worry, Bob will be running for Council again and again he will be taking money from developers.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Two developers contributed to my campaign in 2002 Dan Reedy and David Meyers. Neither of which gave the maximum allowed, nor were any promises made in return.

  9. Thanks Bob- I might be a coward and a Liar, but you clearly are not.

Thanks for the honest and courage to come clean. You must sleep well at night.

And mostly, thanks for helping expose Jerome for what he really is- A paid crony for the developers and employee's unions.

He is an exact reason why the GOP is in shambles today. Preaches conservatism, but spends our kids and grandkids money and sinks the future of our City.

By your direct and honest reply, you gained a ton of respect in my Book. Plus you definitely have tough skin to post under your own name knowing how deep this blog can . Keep up the great work Bob.

I for one will attend every council candidate forum to wash you expose Jerome for all that he is and is not... and all he has done to harm Encinitas. Bravo!

  13. HI Bob:
Is the art depicted by J.P.in the post, done by you? Fabulous. I did not know that, as Walter would say. I do hope you run for Council.Wouldn't mind having one of your pieces for my psychology office. I will e-mal you via Coast News or see you at E Street.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bob Nanninga, I found your responses to J.P.'s challenge so refreshingly candid. I would vote for you in a heartbeat.

And by all means, keep the balance with local and national.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am left again voting for two unworthy and uncapable canidates if only stocks and Nanniga run. Both do noy deserve votes of the public.

    ReplyDelete
  16. For the love of humanity (and Encinitas) please run against Jerome. He must be neutralized (and I do not mean kiled, so everyone calm down). I know the Coast News probably doesn't let you print everything about him and his cronies, so just do the best you can and keep posting. I am sure more people read this blog than even J.P. may know. In the spitit of Martin Luther King, whose birthday it is today PLEASE RUN.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So anonymous, who do you want to run? Give us some more choices if you don't like the current players.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dr. Lorri, the portraits are by Vanessa Limon. She and her husband have the Art Studio on 2nd St. Both do work on commission as well as teaching aspiring artists.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks Bob: I will definitely have to go see their work. I will chime in and also ask you to run for Council. Jerome is a menace to all of us, and if you can, as Walter said, neutralize his effects, I say Right On!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bob-P.S. from my last post. THE DUDE is also in full agreement with you running, something that does not happen too often, as you may know.

    ReplyDelete
  21. lorri, just suck bob's f-stick already.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What's a f-stick? I am unaware of that term. Please explain. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ah Jerome. You make it so easy to identify you. How many others call Dr. Lorri, Lorri? I am happy to know that you are at least being somewhat transparent. That has not always been the case as we all know.

  24. Surely my intellectual superiors know that I meant Bob's actual columns about Bush are terrible, in that they are too angry and disjointed to read (much like half my post on this blog, ha!), not that Bob criticizing Bush is a bad thing (duh).

My point is that when Bob chooses to write about Encinitas issues he is clear, concise and entertaining.

I like Bob, but would I vote him? I dunno...doubtful at this stage in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Bob, I voted for you when you last ran for council, but when you turned to the dark side and supported Jerome, I was profoundly disappointed.

Bob, I accept your public confession and would vote for you again in a head to head with Jerome. I know there are more details to your involvement with Jerome Stocks, David Meyer, and Doug Harwood. When you are ready to go public with the details, I am ready to listen respectfully to them. It takes a lot of courage to write what you wrote above. Thanks for that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think you have courage and intelligence, also, Bob.

I am glad you have "come clean." Many of your previous supporters were surprised and disappointed, before, when you were temporarily "blinded by the darkness."

I am glad you have seen the light. Jerome is only too happy to stab you or anyone he needs to in the back, but anonymously, of course.

He cheated Maggie out of her turn to be mayor, so he could be in the position he is now in, come election time. His reputation is going to precede him; his karma is going to bite him in the keester.

    Watch and see

  27. why does this dude put paintings of himself up in his own coffee shop?

  28. Why is Mr. Nanninga, a self-proclaimed "white witch" who claims that he works for "the white-light", allowed to teach theatre to school children? Is his religion known to the public of Encinitas? I would not want a person that plays with voodoo dolls teaching my kids or making important decisions for the city.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why should anyone's religion be a determiner of whether or not they are allowed to teach children? If you don't agree with his belief system, then don't send your kids to him. If your kids are not under his tutelage then shut up and let the man do his job. He's teaching theatre for goodness sake! Perhaps you believe that your views are the only 'correct' ones. I'd like to know what you do for a living, and would ask how you'd like to have your livelihood threatened because your belief system and private practices didn't agree with someone in the community. How is life in the 17th century, anyway, you closed-minded fool?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bob was an excellent teacher for children. He understood the essence of life- which most of us adults only find vicariously through drama and poetry both of which Bob taught. He inspired all of us to be community activists. He wanted us to leave our T.V. and come commune with our neighbors to discuss politics, friendship, art, love and all other things that make us human beings. Bob was the best human being. I will miss him so much. Encinitas will not be the same. Even though Bob didn't believe in God, I know he is our Encinitas angel now.
