The Leucadia Blvd coast hwy/Vulcan/train tracks intersection was just brutal this weekend. Total chaos. I can't believe nobody got hurt.
West bound was especially bad. Cars in the right lane wanting go north on Hwy101 were almost running over pedestrians trying to cross the coast highway.
West bound has two lanes, the far left you are supposed to keep turning onto Hwy101, the right lane you can go straight to Beacons. I saw people in the left lane go straight to Beacon's and almost collide with people in the right lane. It was really hairy.
The west bound lights are not in sync. This was causing gridlock on Vulcan. The Vulcan light turns green but the Hwy101 light takes almost a full minute to turn green. People were honking and yelling.
The weather was nice this weekend, just a prelude to when summer starts. That intersection is reaching critical mass.
On Saturday, a women on a cell phone cut me off on the train tracks, moving from the right lane to the left, without a glance, to turn left on 101 all the while with a phone in her hand.

ReplyDeleteMy my whole family almost was killed crossing Vulcan going to the beach yesterday. Those stoplights are so jacked up. Even though we had a crossing light, the guy honked first as to warn us and then turned right into us honking to "rush" us out of the way.
ReplyDeleteThe interestion problems began in 1999 when the City opened Leucdia Blvd. to Olivenhain Road and El Camino Real opening the flood gates to all of Carlsbad and San Marcos. Gosh they didn't think about the problems they would cause in ol' Leucadia did they?
Leucadia Blvd. west of I5 including the RR crossing and HW101 interestion should have been addressed before the opening of the flood gates. The neighborhood has been suffering for 8 years and I don't think you will see much improvment until the issue with the RR crossing is addressed. I predict more deaths and lawsuites.
Is the City going to doing anything to address the railroad crossing and improve the HW101 intersection in the next 5 years?
It is not an issue of them not thinking about it. They knew what was going to happen just like with the Hall Park development and with upzoning around the city. The developer run council doesn't want to have to make their developer buddies have to pay for the true impacts of their development so instead the rest of us either suffer or subsidize people like Mick Pattinson and the Ecke family.
ReplyDeleteNo one was so stupid as to not think that punching a hole out to la costa and san marcos wasn't going to funnel a billion people right into the most screwed up interesection in the city. Just like with all the other scams the council rightly believed that no one would associate them with thier mistakes 10 years later, or they wouldn't be around to be blamed.
Can anyone even remember who was on the council when they decided what needed to be done before they punched road on over to the Ecke Ranch shopping center?

Speaking of Beacons.... Anyone notice all the cobblestone down there? I don't even see the natural sand anymore. Replenish the sand today, save our tourist industry

ReplyDeletewe just had a major wind swell about a week ago. It pulled a lot of sand into the surf zone. It is part of the natural process. The amount of sand that is being considered for dumping would have also been stripped from the beach too.
The sand is NOT GONE! A few south swells will pile the sand back up on the edge of the bluffs.
You should worry about the free sand that won't be. They are dredging the oceanside harbor and not putting the sand on the beach. instead they are putting it offshore and HOPING the sand swims into the surfzone. That is sand that a we won't be getting, a few years from now.
Look at the council members from 1990 and to present and Staff for the problems of Leucadia today.
ReplyDeleteFor each month that council and staff do nothing is another month of evidence for negligence in the upcoming lawsuits. The dangerous problem and the City awareness of the problem have existed for years. The lack of action to correct a known hazard is negligence and will give the future ambulance chasers an easy win. I wonder how many millions will go to the lawsuits? Probably enough to pay for an entirely grade separated crossing at the tracks.
What's the City going to do this year to address the known liability?
I'm surprised the City hasn't heard from the family of the Mormon janitor that was smeared at the crossing this last year. What does the City's Risk Manager say about the situation?

The signals need to be longer west bound on Leucadia Blvd. so pedestrians aren't stuck in no mans land between Vulcan and Hwy 101.After all people walking should be the cities first concern not the people sitting on their butts yapping on cell phones let them wait another 30 seconds and let the locals walk safely. The poor excuse for a sidewalk between Vulcan and Hwy 101 is another problem that needs to be addressed move the thing away from the roadway before someone is killed.

ReplyDeleteI agree with One Eyed Mike- Replace that existing trip hazard, with a sidewalk away from the travel lanes and protected by a guard rail. The kind that RSPB likes so much.

The janitor who was killed by the train got trapped on the tracks because of the busy confusing intersection. The powers that be wasted no time accusing him of being drunk. When the blood test revealed he had not been drinking they rushed to blame his diabetes. He made a mistake but it is easy to make there if you don't drive it everyday. People behind you will honk and try to get you to pull onto the tracks. Don't do it, a train is coming even if you can't see it.
ReplyDeleteA couple of knob heads at a cross street with a stop sign pulled out in front of me as I was heading down the hill west on Leucadia blvd towards the intersection on friday, I gave them a courtesy honk so they would stop pulling out before I hit them and the guy and girl both gave me the middle finger. the new yuppie contingent can get a little testy when they have to wait to cross an intersection. That's ok I saw their truck at Starbucks downtown on Sunday when I was riding my bike and I waxed their windows.

ReplyDeleteDid you ever think that the people coming out of Hymettus never get a clear break from people flying down the hill? They are forced to dart out in the smallest openings in traffic. A dangerous move and one reason something needs to be done.

Let's close Leucadia Blvd at Encinitas Ranch! That would help the Hwy 101 intersection. That would really help - overall. Who is going to City Council with that idea? Yeah!

ReplyDeleteMost of the people who complain about the traffic are the ones who cause the traffic - transplants from scary places, who honk and flip people off and moan about Encinitas becoming like L.A. The reason Encinitas is becoming like L.A. is because people moved here instead of L.A. to avoid the TRAFFIC!! This is a rockin' place to live. No duh people are moving here in droves. If you want to live someplace with no traffic, move some place that sucks. Name a place to live that's awesome and has no traffic. If you can name one - move there, please! One less car on our roads. Otherwise, shut up about the f'ing traffic.
