Sunday's San Diego Union Tribune had a front page story that reports nearly 400,000, or 31 percent, of local jobs have the potential to be moved overseas during the next two decades.
Nationally it is estimated that 37.7 million jobs, or 29 percent of the current U.S. work force, could be outsourced to other countries within the next 10 to 20 years.

Offshoreability of San Diego jobs
It will be interesting to see what happens to the San Diego middle class (and home prices) over the next 20 years.
Overseas you can exploit people even more than illegal immigrants are exploited. In China people work for a fraction of what mexican labors work for in mexico, so even mexico is at risk from globalization. Now we know why all those loony protesters have been gettingin the streets everytime there is a G8 or WTO meeting.
ReplyDeleteChina is not a democracy and globalization will destroy democracy in the long run. We are on the brink of transforming into a world corportacracy.
Can we outsource the city manager?

ReplyDeleteYou appear to be an illiterate idiot. Besides being cold and callous.
Jobs are continually outsourced and new jobs are created. The key to the problem is education and relevant job skills. If kids have a good education and are skilled at something other than sitting on their fat asses playing video games life will go on. Better keep the kids focused on education because its the young people that are going save the planet and perhaps preserve democracy, or perhaps not.
ReplyDeleteOutsourcing ,globalization, etc maybe legimate future threats, but for the bulletproof jobs, you parents might consider the civil service. The strongest non competitive, secure, poliitcal octopus ever growing never ending always controling show up and retire non work place for your kids.Get the benefits be a fire fighter or fighteress a city hall sitter or staffer play the game its who you know. The answer is join now.

ReplyDeleteTo piggyback on Gil's comments, it is also nice to have a business friendly enviroment, if people want jobs. As an observation, sometimes, some people on this blog don't seem all that business friendly! There is a lot of "let's not let anyting change" attitude here, and that is not conducive to job retention, let alone growth. Should we manage change, absolutely. But if everyone who tries to do something is shot down in flames, then we will continue to have job losses, and that is not good for anyone long term.
ReplyDeleteNot all 400,000 San Diego jobs will be outsourced to India but at least half will. The majority of the 200,000 folks who lose their jobs to outsourcing will be college graduates. A degree no longer protects you. San Diego has been sheltered from outsourcing so far but it is coming and coming fast. When companies like Qualcomm start outsourcing half their workforce to India San Diego is going to hit hard times. Don't be smug, outsourcing is coming to town.
