Choo Choo!

Did you see the incredible old steam engine pass through Leucadia today? It was pretty awesome. The train was immaculately restored, just beautiful. My crappy snapshot doesn't do it justice (taken from Karina's taco shop).

It was funny to see so many camped out along the train tracks waiting for the train to come by when usually the cops hassle you for being near the tracks.

Did you notice how much better this train's horn is than our daily trains? Why can't Amtrak and the Coaster use that horn? It sounds like a train should, like part of Blue's song, not like the end of the world.

If you have better photos feel free to e-mail them to me.

  3. I don't think you can blame Jerome for this tidbit, but the NCTD refused to grant permission for the train to come to San Diego in 2005 due to bridge problems. I guess (and hope) they fixed the bridges before granting permission.

From the 3751's website: "2003 ... The trip to San Diego is cancelled since insurance is not available, an attempt to reschedule is planned for the spring of 2005. That doesn't come about because the North Country Transit District is notified by engineers that several key bridges need serious repairs before the 3751 can be allowed to pass." http://www.sbrhs.org/Pages/timeline.html)

Yes Bruce, the brigde at Encinitas Blvd has been reinforced only a few years ago with a very durable green paint. All aboard!

  5. After only 45 mins. waiting while others had been waiting over two hours, the steam engine toot tooted through -- being pushed by an Amtrack engine hauling ass -- but at the tail end was an old Zephyr observation car that was cool too. Kinda sad though, as my kids (11 yr twins) and I biked along Vulcan, we spotted a car stopped next to the tracks with its engine running -- my sons were worried these people were going to gun it onto the tracks and commit suicide. Thank goodness they were only waiting to see the train, not derail it.
