Now that the holidays are over and the festive lights are coming down we are entering several months of the long dark. Driving down the 101 and entering Leucadia in the winter is dismal and depressing. The street lighting is terrible to non-existent and most of the businesses close early and do not have any ambient lighting to make the coast highway a cool place to cruise or walk at night. Once the town settles on a streetscape design I would really like to see some lighting elements installed, especially in the center median. I want old timey streetlamps to line the coast highway like in downtown Encinitas (not the tall imposing streetlights that actually create a creepy vibe).
At the very least our Leucadia sign should be lighted. Sheesh.
However, the streetscape is still a long way off. Are there any temporary lighting measures we can do so that our winters are a little more cheery? What is the most energy efficient and environmental way to achieve this?
I walk at night in Leucadia all the time.
ReplyDeleteI don't like hearing cars. Neptune and Hermes are nice blocks to walk on at night.
Regardless of the lights or sidewalks that they may put along the 101, I will still prefer to walk on Neptune and Hermes.
Leave 101 alone!!!! What is wrong with dark and dreery!!! thats the way us tweeker Leucadians like it...it help my skin.... it also keeps our rents really low.

the business can't because they are broke. That street is blight and the only hope is the streetscape will make it a more enjoyable envirnmemnt where people want to stroll and spend money. Cedros did it, downtown Encinitas did it, Leucadia Encinitas can do it too.

Cedros does well because they have great shops. None of the rancho santa fe customers walk from their homes to get to the shops to consume their $50,000 luxury trophy items that they so proudly display at their garden fundraisers that raise $30,000 for charity.
lights are great, just make sure the city installs break away ones, not like at Santa Fe with the concrete death poles
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if it wasn't so dark. However, I wouldn't expect the businesses to do much. The last I counted there were 7 "for lease" signs between Encinitas, and Leucadia...

I'd love to start a biz on 101 in Leucadia but the rents are too high. Landlords need more vacancy time to wake up to the new reality. They're trying to get a return on bubble prices that is just not possible.

ReplyDeleteRents aren't too high, they are too low on the 101, that why you have such crappy shops. If you want people with money to spend money you have to give them some reason to come to Leucadia.

ReplyDeleteDoes Keno's have good beer? What's that place like? I'm not a big fan of cheap meat loaf so I guess I've always been turned off by their delicately hand-painted "meat loaf on sale" sign.
ReplyDeleteso the streetscape is really all about making 101 cool for tourists and millionaires? Expensive restaurants and shops? High rent spaces? How about a place for locals?
ReplyDeleteMost Ludecadians don't have much money left each month from their government handout or trust fund that their parents set up to spend at an upscale establishment. They spend all their money on medical marijuana, dog food and cable tv. What a dive with a bunch of losers.

We frequently walk to resturants along 101 for dinner. I have not really noticed the lack of light along the highway. What I do notice is the off-leash dogs when we walk through Orpheus Park. And I've never seen any owners with flashlights who are looking to pick up the poop.

ReplyDeleteLeucadia is overdeveloped. Burn 1/2 the homes, bring in more mobile homes and tear out the road and all concrete. Lets get back to the wagon days and more trailor trash. That's my vision for Leucadia. Arizona by the sea. Maybe we could get Octimom on Council. Ahhhh. Leucadia's great.
Articles like this typify the whoooole "streetscape" argument for me. One person has a strongly held opinion on what he or she would like to change about Leucadia. But they don't realize it's just their opinion. They figure it's something that "obviously" needs to be done. Wrong. I like how dark and quiet the 101 corridor (where I live) gets at night. It's peaceful. It's soothing. It's rare in this plugged in world. My opinion - leave it be.

The darkness of Leucadia at night is one of the last honest things on the coast. If you want lights, go to Cedros. Go to Escondido. Maybe you should learn to enjoy the contrast between night and day and realize how lucky we are not to have too much light pollution in Leucadia.
