Capri Elementary to become Dual Language only?

There is a flyer swirling around announcing a town hall meeting at Capri Elementary school, located in deepest, darkest Leucadia, claiming that Capri is going to become a "dual language" school and all the English only speaking kids (white) will be relocated to Paul Ecke Elementary.
Meeting is Tuesday, March 13 at 6:30 pm at Capri.

  1. Interesting. And how did you make this a "white" thing?

    1. What if I have African, Indian, Asian, Arbic, or even Italian in my DNA and my skin is not perfectly "white"? Where Do I go? When did this become a skin color thing?

    2. Are you sure this isn't about how to save the DLI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_language program which is all the rage for "white" Yuppies.

    3. Do DLI programs even benefit the students? Many of my European and Asian friends that are fluent in English were taught the majority of their Education in their primary language and learned a second language as an elective or "special" as EUSD like to explain electives.

    4. I heard the DLI program in Paul Ecke Central (PEC) is producing kids that are falling behind the non-DLI students in most area of their education. Is that right?

Again, Is this program good for the Students? I would think if your kid is going to manage a landscaping, painting, farm harvesting, fast food, or temporary labor companies; then I am certain if its the right program for you. Are top companies in the USA going to be hiring top managers who are fluent in Spanish? What about Mandarin?

Why doesn't the school offer DLI in Mandarin?

    5. I heard the school principal at Paul Ecke Central was not very good for students that are not in the DLI program, tons of parents have requested their children move out of Paul Ecke Central because in part she was directing all her energy and school resources into the DLI, and that she would be the new principal for the DLI program at Capri. Is this true? Seems like a good thing for both PEC and for the DLI, since this is her passion. But then again, Is she even a worthy of being a principal?

    6. Tim Baird brought us the failed bond program, the failed Pacific View strategic Plan, and now this. Is he really the right person to be running our school District?

  2. I threw in the (white) tag because it's the elephant in the room. The gossipy rumor is that white kids are getting kicked out of Capri. The flyer has that vibe.

  3. Oops - Leucadia Blog not politically correct.

  4. I am a Capri parent and I don't want my children to be forced to go to a different school. I would be happy if they consolidated both DLI programs at Capri but let the English classes stay. I think Dr Baird thought up this idea and is trying to get it done way too fast, without proper community input.

I AM AGAINST THE PHASING OUT OF ENGLISH ONLY CLASSES AT CAPRI!

  6. Get rid of the Principal at Paul Ecke Central.... she's all about herself and nothing about a child's education.

  7. This proposal seems ill advised. Is Tim Baird trying to save money? And won't it contribute to greenhouse gas emissions by requiring parents to drive their kids farther?

I'm not against dual language instruction. I wish I had had it as a kid. I'm a credentialed teacher with a bilingual certificate in Spanish. It sure would have been easier to learn Spanish at a younger age.

There's no reason not to have the DLI choice at both schools, if the demand is there. After all this is primary education, and a single teacher could manage all the instruction in the classroom.

  8. I wonder if Dr. Baird can speak Spanish?

  9. How about the loss of 26 teachers?? Let's talk about that! Do you want 27 plus kids in a class?? Our school system is a mess!!!

  10. Can Baird speak Spanish?? Hilarious comment!! He can speak double-talk - essential for an incompetent Administrator. Is there any way to get rid of this guy before he does any further damage??

  11. It's a budget thing. 1 teacher per 18 students is not going to happen any longer.

The government is out of money.

PLENTY of money to bail out homeowners, PLENTY of money for firemens' pensions, PLENTY of money for middle eastern wars, PLENTY of money for Chevy and AIG.

  12. Fire the lemon principal at Paul Ecke Central. She's been the worst principal that school has had in 15 years.

THEN scroll down and read the comments. Baird jumped a sinking ship which he 'captained" for 8 years.

Which brings me to ask: HOW is Gus Vina doing?

  14. Tim Baird is trying to push this change down our throats. Saying it is budget cuts. When only two teaching positions will go. About 150,000. I do not know how you can grow a program like the dli and save money either.

We asked him at last weeks meeting. How much would we have to raise to save our school. Tim Baird said " enough to send me on a vacation". That was so rude and unprofessional !. He does not care that Capri has been a neighborhood school for 50 years. All he cares about is his agenda.

  18. Here's an interesting article on the subject "Why Bilinguals are Smarter" http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/opinion/sunday/the-benefits-of-bilingualism.html?src=me&ref=general
Basically, a number of studies suggest the bilingual experience improves the function that directs the attention processes we use for solving problems. Switching back and forth between languages exercises brain function, strengthening them and making the older brain more resistant to dementia and other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
So maybe this DLI thing is not such a bad idea? N'est pas?

  19. No backing for studies...... seems pretty weak.... Europe and Asia has way smarter schooling then we have now, and they both teach in their primary language and have secondary language classes. They are way ahead of us in the subject. Any learning on the brain is good for holding back brain disease. Learn a language yourself or play music.... if you don't use it, you lose it. To date this whole Duel immersion excursive is just an experiment. And the kids are the data..... I hope you parents were right about Duel Immersion, its only your kids future your messing with.... but we've learned most adults don't care about the future of our youth, because they keep borrowing from their generation with the an unsustainable US debt that will create hardships, well beyond the likings of Greece. You will see major unrest in the USA within 15 years. Bet on in
