It would be nice to have a decent place for live music like the Belly Up offers. No disrespect to the Leucadian or Papagayo who make do with what they have very well.
Everytime I go by the Calypso I'm looking for signs of life. I sincerely hope it gets reopened and retains its former high standards for music, tasty food, and thick atmosphere. Had many an excellent time there. Really wishing they're able to pull it together this year...wishing them the best!
If that were the case, We'd have to tear down about a third of the places on Hwy101 in Leucadia.
Sadly, this is very true. As much as I'd like to see the neighborhood really bloom, you just have to face reality -- the Leucadia business district is for the most part a real dump. I don't expect that to ever change. Oh well.
BTW, when's the next doomed restaurant going to start up now that Jawz has so quickly bitten the dust?

That place is cursed. The issue is the surrounding ambiance and the road is an unsafe hell hole with Cars flying by.
Can you believe some fool spend all that money building that two story office space on Vulcan in the northern train blast zone. That building will be given back to the bank for sure. Another Bad loan for the tax payers.
Calypso was packed all the time. Cars parked up and down and across the highway. It was a rocking place. The right businesses can be successful in the Leucadia corridor. Look at Sake House. Great food so they have a line to get in. Jawz with a "z", nice place inside but Kotija had better fish tacos. Le Papagayo is popular and draws a crowd. The Leucadia Sushi Bar is doing good. Robbie's Roadhouse always busy. The Pannikan is always busy.
Personally... I hope the Calypso reopens... I hope the new Hapi-Fish... aka 101 Bistro, Fish House, BBQ fails. It will be open from 7:00 am till 11:00 pm every day. I tried appealing to the city to stop it... there are only 23 parking spaces of which two are handicap and the overflow parking by patrons and employees ALWAYS ends up taking every available parking space on my residential street. The city doesn't give shxx

Does the L101 or city have an economic analysis that gives a sense of how many restaurants our town can support?

ReplyDeleteYes, and there are currently a handful of truly attractive businesses sprinkled along a mile of wasteland.
Where else on 101 are there so many used car lots, failed businesses, boarded-up ghetto buildings, derelict shacks, trailer parks...? Face reality.
Bright side: at least F St. is gone.
