Ch 8's Leucadia Roundabout Story

Channel 8 news took a break from crime stories, fear mongering about killer bees, panda coverage, "are your children safe?" stories and over hyping the Chargers, to cover the new Leucadia Blvd roundabouts.

Go to the News 8 website,

Look for the News 8 video section and click on Driving in Circles Driving Many People Crazy.

Now that's infotainment!

  1. Did you see the new super blinky light warning you about the roundabout?

  2. Absolutely love the roundabouts. I hope the City puts in about 5 on HW101 to slow down those crazy ass Carlsbad speeders!

  3. Luv em! Put more in!!!!

My favorite line was, "Americans just don't know how to Yield"

I don't know about that....They should watch me; I "yield" at nearly every stop sign.

  4. You don't "yield" at every stop sign, you "stop." There is a difference. I have been driving the Santa Fe roundabout almost daily from the beginning. The poor driver coming on Rubenstein or Devonshire usually has to stop, yielding to the oncoming traffic on Santa Fe, which has a scary tendency not to yield at all, and just come barreling through. And the poor pedestrian doesn't stand a chance with heavy traffic. Yes, we Americans do not like to yield. We are in too much a hurry.

  5. really said;;;

I also drive the Santa Fe roundabout every day. I drove through the intersection for 25 years while it had stop signs. The roundabout is a vast improvement.

There were people that didn't stop when it had signs and there are people that don't yield with signs.

Put more roundabouts around the city. A bunch on hwy 101 would reduce speed, make our city a better place to travel in, and perhaps discourage our I-5 alternate route people.

  6. I love the look and functionality of the Roundabout but I am SHOCKED AT HOW MANY FUCKING IDIOTS DON'T YIELD WHEN I GO AROUND THE CIRCLE.

There are going to be a lot of crashes until they learn to LOOK AT THE ONCOMING CARS IN THE CIRCLE!

  7. In case anybody has trouble finding the video, here's a link directly to the related page: http://www.cbs8.com/story.php?id=111529#
I love the roundabouts and hope to see more, specifically at Hygeia & Leucadia Blvd. We should remove that 4-way stop ASAP! And yes, it is the f--ing idiots that will ruin the reputation of the traffic circles, just like they give the railroad a bad name when do something dumb there. (That was kind of harsh, huh? Sorry - but it's true.)

  8. I don't like the roundabouts. I disagree with the City's assertion in the video that 80% of the citizens support the roundabouts as effective "traffic calming" devices.

People don't yield to the cross traffic. The roundabouts are okay when traffic is not heavy, but then, those intersections were fine, when traffic wasn't heavy, before.

The evidence of road rage says it all. I'm not going to blame everything on Carlsdbad drivers, either.

  9. I disagree with the person disagreeing. I was at the meetings and more than 80% voted in favor of the roundabouts, it was more like 90%. Next time you should go to the meeting and get your voice heard. Too Bad for you. Great for me.

I love them. Great Job City!

  10. Too Really-

No. I really don't stop at Stop signs- I yield. Its called a "California Stop". Stopping is stupid. I take control and make sure its my turn and safe. No harm, no fowl. Plus, we don't have traffic cops in Encinitas. They are all out at night rounding up all the drunks.

PS- I am not the only one.

  11. I run stop lights all the time. Most of the time, the signal timing is so jacked up that its a total waste of time sitting there like a dumb shit. I look around, make sure the coast is clear and go on my way.

Like the person who runs stop signs, I am not worried about cops. When is the last time you've seen a Sheriff enforcing traffic laws in Encinitas?

In that sense, roundabouts are great. non more senseless stopping or waiting.

  12. I went around and around and got very dizzy. I guess the round abouts are something like a circle jerk. Are they going to put a statue of a city official in the middle. Maybe Dalager with a lawn mower or Bond doing a field sobriety test.

  13. Now THAT's something up for discussion... what would Leucadians want on display in the middle of the roundabouts?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. How bout a surf statue for your very own? I know where you might be able to pick one up really cheap.

    ReplyDelete
  15. When are they going to landscape these damn things?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Whatever statue they choose for the center of the roundabouts, don't make it Jerome Stocks - drivers will aim right for it! And, of course, people will blame that on the roundabouts, too. :-)

  17. The City's assertion in the video that 80% of the citizens support the roundabouts as effective "traffic calming" devices

I don't think that question was on the city's survey.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It wasn't on the survey, but the did ask for a show of preference of alternatives at the public workshops. If you want a say in the way things work in Encinitas you better go to Council Meetings and public workshops. Otherwise your concerns don't matter.

  19. The roundabouts are being put in to mitigate traffic. The same as stop signs and traffic lights. We wouldn't need so many more if the three boys on the council weren't pushing so hard for maximum development as fast as possible. What's in it for them?

  20. My son's school bus can barely make it through

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thats good. It can make it through. I saw a big low bodies 18 wheeler make it through without even touching a curb. I also see the faces of the smiling kids walking and riding their bike to school not worried about run over by the speeding traffic.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If that tandem firetruck can make it through, anything can.

    ReplyDelete
  23. This seems like PR spin. I have NOT seen this:

"I also see the faces of the smiling kids walking and riding their bike to school not worried about run over by the speeding traffic."

You've got to be kidding. Pedestrians or cars trying to cross Leucadia, going north and south have a challenge to make it through the "guantlet" to say the very least.

  24. Round-abouts Rock! Maybe we should be asking all those complainers what happened to Woodly Avenue. Oh that's right, you didn't live here when Woodly was Leucadia Blvd's name!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You should try it. I live on Hymettus Avenue and would never access Leucadia Blvd. before the roundabouts. People flew down that road and it was a near death experience everytime. Now it’s a piece of cake to turn both directions and its actually pleasant to walk across the crosswalks. Much safer and much better looking. Look at the statistics. A majority of folk love roundabouts simply because they work!

Please City finish Phase 2 as soon as you can. We love it!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Actually 4:07pm, it was Woodley Rd. ;)
