Leucadia 101 Arty-fact

Good morning, JP.
I had an idea.
What if we could place rotating art on the park marker with the gold leaf cap?...or something.
Art could be proposed on the four panels and stay there for 60 days. The art could be giclee prints on canvas or original paintings painted over the last. New art proposals could be replaced and removed by vote on the blog.
Voting could determine which art work would be replaced, too.
It could be an interesting evolving attention grabbing attraction acknowledging our local artistic character.
Whacha think?

ps. please excuse my draft photoshop example

It might be a mini-monument made for the park. It also fits the profile of a mile-marker, being on California's longest highway. But there is another interesting possibility.

Being that the park was an outdoor place of worship. And temples have Cornerstones. And those cornerstones are usually in the Northeast portion of a congregation. There might be a time capsule in our Roadside Park, inside or below this obelisk in a sealed copper box.

There are people who believe there was a cornerstone of gold to be placed on the great pyramid but that it was rejected by the builders. A foreshadow of the Christ. And not to get too metaphysical, but the cornerstone of the pyramid on the back of the dollar bill has a detached cornerstone with the eye of God in it.

Maybe the city should permit someone to remove the paint, layer by layer to see if anything is painted underneath. I seem to remember the top pyramid portion being green and below that it was white on this one, but can't remember for sure. Maybe someone with a metal detector could check it out too.

If nothing else, maybe we should paint the top pyramid portion gold, organize that late ribbon cutting ceremony and see what happens.

  1. Let's just do it.

Something, anything . . . Too many that shake their fists and whine, "Get off my lawn." If it is a mistake, we do something else. I propose someone do something by the Vernal Equinox, March 20th. On your marks, get set, go!

  2. This idea represents why we love Leucadia. It will make a nice evolving cornerstone to the streetscape. You won't find that sort of spirit in Carmel Valley.

    Let's do it.

  3. I also remember something abput a time capsule that Fred refers to. How could we find out before disturbing this thing? It doens't seem that is was always just white concrete, nut had some color.

  4. Nice pic samples Morgan. And I like the idea of changing art on it periodically.

2 years ago I submitted an idea to the council making it a Mile Marker. North to South it would read MOONLIGHT BEACH 1 mile; South to North BATIQUITOS LAGOON 1 mile; East to West AMAKUSA, JAPAN 4,584 miles; West to East LEUCADIA ROADSIDE PARK 26,000 miles -Scenic Route - or such nonesense.

That idea was turned down, but they did have me make a Mile Marker (for AMKUSA; our Sister City in Japan) that they installed at Moonlight Beach.

In any event, I'd hate to see this thing just dissapear one day like the streetlights in the park; the water fountain in the park; the benches at the park; the Bar-B-Que pit at the park and all the amazing trees that were in the park.

  5. We have to draw a line in the sand. This agression against our community WILL NOT STAND. Let's make sure that this THING, whatever it is, stays put until we can find out more. Google searchers out there begin your work! The DUDE abides.

  6. As I stated before a Local who has lived here over 50 years told me it was the park sign. I know thats not the glamorous time capsule but then again everything isn't the De Vinci code mystery either. He's looking for a picture as we blog.

  8. ENCINITAS ---- A goal-setting workshop that two City Council members demanded in January is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Ave.

In January, the annual review of city goals was presented as a single agenda item at a council meeting.

That short-changed residents, councilwomen Teresa Barth and Maggie Houlihan said at the time. They said the city should have continued its practice of debating goals at workshops, where the council, department managers and residents gather at a round-table to exchange information and ideas.

Mayor Jerome Stocks defended the abbreviated format because the city is in the middle of a two-year budget cycle.

Wednesday's agenda includes an update on existing council goals, a review of capital projects and their financial status, and a discussion of future goals.

  9. OK, so let's play out this little game at the Roadside park... Who is going to decide which artists get their work on the cornerstone?? Ohhh A committee!!! Well who forms this committee?? Ohhh a bunch of non-artists!! What's that you say, there will be artists on this committee also. Yeah right!! From what I've seen of local art there isn't much to be excited about. but I'll play along... not much of a canvas is there, so the art will have to be quite small no?? Or will certain artists be given more than 1 side to work with?? Will one artist be allowed to paint all sides?? What happens if the art is "tagged"??
Will the artists be paid, most artist like to be paid, I know I do...
Until these questions are decided I don't think ANYTHING should be done to the cornerstone. I for one will not be putting MY ART on this cornerstone, unless I have total control over what happens to my art!!!
There are too many unanswered questions with this idea, it needs reworking, perhaps a committee should be formed to come up with a workable solution and then submit this idea to the city art commission!!
Until them there are just too many questions!!! Too many questions!!! Too many question!!!

  12. Carlsbadcrawl definitely supports your idea of turning this monument into a public canvas.

Voting for rotating art is an exceptional idea. Your site would become a forum for future proposed art...great idea for participation, involvement and the creation of culture!

  13. I have a call into the San Dieguito Heritage Museum. I believe this marker is historic and can not be touched, moved, painted nor defaced in any way!!! The SDHM will decide what happens to this cornerstone if any.
Shame, shame, shame on those that want to change our history for some silly art.
My art is the best for I am the painter of light!!!

  14. The San Dieguito Heritage Museum only seem to handle termite ridden buildings and rusty farm equipment.

  16. Sometimes less is more - how about a fresh coat of white paint and leave the art to the banners.
