More obstacles to traffic flow in the name of improvement.
"No turn on red" signs (in addition to traffic circles) are another bad memory from 4 years spent on the East coast. Seems like they'll give the people everything except what they actually need and want (i.e., Sidewalks).
I'll 'fess up and admit that I now live in Cardiff. The problem is the same there: No Sidewalks (even in the "walking district").
I used to live in the south end of Leucadia near the beach and it was great: Sidewalks everywhere. Walking was a joy, not a challenge.
By the way, when I moved into that neighborhood, the realtor said that it was 'okay' to use "Encinitas" as my address instead of "Leucadia".

Why on earth would we want to use public property (the sidewalks used for walking) to enrich privite restaurants to profit (selling booze) so that more people can get in alcohol related crashes?
Encinitas is just asking for a lawsuit if it condones and supports alcohol to be sold on the sidewalks and then someone gets killed or injured in a crash after a bottle of wine on the patio.
Private property and private restaurants can do what they wish but public property, especially sidewalks are for the public, preferable to walk on, not the enrichment of private restaurants that take over the public space.
I cant belive Bob is serious in saying that sales tax is the reason to support this.
I think restaurant patios on the sidewalks are great. What is the difference if alcohol is consumed under a roof or not. Paris is beautiful, but Encinitas is nicer. We don't have the dog poop problem that requires City staff to clean up the streets every morning at 4:00 a.m. In Paris, the street cleaners dress in really gauche raunchy green uniforms and use the same color brooms, and drive huge pooper scooper street sweepers colored in the same hue -- for a city known for its fashion the street gangs were cut out of the budget. Besides, the daylight here only last until 8:30 p.m. when most people stop walking downtown, so why not have restaurants utilize the space and create more income and revenue, especially now that shopping via SUV is being curtailed. If the climate will allow it, then the people will come.
I forgot the theme of this post. P.S. nice poinsettia, it's not a miracle as these plants are perennial and the bracts are not flowers that fall, but leaves that are colored.
Close two lanes of first street through Encinitas. Expand the sidewalks to encompass those lanes and RENT the space to the restaurants for food and beverage service. Go to San Jose and they have several areas that have done this and it is a great place to walk and eat.
Hey 7:11 what a great idea. Let's back up traffic even more. How dare someone think that the roads are meant to drive on to go places instead of being a tourist attraction. Not everyone shares your perspective especially those that have somewhere to go. Get out of your bubble.
