North County Times Attempts to make Encinitas City Council Race a Republican vs Democrat Thing

northcountytimes.com: ENCINITAS: City Council race is one to watch

Stupid quote:

"It is going to be an interesting election because Encinitas is basically split down the middle with traditional Democrats and traditional Republicans each holding 50 percent," said local political watcher Mike Andreen.

I guess there are no third party members in Encinitas and I guess citizens of Encinitas only vote the party line?

Bond, Stocks and Councilman Dan Dalager make up the conservative block on the council; Houlihan and Councilwoman Teresa Barth are viewed as more liberal. Stocks is now serving as the city's mayor; the largely ceremonial mayor's post rotates annually among City Council members.

Bond, Stocks and Dalager conservatives? Oh really? You might want to check their policies and voting records.

Teresa Barth may be viewed as a liberal by the media, probably because she is environmentally conscience (wanting to manage your local environment and resources is a very conservative value in my opinion) and Barth is without a doubt the most fiscally responsible member of the council.

But, in 21st century USA the talk radio screamers have redefined conservative vs liberal into some sort of strange Yankees vs Red Sox ideology.

  2. Definitely. A 5.8 was centered near Chino.

  3. There was a slight pre-cursor moments before... and then it shook maybe 5 seconds or so-

  4. What in the sam hell are you writing about dadgum earthquakes for? The posting was about politics. I hope Tom Brown throws his hat into the ring. He is a very smart guy. Long is a Dalager hack without a life. He is always at council meeting to show his face. Life has to be more interesting than every meeting. Nanniga is a nice guy but has too many axes to grind. His distaste for Stocks may prove to be too much of a distraction.

  6. ah yass...the politics of fear, and Andreen knows EXACTLY what he is doing. He's trying, (or has been coached), to make this a Rep vs Dem race, and anyone with a brain knows this isn't so, but a lot of people are totally stupid and will believe anything they read i the so-called "media".

Back on topic, please. Gee, first poster, are you gonna comment about the sun setting tonight as well? If you have a bad dream, please, let us know all about it.

  7. Figures the lowly nct would fall for Andreen's bait.

  8. JP- If Teresa Barth was environmentally conscience then there would be porta potties at Beacons beach, but there aren't, so hundreds of beach goers have NO choice but to use the ocean as a toilet. Imagine 500 tourists renting hotel rooms in Leucadia and flushing their daily waste directly into the ocean. You and BOB and surfrider would be screaming up a storm of protest, but 500 beach goers to Beacons every Sat and Sun, what do I hear?? Not a peep of protest!! So much for her environmental conscience. Have her give me porta potties at Beacons and I'll find a little bit of respect. Until then I'll just have to remember her telling me that she wants to maintain Leucadia's "unique sense of place". Whatever that's supposed to mean, but I think I know....

  9. Porta potties smell and look like shit. Plus they attract Bums.

I would not walk about a 200 foot bluff to go pee in a porta potty, when I get to pleasantly go in the ocean and get cooled off at the same time.

The porta potties are not needed or wanted.....move along bums there's more booze down in Carlsbad.

  10. Anon 3:18 is right.
What beachgoer is going to step inside a hot, stinky, festering, bacteria-ridden porta-potty?

If you need to drop a load, RSPB, visit Kotija Jr. They have a bathroom, and I think it is open 24/7. You might have to buy a few taquitos, but I'm sure your disability benefit will cover it.

  12. My distaste for Stocks? Am I alone in my belief Jerome Stocks does not serve the best interests of Encinitas residents?

Too many axes to grind? If you consider a clear lack of environmental planning, wasteful council decisions, the fact the last two councils have done nothing to start the long process of undergounding the LOSSAN rail corridor through Encinitas as axes, then guilty as charged.

I love how anonymous persons feel they have the right to attribute intent to my actions and put words in my mouth while refusing to post using thier name. Perhaps like Andreen they too have propaganda to fling, yet unlike Andreen they lack the courage and integrity to stand behind thier words.

  13. I walk every day. It takes me one hour to walk to Beacons.

I walk there on most Saturdays.

I can hold my pee until I get there.

    I walk every day.

  14. "local political watcher Mike Andreen"

Bullshit. Andreen is a paid political hitman. He is not very good at it and that is why he doesn't get paid very much.

  15. "I would not walk about a 200 foot bluff to go pee in a porta potty, when I get to pleasantly go in the ocean and get cooled off at the same time."

Nuthin like someone who thinks the convenience of spewing their raw sewage directly into the ocean is a good thing. Talk about filthy, lazy and inconsiderate. Remind me not to go to the pool at the Y with you. May the fleas of a thousand piles of sea weed infest your armpits.

There were porta-potties for years at Beacons. Now they're not needed?

  16. Peeing in the ocean or brush is okay with me -- hell, we are in a drought. Shitting in the ocean or brush is definately foul. Anybody who shits in the ocean or brush should be fined. I think the City needs to pass an anti-shitting ocean/brush law. I believe the Republicans will oppose this as it makes too much sense, and the Democrats will support it as it serves environmental concerns. Then, there will be the independent intelligent thinkers who support what is right, fair and the least smelly alternative.

  17. Peeing is the about as foul as spitting.

    Laying a log is fifthy.

There is no way you would get people to walk up the 200 foot vertical cliff to get into a discussing stinky germ infested poop laiden porta potty and then have to walk all the way back down to the beach to go pee.

    Its not going to happen.

The porta potties were removed because the general public did not use them. Only Bums and they were constantly vandalized.

Must people can think clearly on this issue. But not Bums.

Porta Potties would be shitting on Beacons Beach and the whole Neptune experience. We wont let it happen.

  18. At the moment Bob it is for actual survival reasons that I don't post my identity. I do in believe that you are a very good person. You do have passion and the courage to put yourself out there for the communities best. Yes Stocks has let down Encinitas. Put forth your vision without putting his name to it. Just a thought.

  19. Bob,

I always had the impression you were an environmental whack job, however, in reading your posts on this blog I am slowly changing my mind. What are the issues you are sensitive about?

    How do you stand on:
    lowing the train tracks
    pacific view school
    Hall property park
    New fire stations
    plastic bag ban
bike lane on 101 through leucadia
    City staff salaries and benefits
    Consultants versus staff
    open meetings
    Rail trail
    Rail under crossings
scripps expansion and impact on surrounding properties
up-zoning with out a vote of the people
a city wide bond for rooftop PV cells
a citywide bond for under grounding utilities

  20. In the spirit of brevity I have kept the answers short. I am open to meeting with residents individually or in groups to discuss these issues at length.

    Q:Lowering the train tracks?
    A:Underground and covered

    Q:Pacific View school
A: Naylor Act = School House Historic park

    Q:Hall property park
A: It's time to stop wasteing time and money and build the damn park

    Q:New fire stations
A: The old ones are ghetto. New ones should be cost and energy efficient. And the Cardiff station should be moved to a less constrictive location.

    Q: Plastic bag ban?
    A: Absolutely!

Q: Bike lane on 101 through leucadia?
    A: Long overdue

    Q:City staff salaries and benefits?
    A: Non sustainable

    Q: Consultants versus staff?
A: If staff can't do the job replace the staff with those who can not consultants.

    Q: Open meetings?
    A: At all times.

    Q:Rail trail?
A: On top of undergrounded LOSSAN Rail corridor

    Q: Rail under crossings
    A: Boondoogle. Absolutely not!

Q:Scripps expansion and impact on surrounding properties?
A: All traffic should enter and exit on Sante Fe, not into the long established residential neighborhood.

Q: up-zoning with out a vote of the people?
A: All zoning changes and changes to the general plan should be brought to a vote of the people. No exceptions!

Q: A city wide bond for rooftop PV cells
A: Solar is good but should not be forced on property owners.

Q: A citywide bond for under grounding utilities
A: Worth exploring, as it would improve views and property values, enhance tourism, and make Encinitas a truly 21st century city.

  21. What's up with the NC Times "comments"? They have to review them before they'll post them...I wrote something SLIGHTLY critical of Jerome-it certainly wans't rude or slanderous, and they wouldn't publish my comment on their blog. (I'm sorry I have to post this anon because when it comes to Jerome, "an elephant never forgets").

  22. My info is that Teresa is an "independent."

I think the NCT reporter who quoted Andreen was being somewhat naive when she took Andreen as a reliable, OBJECTIVE source.

I do hear that Andreen is not supporting the sand tax on short term rentals under three units, this time around.

It failed to pass by the required 2/3 majority, before. Council was asked to wait until November, instead of running the ballot measure in June. They wouldn't.

Teresa and Maggie did subsequently vote to wait before putting this poorly written measure back on the ballot again, this time.

Council is supposed to be a "non-partisan" office. It is worth noting that Stocks is a tax and spend Republican and has been deceptive and secretive, an irresponsible representative.
