Life is better with roundabouts. Classic. Step 2 is the problem when there is heavy traffic. You will be sitting waiting to get onto the 101 for a long time during rush hour. Roundabouts do not equal no sitting.
Roundabouts suck. Look at all the skid marks at the entrance to them. Look at all the damage done to the signs, lights and fire hydrants. Tons of cars have hit the curbs causing thousands of dollars of damage to their cars. Ask them if they like roundabouts. People die from roundabouts. Pedestrians have a much better chance of getting hit by a car in roundabouts. Move to Europe or down under or TJ if you love them so much. I'm sure you will fit in.
Where do you get your facts from? My information from the national transportation safety board directly contradicts your statements. My experience directly contradicts your statements. In a nut shell you are full of poop.

Look at the statistics in encinitas. Every crash has been from a drunk... the guy that closed the bar and fly through the roundabout at 70 mph and had a light pole crush his skull, made some really bad choices... we are all lucky he didn't kill some innocent Encinitians and only killed himself.
Well 11:07, round abouts are safer for cars and bikes and walkers, more efficient, ecologically sound and offer oppertunities for landscape beautification. As for the tire marks, look on any freeway to see tire marks on almost every one of those white concrete road dividers when the road turns right. That is scary. Should we get rid of all the freeways?
I thought you were supposed to barrel thru like there is no tomorrow and no other human on the planet...at least that is what I keep witnessing at them that roundabouts....

But I swear, after driving the ones in Bridrock, on Santa Fe Drive, on Leucadia Blvd; they have become an absolute joy compared to stop signs. I frequently imagine skiing down the mountain when I cruise through them. Takes a little getting used to, but for me they are clearly better. Not even remotely comparable to the free for all that occurs at the big roundabouts down in TJ; these residential types time has come. Go drive them a few times and tell me they are not a significantly better solutions to long lines backed up at stops signs.
I drive the Santa Fe roundabout almost everyday. I have never seen it jammed up, and I have never seen anyone have much difficulty negotiating it. Personally I like them better than stop signs or signals. Just my 2 cents.
You suggest that we should ask the opinion of the people whose cars have "suffered thousands of dollars of damage" from hitting the roundabout curbs. I would submit to you and the blog audience that if a person is sufficiently driving-challenged as to be unable to negotiate a slight curve, then her/his opinion is irrelevant. A driver can only be one of a few things if he/she actually hits a roundabout: drunk, speeding, or generally incompetent. In any case, the rest of us should not have to give up roundabouts because of idiots who can't form a mental strategy of "how to drive slightly to the left for a second". Look at NASCAR - those guys successfully drive left at high speed all day long, and they don't seem to be the sharpest tools in the shed. So all of those roundabout skid-mark contributors can kiss my round-a-butt.

I completely agree with Dr. Lorri and look forward to a safer, more beautiful, more peaceful and more enjoyable Leucadia Mainstreet. When I enjoy hanging out in an area, I spend way more money in the area.

I was doing a poor job of differentiating between downtown TJ roundabouts and those in the streetscape plan. Actually, a major objective of he plan is to change the nature of the road from what was a highway, to one going through a village. So yes, much more residential in nature.
They work on Santa Fe and Leucadia, both single lanes, BUT 101 will be 2 lanes, a BOTTLENECK to 1 lane, then the roundabout. Bottlenecks do not work, 101 is not lower Santa Fe, gee, have you seen the plans, bottlenecks and and lots more pedestrians/cyclist who will enter the roundabouts and stop the whole flow. Make change, not misery.
Folks, there are several issues at play: 1. There will be people (even if they are all from out of town) who will not know how to navigate the roundabouts (RAs). Even locals show bad judgment. But this is not enough of a reason to dismiss this type of traffic control...
2. Bottlenecking from 2 lanes to 1 is a big issue along 101 with its traffic load. This has not been addressed.
3. 101 currently has no traffic calming with a 40 mph speed limit. Let's calm traffic by other means that won't cost as much nor take as much space as RAs. Meander the road, speed limit to 35 mph, narrow lanes, increase tree canopy, possible raised crosswalks, flashing lights, bulb outs, etc.
4. More extreme calming ignores the problem of the Leucadia Blvd. intersection and potential overflow traffic to Vulcan Ave (overflow due to percieved congestion is the same as that from actual congestion). More energy needs to be spent on those items with an eye to pulling some 'stimulus' monies.
5. Both of the last two "options" (4A & 5) overdo the street redesign. The major problems are: 1) Diminishing tree canopy, 2) Speeds over 40 mph, 3) ped/cyclist access/safety, and 4)Blight. Let's stop the antagonism and re-acquaint us with the "problems" along that corridor.
If RAs are the solutions to many of the problems, then why is there only one south of Leucadia Blvd? Because of topographical/space constraints! So, they are not necessarily in the plan for resolving speeding if the worst areas are not being dealt with. At least plan 5 helps that part of 101 more than 4a with dreaded traffic lights.

there should be more roundabouts south of Leucadia Blvd. and they really do need to address the Leucadia Blvd. intersection. The Leucadia intersection is a nightmare for pedestrians and bikes, let along cars.
Bottle necking on 101 is NOT an issue. You have 2 lanes becoming one lane both north and south on the 101 just south of SRF.. Traffic result=NO PROBLEM!! And I don't hear that whiny LA firefighter pissing about those lane reductions.
Roundabouts work. Learn to drive them and stop your pissy crybaby rants.

Life is much better when your not sitting their staring at a red light making it illegal to proceed with caution.

even a gecko can easily travel through a roundabout. Its such a natural feeling.

Only Leucadia glass trucks drivers can't negotiate a roundabout. Butt they SUCK anyway!!!
