This is one of my favorite parts about this site. I got an email out of the blue from local artist and surfer Juan Flores. He stumbled onto the site and sent me these images of his work. I was really impressed. They are fun and of course I always love art of Leucadia and Encinitas. I really love the lineup point of view as well. I think a lot about how beautiful our bluff line is as I wait for sets. I've always wanted to take a picture of the bluff on a good day but a) it's a good day and I'm surfing. b) You need a good long distance camera to get a good shot. These paintings are cool because it gives you that detail and color from a higher point of view which lets you see the surf and the bluff. I dig it. Great work. ReplyDeleteAmazing. Now I know what surfers see when you ride those waves. I only wish surfing was part of a "girls" culture when I was younger. We were supposed to sit on the beach, get a tan, and act sweet to the boy surfers. Gidgit was our heroine.I am so happy times have chnged. You go girls!
ReplyDeleteWhen is the city going to build safe access to the beach at Beacons?? It's a death trap.

ReplyDeleteBeacons beach trail is an ILLEGAL access to the beach, there is NO ADA compliance. Comply or face the wrath of lawsuit, lawsuit, lawsuit. I will be contacting the Coastal Law Group regarding this illegal trail to beacons.
ReplyDeleteCoast Law Group here. While the ADA may require certain improvements on municipal property for beach access, that doesn't mean the existing Beacon's access is illegal as it stands. With additional improvements, there may be a trigger, but given (a) the historic nature of the existing trail and (b) the fact that it is "natural" and not significantly improved, I think it would be difficult to say that ADA applies.
ReplyDeleteThe Encinitas Lifeguards do a good job at Moonlight when someone in a wheelchair would like to go swimming. They have a special chair with baloon tires that allows the disabled access to the water. It would be almost impossible to make Beacons accessable to all disabled.
ReplyDeleteDisabled people have the right and we have the moral obligation to provide the same access to public facilities as everyone else. So let's either make it accessible to the disabled or close it.
ReplyDeleteMarco- I suggest that you familiarize yourself with Beacons before you set out to say the ADA does not apply. The city has made significant improvements to Beacons over the years including re-aligning the access to the beach and shoring up the trail with railroad ties and steel I-bars.
ReplyDeleteTake these improvements to the Coastal commission and they will require ADA access. The beach, including Beacons is for EVERYONE, not just those with arms and legs.
When is the city going to install a slide at Beacons? Wheeeeeeeee!

ReplyDeleteWhen J.P. did his survey on whether or not you all wanted bathrooms at Beacons, the majority said NO. So, what's up? That's why I did not take it to the Parks and Rec. Commission, as I thought you didn't want them. Not that the City has any money to do it now

The Beacons path rebuilding began when locals started to do it on their own after the north top of the trail collapsed.The city was going to stop our efforts until they saw that Tim Flannery and Bobby Beathard were with us working on it.Not wanting any bad press, the city let us continue and supplied sand bags ect. to assist.This would not have happened if 'famous' people weren't involved.It just shows what shallow assholes city managers can be.

Way to take a blog post about an artistic celebration of our coast and turn it into a series of largely ill-informed, childish complaints. I'll bet the powers that be will be looking straight to the comments made here by a bunch of people too lazy or cowardly to use their own names when they decide what to do about the beach access at Beacons. Again, well done!

I still think these are amazing pictures. I would love to be able to surf and see it from a surfers perspective. It sort of puts everything into perspective, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the majority of us mean? When we were all so concerned about the city cutting down the tree. We might of had 10 whole people attend the city council meeting and we still don't know who gave the order to cut it down (Teresa or Maggie can you give us an answer). I think were giving ourself too much credit!
ReplyDeleteSorry David, but I believe it is very important to set the record straight when someone gives the city credit, (or no credit), for doing something. There's nothing wrong with telling the truth. Besides, no topic EVER stays on topic on Planet Blog.

We don't have to be manipulated with fear. People with disabilities don't expect for every pre-existing trail to be wheelchair accessible. Yes, Dr. Lorri, the majority of people do not want restrooms at Beacons, because that would put more pressure on the structure of the hillside.
Stonesteps and Grandview are not wheelchair accessible, nor Swami's or D street. We are not going to install bathrooms at every public beach access. A few property owners who rarely go down the trail at Beacons, but like to feel powerful, are pushing for this.
I do agree that undergrounding the tracks is important, not the bogus tunnels which the City is calling "bridges."
In fact, the Planning Commission gave the go ahead for the City's development plans with a negative environmental impact finding, with certain mitigating conditions.
Now Council, through the City Manager, is having staff appeal the Planning Commission's requirements for approval. Again, Council is not allowing the Commissions to work. The various commissions should serve as checks and balances, otherwise Council sits in tyranny, as judicial, legislative and executive branches, or judge, jury and executioner.
Dan gets to be the "Master of Ceremonies," as Deputy Mayor, for SDWD meetings, and now, because Maggie Houlihan is attending by phone, for Council Meetings. He will also be mayor next year. Not fair for him to act as Mayor two years in a row.
