The 2 Chambers and my challenge to them

Encinitas now has two Chamber of Commerce's :

Encinitas does not have a multiplex movie theater or a bowling alley. But we do have lots of newly vacant retail space. Get ready, get set, GO.

*By the way, letting the Mac store go into Carlsbad's parasitic shopping center The Forum was a massive FAIL on the part of the ECC. Let's do better than that folks.

1. Do any of the new chamber members know what Andreen did to the financials of the old chamber? If they did, they wouldn't trust him with their dues.

2. Encinitas didn't "let" the Apple store locate in Carlsbad. The demographics of Carlsbad (size of city, average income of residents, quality of other stores in the Forum) were what drove the decision.

Face it, Encinitas is more Radio Shack than Apple.

Don't tell me to "move back to (insert name here)" - I was born in Encinitas and will cap on it all I want.

3. Encinitas needs classy stores. If we had a Forum like place, our demographics would support it. Carlsbad and Solana Beach have foresight - we do not.

I hope Whole Foods is an example of things to come.

5. Couple of points:

Chambers: Would suggest a little look into how the new chamber came to be. Why associations ended & who is really looking out for the business/local community and who is self serving.

Apple: ECC worked to try to convince Apple to move store to Encinitas. The decision or finger of responsibility falls to: Location within a Upscale Brick & Mortar venue & like shops that fit within Apples Brand Placement.

Number 2. The City, ie tax incentives etc. to locate within their limits.

Bowling & Movie - Both the ECC & the city, community wanted the El Camino Theater to stay, but decision was property owner's and the theater chain. Property owner wanted more lease rent - theater did not want to pay escalated lease.

You know The Paloma Theater on 101 is a eclectic, historic local venue that shows a variety of films, lets show them some love and visit there! Plus, make it a date and eat at any one of the 101 eateries.

Hind sight - property owner probably regrets decision two of the stores that took up the theater spot - one closed the other poor sales & can see them moving out.

6. The empty massive Home Depot Expo building is perfect for a movie theater.

The La Paloma is great but they need new seats and a new screen.

A lot of people think that the Forum is in Encinitas.

7. I have an idea. How about we ask the owners of La Paloma if we, as a community, could help fix it up a bit on the inside. We could have a campaign designated for the restoration of the La Paloma. It could be a community project. I love that theater and would hate to see it leave or be made into a mall theater. However, it does need a bit of work. Anyone know the owner?

8. The La Paloma is fine. Leave the owner alone. Except for maybe the missing tiles on the ticket booth that are evidently souviners taken by people from Carlsbad, it's pretty much authentic. A lot of people liked the "beds" that were on the outer isles in the 70's. But that was before some genius invented Nachos.

9. We all the love the La Paloma for it's surf movies, concerts, poetry slams, student plays and sometimes they even show indie films. But the reality is we are sending a ton of tax revenue to Carlsbad and San Marcos by not having a multiplex.

10. SO - WHAT IS 'THE BIGGEST THING EVER TO COME TO ENCINITAS' ???

ReplyDelete
11. 10:51 The multi-plex we had on El Camino Real couldn't support itself. But of course it didn't have the size or sizzle of the one in San Marcos. Had the same crappy movies though.

13. With Andreen at the control of his own chamber, there will be no excuses for the success or failure of his organization. Let the chips fall where they may. Bring it!!

PS- NO city(taxpayer)money for either chamber, let them sink or swim on there own.

14. Encinitas needs a vision:
- Perhaps a couple playhouses co-located with really good resaurants somewhere off of 101.

- A nice multiplex with approprate food options in place of Expo.

- A high end mall

All of the above will generate good tax revenues.

15. Before everyone gets hot to do something special with the old Home Depot Expo, consider that it is grossly underparked as a result of the revision to the Encinitas Ranch Specific Plan that allowed additional development of the REI and Islands Restaurant.

At that time a parking study was accepted that underparked that center based on the Home Depot Expo's actual parking numbers (not the required numbers). It's going to be pretty hard to find a tenant for that space that can abide by the existing parking count.

Maybe it will just take a few folks at the City looking the other way, like the Planning Director and staff, or a politico.

16. Why did Andreen lose his house? He lived there for many years and lost his house and left the chamber within weeks. Coincidence?

ReplyDelete
17. Expo site would need a multi-level parking structure to support a multiplex.

Buy staff lunch or coffee and they will look the other way. It's a great deal for developers. It's not all that difficult.

18. Currently playing at La Paloma is Bruno and The Hangover. Both are entertaining but for adults only. You have to drive to another city to take the kids to a movie. And we get pizza in that city after the movie. More business lost for Encinitas.

ReplyDelete
19. Saw Hangover twice. Pretty unpredictable. (except for the second time.)

ReplyDelete
20. expo should be torn down and community soccer fields should be built. The kids could lunch at Islands or pie wei before or after gAMES. tHE LIGHTS WOULDN'T BOTHER ANYBODY AND THE LOUD SPEAKERS WOULD ONLY BOTHER SHOPPERS AT cARLSBAD store. Good for everyone. The Carlsbad people that need the fields won't have to go so far to use them.

Then we could make the Hall Property a real park.

ReplyDelete
21. Yes.

The city should have forced more soccer fields as part of the initial Encinitas Ranch development.

22. A 24hr bowling alley just might put Encinitas in the black.

23. I don't trust him.

24. I think I will eat some steak, twinkies, and cheesecake to celebrate the New Encinitas COC.

Yeeehaaa. Its a the biggest thing!

25. When is he going to let us in on the biggest thing? At least fred lets us see his Strange Thing.

ReplyDelete
26. I heard from the source's mouth, that Kohl's department Store is going in and as part of the development agreement Encinitas is forcing them to underground the tracks through Encinitas.

Kohl's is going to build a spur tunnel to the parking lot for those shoppers that want to stop at Kohls.

ReplyDelete
27. Membership in the new chamber is FREE!! That's what it's worth!! Nothing!!

ReplyDelete
28. Why, you've always been able to see the Strange Thing. But it will still cost you two bits. Actually, the attraction is down for two weeks while I sweep the shop. Meanwhile, all you cheap lazys that can't come down and see it in person may peek at it for free on Stellabelle's youtube site:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxa_MKtEOqU

She did this video last Halloween that began in Leucadia and ended in beautiful downtown Oceanside. Don't she look like Frida Kahlo?

29. The strange thing, looks like the Quato in total Recall. I love that movie, but hate the 90mph horn screaming polluting trains. Why can we plant a living fense to help hide and clean up the air around the train tracks.

ReplyDelete
30. I'll eat to that.... give me some pork ribs and let me join the new chamber.

Comments on: A major park, 8 years later opinion of 8/1/09

This attempt to vilify concerned citizens and two Encinitas council members is unfair. I agree with," misinformation abounds...",( it is exemplified in this commentary),and that the city bought the land for a Community Park.
The current plan can not be legally called a community park. It is a Sports Park.
The only city funded survey, the Godby survey, shows that 80% want a more passive park. Citizens were invited to design their park. They did and their wishes were ignored. (see map, invitation).
As to the comment, "these two "quality of life" women have been maneuvered into the curious position of opposing a wonderful park", I say Balderdash.
These two council members did not,"... reflexively take the opposite position". They supported the wishes of the community survey, valid concerns of the surrounding neighborhood and
voted to support the recommendations of the planning commission that reviewed many hundreds of pages of the Hall Environmental Impact Report, acknowledged the Godbye Survey, heard two nights of public testimony and read volumes of written comments from citizens of Encinitas who still want a community park for all.

33. A little off topic, Guys... I have a question. Today I trapped on this site:
Rivalspot.com - Play Ps3 tournaments for cash
They say you can play online NHL game tournaments on any console for cash... had anyone tried that before? Looks like a cool idea...
Are there any other sites where you can play sports games for real moneys? I Googled and found only Bringit.com and Worldgaming.com but it looks these guys don't specialize in sport gamez. Any suggestions?
