There was plenty of parking available downtown on Sunday, Feb. 24, 1929, the day Sensor shot the photo. There was a flower show in town that day, and it was during Prohibition, so the alcoholics didn't hog all the parking.
I wondered the same thing. They must have been drinking ginger ale and sarsaparilla because Prohibition was in place until late 1933. Maybe the Saloon was a speakeasy? And little did anybody know what was coming in autumn that year.

Have you noticed how many cars are parked on the east side of coast highway on a weekend night now that Leucadia is having a resurgence? counted 13 eateries between La Costa Ave and Leucadia Blvd alone.
I wonder if all those signs along the tracks warning its not public property and to keep away from the railroad tracks will ever be enforced. If that happens, where will people park?
The commercial parking on the main drag thru Encinitas is used by bicyclists or beach goers. I don't go to Ace Hardware mainly because of the parking problem (and other businesses too).
soooo..... get out of your car and walk or bike to downtown.

ReplyDeleteThen why is the crowd in front of the Saloon?

DeleteRather be hit by a bike than a hummer.....or a fat person.

Haven't you heard? All those people are going to "get out of their cars" and bike or walk to the businesses on 101.
