Wednesday morning sunrise. Much less smoke today. Looks like the little oasis of Encinitas will survive the horrible wildfires that plagued the rest of the county.
Thanks to city council person Teresa Barth for putting me on her e-mail list so I could post all the press release updates the last two days.
Have fun sweeping up ash today everyone. The news said not to use leaf blowers to clean up the ash and try to avoid hosing it into stormdrains.
So I'm not supposed to blow it onto my neighbors property and I can't send it down the drain, what am I supposed to do with it?? Perhaps you can contact Teresa Barth and she will send you a press release and you can post it on this web page!! Then we'll all know what to do it, until then everyone can KISS MY ASH!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think you are supposed to sweep it up and bag it.
ReplyDeleteI hosed it down, just way too much to bag up and I don't own a high quality respirtator.
ReplyDeleteAir quality is still pretty poor overall although it looks so much clearer today, I saw some people jogging this morning, that is crazy.
thanks for the updates for leucadia. Being new to the area it was very hard for me to listen to all the roads and names of areas being evacuated. Your short to the point messages were great. Again thankyou. My prayers are with all the people who have been involved in the evacuations. Again thankyou for taking the time to organise this information and pictures.
ReplyDeleteI hosed down my front porch to get the ash off. I was careful to see that all the ash and water ran into the planted areas. Nothing went into the storm drains. The ash actually contains some nutrients that can benefit the soil.
ReplyDeleteThe advice is somewhat skewed. It's best to try to keep it out of the air and put it into the soil. Washing it into storm drains is not as bad as it sounds. Already tons of ash have been blown into the ocean. Yesterday I could see large areas of ash floating on the surface of the ocean. What do you think is going to happen with the first rains?
Yeah, check out the photo of the ash in the ocean on a previous post. But that is what the info babe on teevee said.
ReplyDeleteI know we are supposed to conserve water and all but I'm thinking hosing down your driveways and patios is the only thing that is going to freshen up your property.
Maybe we should wait a few days before we start using excess water and electricity.. We were fortunate enough not to have to evacuate we should conserve electric and water for people that need it that are not as fortunate as we are. People are going to be living in shelters for who knows how long without showers or peace of mind. I think I can live with a little ash on the ground for a few days.
ReplyDeleteIt is a challenge to conscientious during a crisis.
ReplyDeleteI thought about throwing a bucket or two greywater (dishwater? - invite a bucket into your shower?) thrown onto the drive would give me a good start to sweep up ash. I agree that it is premature to start using water or electricity with gusto. Besides our being in drought environment, the fires are still burning.
The toxins used in building materials are an integral part of this ash. I have a real sense of caution with breathing, ingesting or putting into planting beds or water systems. Note: caution, not hysteria.
Well put kate that has been the whole mindset so far so lets continue.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that Teresa is taking the time to give us updates. I haven't gotten them from any other Councilperson. I also think it is a testimony to our own citizens, as we are pulling together to help others in need. I just finished a shift at Qualcom, and it is almost unbelieveable how many people cannot get back into their homes, or know if they even have homes to get into. We are very fortunate to live in this community, even with all of the "strange" goings-on! Hang in there and don't forget to "pay it forward" if you feel so inclined.
ReplyDeleteyou assume I have a storm drain. I wonder how our mayor who was told to evacuate but didn't is going to increase some fee because we put ash in the mythical storm drain. Give me a break.
