The public is finally waking up to the misery that Dan Dalager, Jerome Stocks, and Maggie has imposed on our City for the next decade by adopting their 40% increase in pensions in 2005. All your current tax money is needed for their current pensions obligations. Any money for projects or landscape maintenance will need to come from higher taxes and fees from the City's residents and businesses.

2. Do not allow council to select a new City Manager until after November 2011.

I attended the informational meeting on Pension reform sponsored by the Encinitas and San Diego Tax Payers Associations. Most Encinitas city employees will receive about 2.7% of their salary for every year worked based on their highest paid single year. As such Phil Cotton will receive about 32% of his salary as his pension. At 200 K his pension would be about 65 K a year. I think his salary is around 224K. Kathleen
Last night, Channel 13 in Sacramento broadcast an in-depth report by reporter Mike Luery on the 50% growth of the CalPERS $100,000 Pension Club in just one year. CFFR president Marcia Fritz makes a cameo appearance.
Interestingly, the report starts with Sacramento Fire Captain Christian Pebbles repeating that old tired mantra about firefighters deserving better pensions because they die young. Also note the amazing comment near the end by Willie Brown (former mayor of San Francisco and former speaker of the California Assembly) that pensions won’t bankrupt the state — the state will just cease paying them.

Everyone at City Hall wanted the increases. The blame has to be put on the City Manager (Kerry Miller) and the City Council (Stocks, Bond, Dalager, Houlihan, and Guerin). The council had to approve it.

I don't think the Council would actually have the nerve to appoint another insider. It would not set well with the citizens that actually care about the City. At this time, there are a lot of people looking for work. There are also a lot of City Managers of other cities who would love to work in Encinitas. I just e-mailed a friend of mine who is a City Manager for an Orange County city. She lives down this way and would be great. As soon as they open up the job search, I am hoping she will apply. She told me there are a lot of City Managers who would love to work in Encinitas. So, repeating what they did with Phil does not seem too likely, especially if they wait until after the election. There is a reason Phil retired. We may never know the truth of the situation, but I believe there is more than meets the eye. I suggest we keep the pressure on, and also attempt to get Glen Sabine's contract to be put out to bid. He has been here too long, IMHO. As I said before, I think Phil is a nice person. I just think he was not objective enough in some of his decisions.
Whoever the is temp will be tasked with continuing to cover up and clean up before a permanent is placed. A lot of shredding will take place and others will leave before an outsider could ever be placed. Additionally, if the good old boys stay in office or in control, it won't be an outsider. I'll bet on that one.
One other thing, I heard the Fire Chief is up for a raise. Anyone know anything
Hazelton. Isn't he the one that obviously worked with the GOB's to challenge the Planning Commission who recommended a reduction of fields and address dangerous traffic problems at Hall Sports fields? The Planning Commission made these recomendations because they recognized that this is what the public wanted. And he put in the phrase, "maximize sports fields" into the Hall goal statement, even though there was no public discussion on this radical change and went against the vast majority of recorded public input. He did not work for the public at large, but for the 'Boys'. He is not a good choice if we want someone that works for the general public.
I think Steve has the most likely scenario. Some months back I heard from insiders at city hall that Chris Hazeltine has been saying that he wants to be city manager. He certainly is ambitious. His intelligence may be up to debate, but ambition and intelligence don't necessarily go together. I wouldn't call him a slacker either, as he has been working very hard to promote himself.
It's unlikely to be Patrick Murphy. He is a religious man, and I don't think he would take the position. That leaves Larry Watt of Public Works. This is a possibility, but he seems to be less of a toady. The council majority wants a lapdog. That was Phil Cotton. Woof! Woof!. That will be Chris Hazeltine. Arf! Arf!.
Hazeltine has a very poor performance record, let's do an evaluation of Chris Hazeltine's performance and air his incompetence and lack of management and leadership skills. This will be a fun undertaking and further expose him. The list is long of his screw ups. Give me a day or so and I'll get it started.

Hey, you have no idea what your talking about. First off, I'm at my retirement max 30 years of service @70% of my base salary, thats what I earned. I paid my entire pension contribution for 30 years unlike how it's structured down here where the city makes the entire contribution. I'm gonna do 10 more years because I have a young family and can't afford to retire. My years of enjoying retirement will be limited and it's likely I will not live as many years on retirement as I worked. My family will then only get half of my retirement when I'm dead. My fireman's pension in LA is NOT anything like the cushy one the pretty boys down here have.
The big news down here is that the poor Carlsbad fireman are going to have a contract imposed that includes a 2 tier pension. Additionally their going to have to pay their pension contribution so the city won't be picking that up anymore. Well that's old news. In LA we have a 5 tier system and it's going to change again, and not for the better. I don't want to hear your bull shit about my pension you don't know anything about it. So shut the F*#K up and lets focus on keeping Hazeltine from taking over at City Manager.

I suggest we keep the pressure on, and also attempt to get Glen Sabine's contract to be put out to bid. He has been here too long, IMHO. As I said before, I think Phil is a nice person. I just think he was not objective enough in some of his decisions.
ReplyDeleteWhoever the is temp will be tasked with continuing to cover up and clean up before a permanent is placed. A lot of shredding will take place and others will leave before an outsider could ever be placed. Additionally, if the good old boys stay in office or in control, it won't be an outsider. I'll bet on that one.

Hazelton. Isn't he the one that obviously worked with the GOB's to challenge the Planning Commission who recommended a reduction of fields and address dangerous traffic problems at Hall Sports fields? The Planning Commission made these recomendations because they recognized that this is what the public wanted. And he put in the phrase, "maximize sports fields" into the Hall goal statement, even though there was no public discussion on this radical change and went against the vast majority of recorded public input.

I think Steve has the most likely scenario. Some months back I heard from insiders at city hall that Chris Hazeltine has been saying that he wants to be city manager. He certainly is ambitious. His intelligence may be up to debate, but ambition and intelligence don't necessarily go together. I wouldn't call him a slacker either, as he has been working very hard to promote himself.
ReplyDeleteIt's unlikely to be Patrick Murphy. He is a religious man, and I don't think he would take the position. That leaves Larry Watt of Public Works. This is a possibility, but he seems to be less of a toady. The council majority wants a lapdog. That was Phil Cotton. Woof! Woof!. That will be Chris Hazeltine. Arf! Arf!.

Hey, you have no idea what your talking about. First off, I'm at my retirement max 30 years of service @70% of my base salary, thats what I earned. I paid my entire pension contribution for 30 years unlike how it's structured down here where the city makes the entire contribution. I'm gonna do 10 more years because I have a young family and can't afford to retire. My years of enjoying retirement will be limited and it's likely I will not live as many years on retirement as I worked. My family will then only get half of my retirement when I'm dead. My fireman's pension in LA is NOT anything like the cushy one the pretty boys down here have.
ReplyDeleteThe big news down here is that the poor Carlsbad fireman are going to have a contract imposed that includes a 2 tier pension. Additionally their going to have to pay their pension contribution so the city won't be picking that up anymore. Well that's old news. In LA we have a 5 tier system and it's going to change again, and not for the better. I don't want to hear your bull shit about my pension you don't know anything about it. So shut the F*#K up and lets focus on keeping Hazeltine from taking over at City Manager.

We hear all their stories and know its a cake job. You know its much easier to get paid for a 24 hour shift, or you would do something else. So you shut the F9087ck up Tax leach.

Lets get all the pensions replaced with 401k programs and no more than private sector.
If not 401ks, I say lets make it 1% at 65. so pensions are more like 45% of the highest paid year if they work like 45 years like the rest of us. Public worker compensation should be equal or less than private not vise versa.
