Subject: Surfing Madonna
Gentlemen:
Confirming our conversation today, I am privileged to represent the artist who created the so-called "Surfing Madonna." His name is Mark Patterson, also a long-time citizen of Encinitas.
Fox News San Diego. It was on the 6 p.m. news tonight and wil be on again tonight at 1 0 p.m. The entire interview
wil be posted shortly on the station's website. As we discussed, Mark never expected or intended the response that his work has gotten: Before you judge or questionthe artist's motives, please watch the entire interview.

As you will see, Mark said, "This is my gift to the community. It came from inspiration. It has an As I told you in advance, Mark gave a television interview today to Loren Nancarrow of important message of 'Save the Ocean'."
Today, with Mark's permission, I spoke with the City's consultant Andrea Morse of Sculpture Conservation Studio, Inc., in order to provide her with the technical details necessar to safely remove the ar without destroying it, if that is what ultimately must be.done. The removal, done properly, would leave only 18 small screw holes in the wall, all easily filled and causing no substantial or permanent damage.
During that discussion, Ms. Morse said that it was her conclusion that the piece is a beautiful piece of art, that the installation was "well thought out" and excellently mounted in a protected area. We hope you agree. She said it wil be her recommendation to the City that the mosaic be covered until it could be officially made "public ar." We think that is worthy and acheivable goal for us to work towards 6/9/2011 together. If it remains the City's decision to remove the art from its present location, be assured that Mark and I wil cooperate fully in the City's effort to remove the art work and re-locate it to a suitable new location.
Sincerely yours, Anton C. Gerschler, Esq.

From the NCTimes:
Three people with the Los Angeles-based Sculpture Conservation Studio discovered the words "Ark" and "Patterson" written in marker on the very upper edge of the piece during an investigation Tuesday morning. At first they said someone named Mark Patterson could be the artist, but they took another look and had second thoughts, saying the letters could have been written after the piece went up.Mark says he has friends inside city hall. It is good to have friends inside city hall under the current form of government.
"Deputy Mayor Jerome Stocks said there is no question it must go since making an exception to the law would set a dangerous precedent."

Isn't Jerome the master of city hall special favors?
"Mark never expected or intended the response that his work has gotten"
ReplyDeleteReally, how is that possible?
Just like the Kook's creator, bet he didn't expect the response he got. Artists are a different breed.
ReplyDeleteMark is a great guy with a big heart and probably the best intentions.
ReplyDeleteI really want the City to be cool about this, and find a way to make this a win for all of us.
This art will be around for a long time and should be treated as the wonderful gift that it is.
For anyone interested-There will be a vigil this Sunday eve. under and around the bride for the Surfing Madonna. It starts at 6PM. There is a FB page for her now for more details. It is from 6-8:30PM so bring candles if you like. Please make it legal and no fighting. If you don't like her, please respect those of us who do and don't come on out.
ReplyDeleteAlso for those of you that are still interested in the Fire Dept situation, I beg you to please wait to trash me after we attempt to save this amazing piece of art. If it cannot be where it is, then help us move it safely to somewhere else and not put the artist in a bad legal situation. That would be very appreciated, by many people who love this art. Thank you so much. More questions, email me at: lgreene98@aol.com only on the art, not on the FD. I have said my last words on that until another time. Thank you again.
Dr. Lorri,
ReplyDeleteWhat do you call it when the city won't release information on disciplinary issues? How can you say there was no attempt to keep that covered up when the city refused to release the information until Mieche hired an attorney?
Why won't you answer this question?
Why do you want to stifle free speech of those who disagree with you?
Starman: I am so disappointed in you. I was really hoping this could be about the surfing madonna, but you could not let it go. What does that say about you. I wanted t give you credit that you would for once, let it be until after the Madonna issue is settled. But I guess you are too obsessed with the FD issue. I truly wish I knew who you were and I would share more with you. of course, now I would not trust you not to tell the truth as I know it. How sad.

ReplyDeleteWhy attack instead of answering the question?
