Beware the Children
KFMB/News 8 recently reported that out of all the San Diego county cities, Encinitas had the largest increase in juvenile arrest rates in 2005; 46 percent!
KFMB website click me
In San Diego, the number of juveniles arrested on weapons charges has increased 14 percent over the past five years, according to the latest SANDAG crime report.
And while juveniles represent just 13 percent of the county's overall population, criminal kids account for 35 percent of all weapons arrests, 28 percent of robbery arrests and 26 percent of burglary arrests.
Of course, the story doesn't say how many arrest were made in Encinitas, just that arrest were up 46%
Is that an increase from say, 3 arrest or 25 or 100 or what?
Are our local punk kids hiding shanks, stealing old ladies purses or smashing your car window and stealing your i-pod? What kind of crimes are these evil little bastards committing in our quaint little village by the sea?
The television news is very good into striking fear into your heart by being stingy with real information.
Maybe the North Count Times or the Coast News will do a story with less hype and more information.

The news does distort numbers but i am glad to see something said about the punks. During this summer in Encinitas it is out of control. The kids were looking for trouble. There was a group that beat a guy up so bad he was in the ICU with major damage to his face. All of the teens had pipes with taped handles on them. These kids were up to no good. They were just waiting for someone to beat. I do not know about you but that is not the down town I want!
ReplyDeleteMaybe this report will help this summer to be safer from the teens!
The KFMB story does not mention assaults. Sounds like that guy was beat down by 18 year olds and up.
ReplyDeleteIf there were 5 juvenile arrest in 2005 and 9 juvenile arrest in 2006 then that is a 46 percent increase but hardly qualifies as a crime wave.
ReplyDeleteChannel 8 news has a long history of fear mongering. According to them we should all be dead from killer bee attacks by now.
The "weapons" in the photo are pocket knives and novelty knives. When you are 13 years old your uncle gives you a pocket knife for your birthday and you take it with you everywhere. I doubt there were any stabbings in Encinitas by juveniles with Swiss Army knives.
ReplyDeleteI'am curious to know where the assualt that "cadmus" reported happened, and was it racially motivated?
ReplyDeleteyou want crime stats? Go to http://www.arjis.org/. They have all you want for san diego county.
ReplyDeleteYes, and the report doesn't seem to factor in an increase in population.
ReplyDeleteI agree; it would be more responsible for KFMB to give us the actual number of arrests in Encinitas rather than the "percent of increase."
Also, read the following paragraph from the report. One can see this "report" is addressing juvenile arrest rates, NOT juvenile arrest rates on weapons charges. The numbers, in fact, could include arrests for graffit, for example, which Encinitas has been actively discouraging, a good thing!
"The communities with the largest increase in juvenile arrest rates in 2005 were Encinitas with a 46 percent increase in juvenile arrests. Poway had a 41 percent increase. Coronado, Santee and Escondido round out the top five."
Sensationalism,
ReplyDeleteI think you might be a blogger by another name in a previous life. If you are, thanks for being concise and on topic!
We appreciated it.
I'll tell ya what those little buggers need to be arrested for. Arrest them for clogging up the inside on their little potato chip boards. I'm tired of my Stewart getting all dinged up running over them.
ReplyDeleteHey, with the City of Encinitas paying for more police, there will be more citations. Many times, as I've seen this, it's easier to give someone on a bicycle or a skateboard a citation than someone in a car for these cops.
ReplyDeleteThe increase could be just from skateboard tickets if those count. Yeah, KFMB is real unclear on what the heck they are talking about.
Because there are more arrests or tickets doesn't mean there's more crime, just a higher police profile, more stringent enforcement.
You ride a Stewart? Have some self respect and get a real board.
ReplyDeletethe attack was at raul's taco shop and the kids went to San Dieguito high.
ReplyDeleteThere were other attacks all in the 101 and Dst area.
