Let's Tour North Leucadia (part 6)

The transition point from the Leucadia Creek apartments to the next block is a little dicey. No sidewalk or marked bike lane. I had to time my crossing past this parked vehicle as to not getting run over by a trio of matching pink clad 10-speeders.

What we have next is classic Americana Leucadia. This cool and quaint antique store comes complete with a white picket fence.

Status: classic funky

The sign is faded and could use a touch up but it has a night light, although I don't quite recall if the light is ever switched on after dark. "1,000 square feet of treasures".

Looking back north from the antique store.

Next is this cool old apartment building. This place has had a great facelift recently. It used to be kind of a rat trap. Now it's nice and clean and quaint. I'm glad this building was improved instead of being torn down. It has a really cool courtyard in the back.

Status: funky cool

Another awkward transition area to walk through but here the sidewalk starts up again and we encounter our new gas station, still in progress.

The new gas station has a art deco revival theme which I'll take over the stucco/spanish tile look anyday. It will be interesting to see how the building looks when finished.

If selling overpriced candy bars and Red Bulls for min. wage sounds appealing to you then check out the new Mobile station on Leucadia101, they are hiring.
Seriously though, I know big oil and cars are evil and every time you fill up your tank you support the Bin Laden family and all the Bush/Cheney corpo freaks...but, it will be nice to have a gas station on the coast highway. And, it will provide the only ATM location in north Leucadia.

  1. It will only take a little TLC to shine up the character of that area. Do that and make it safe to walk and we have something special.

  2. Thank you Fred Caldwell for getting involved in the design of the gas station. Freds effort was huge and was the main reason we don't have an ordinary piece of crap station.

It is the best, coolest gas station in North County. The rest of the as former commish Les Bagg said "look like a shoebox dipped in stucco"

Leucadia is (insert favorite word here) and so is our new gas station.

Someone reccomend a facade grant for the faded sign!

  5. Les Baggs was a big bag of wind on the planning commission. Hell, it seems as though he was sleeping through most meetings.

He was rude, crude and generally unpleasant to the public. IF HE WAS OPPOSED TO SOMETHING YOU CAN BET IT WAS A GOOD THING FOR THE COMMUNITY.

  6. The retro gas station is a good fix on 101, but why did the city engineers and the fire department allow the building to be placed six inches from the adjacent building on the neighbor property? The building is so close, it couldn't be painted on that side.

  7. Zero lot lines are a common building type. You see it a lot in downtown San Diego for example. It is a bit strange to see it on coastal Leucadia. Code requires the wall to be 1-2 hour fire rated. I assume that is the case with the new Mobile station.
