Orange Sandbags? Gee, thanks.

Sandbags were placed around the Leucadia Blvd intersection recently to help control erosion. I don't know if it was the city of Encinitas of NCTD that placed the sandbags there. I'm not against the sandbags, but do they really need to be orange?

I've never even seen orange sandbags before, have you? What the hell man?

I swear it's a conspiracy sometimes. I mean, orange sandbags? Talk about your proverbial sore thumbs.

Yes, the sandbags are orange. You noticed too? Good thing the sandbags are orange or else I would have swerved and run over them.

Let's see, orange sandbags? Check. Dirt and weeds? Check. Okay people, nothing to see here, move along.

When people complain that Leucadia is ugly what they really mean is that the NCTD rail corridor is not managed well. The NCTD is like it's own government and they don't seem to care if their railway uglies up your downtown. The dirt, weeds, dust and grim and puddles all belong to the NCTD. Downtown Encinitas has a bit of a chip on it's shoulder over Leucadia, but it's pure luck that the tracks curve in just enough so that Encinitas is able to have a two sided mainstreet downtown. Imagine if the tracks ran all the way down the coast highway like in Leucadia.

Encinitas city councilman Jerome Stocks is on the NCTD board (Planning Commitee Chairperson and Member of Governance Committee) Maybe if we ask nicely our good pal Jerome will have the orange sandbags replaced with normal sandbags so we don't look like a bunch of hicks.

*note--the city went through the center medians in north Leucadia last week and pulled all the weeds that grew from the recent rains. That was nice, but it's kind of one step forward and two steps back when you have orange freakin' sandbags.

  4. Orange is vibrant. It's a combination of red and yellow so it shares some common attributes with those colors. It denotes energy, warmth, and the sun. But orange has a bit less intensity or aggression than red, calmed by the cheerfulness of yellow. As a warm color orange is a stimulant — stimulating the emotions and even the appetite. Orange can be found in nature in the changing leaves of fall, the setting sun, and the skin and meat of citrus fruit. Orange brings up images of autumn leaves, pumpkins, and (in combination with Black) Halloween. It represents the changing seasons so in that sense it is a color on the edge, the color of change between the heat of summer and the cool of winter. Because orange is also a citrus color, it can conjure up thoughts of vitamin C

    On the other hand:
Gray is a neutral, balanced color. It is a cool, conservative color that seldom evokes strong emotion although it can be seen as a cloudy or moody color. The lighter side of black, gray is a cool color seen in storm clouds and some metals. Like black, gray is used as a color of mourning as well as a color of formality. Along with blue suits, gray suits are part of the uniform of the corporate developer world. Dark, charcoal gray carries with it some of the strengh and mystery of black. It is a sophisticated color without much of the negative attributes of black. Lighter grays are similar to white. Gray tuxedos are common for men at weddings.

So which is Leucadia, Funky orange or developer gray?

  6. Not that I'm the final word on what is funky and what isn't but...orange sandbags NOT FUNKY.

  7. Orange Sanbags are ugly and highlight the existing erosion problem which was not helped by the ugly orange sanbags. If NCTD is going to install them, they should use a brown, tan, or grey to match the surrounding ugly NCTD right-of-way.

  8. Doesn't SANDAG now control the NCTD?

  9. So a group of people who mostly don't live here runs the NCTD?

  10. It runs through more than our city. Jeromne stocks is the president of the group. It is obvious that he deoesn't care about his city.

  11. Jerome is Planning Commitee Chairperson and Member of Governance Committee:

    Escondido Councilmember is current chair.

Jerome positions himself to look good for all of North county so he can get elected to the State Assembly in the future. Jerome is looking out "all of North County" and Developers best interest who are the folks that will get him elected to a higher office. He is not looking out for what's best for Encinitas.

  12. I guess the orange sandbags were picked because they are visible, like a curb, almost.

They draw attention to other concerns, like the failed drainage and erosion problem "fixes," on the City's part, made worse, now, by recent re-grading of the railroad.

"burlap," funny post. Someone had a choice, I'd say, what kind of sandbags to use. Seems like there could have been some burlap, some orange, if necessary.

  13. These sandbags are as ugly as the Leucadiasingles.com signs that have sprung up in the mediuns.

  14. Did the installation of these sandbags go through the City's Citizen Participation Program? Why weren't we notified of this. I think we should march down to City Hall and demand that the sandbags be replaced with a more appropriate color (to be determined by a sandbag color committee made up of members of the Leucadia Merchants Association and Leucadia Task Force). If that is not acceptable, then I would suggest we consider creating a sandbag art sponsored program where local artist paint murals or funky designs on the sandbags. Of course, this is only if this is not considered public art and can be removed withour the artist's consent when the permanent flooding problem is fixed with a long term solution.

  15. Jerome Stocks is "punishing" Leucadia for opposing his redevelopment scheme along 101.

    Hence Caroline Thompson.

  16. THE ORANGE SANDBAGS ARE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY. DID YOU KNOW THAT .005% OF ALL ACCIDENTS ARE SANDBAG RELATED?

  17. Wait. All encinitians drive through 'funky' Leucadia so we all should be represented on the new "sand bag" color committee. I propose public hearings with appeal rights to the city council.

Maybe we could sell a bond to pay for the upgraded 'SandMcMansions'. Or, perhaps use the 10,000 dollars spent on surveys to see if we are feeling good tp replace orange.

Maybe, in the dead of night we could get RSPB to paint these bags a sand color. We would have to suffer a few yellow spots where he relives himself during the painting process. If we leave a six pack of brew and paint maybe it will be like bait, so JP can stake-out the place and get a digital of who RSPB really is.

See these sandbags aren't all that bad. There is a lot of potential here.
