I love the fact that I don't have to wait at a red light when it’s safe to go. Much more efficient and much safer. My intelligence is far superior to some elementary computer turning lights green, yellow and red when deciding on when it is safe to cross an intersection.
We have very good traffic engineers at the City for promoting these better improvements and listening to the community. Thanks for the great work.
From listening to conversations around town, I would guess that 90% of the people love them, and 10% dont like them. I think that is great because you always have people who fear change.

I think the City should have a policy to fast track any roundabout projects. We now know they work and the traffic engineers were right. The roundabouts on Leucadia were first proposed by the traffic engineers in 2001 and it took a lot of time because there were some people who doubted them. Well they work and work well. Lets minimize all the meetings so we don't have to wait another 7 years of public input to get them on the ground and working. I'd like to see them next at Hygeia and then along 101.
I love them BUT would love to see Palm Trees at Hermes Ave instead of a TWIG. I think the fences at Hermes ave should have been replaced on the North Side - kind of half ass looking.
Also - NOBODY Freakin' yields!!! They need to put a speed hump for for yielders on all four sides.
But - they are beautiful and do work. IT'S JUST AMAZING HOW MANY STUPID ASSES OUT THERE DON'T KNOW HOW TO FREAKIN' READ A YIELD SIGN! I honk at someone at least 3 times a week!!
Palm Trees?? Hmmm, when I was building my project in 1990, I was told, "Palm trees do not reflect a beach community". Gee, I wish this city would make up it's mind, do they or do they not reflect a beach community??
Is there truth to the rumor that the city is installing yield sign violation cameras at all roundabouts? The reason for the roundabouts is not traffic flow but revenue generation.
Don't believe the hype. The roundabouts are dangerous if you are a pedestrian. Trophy wife in SUV on cell phone no slow down!!! I almost died trying to cross the roundabout to get to 7-11. I prayed to god not to let me be a news story on the blog--ahhhhhhhhh.
Hey dick my eyes are open but the morning commute drivers don't look for pedestrians. I think they are looking at the dead tree in the center instead and not to the side. The only time it's safe to cross is when the traffic backs up to a dead stop from the light.
Walkers, We must stay civil with each other because it's enough having the cars use us as targets. This is a perfect town for pedestrians and bikers. Let's make it friendly for all so folks will get out of their cars and enjoy Leucadia and Leucadians.
To anonymous comment on replacing north side of fences on Hermes, it is up to the property owner to replace not an expense to the City. South side of Hermes was funded by property owner.
If you think stop signs work so well then I suggest you go out to Hygeia and cross Leucadia a bunch of times and then see how many times the drivers almost hit you. At the stop sign you can have a smart pedestrian and stupid driver and still get run over whereas at the roundabout the smart pedestrian has no worries because they are only crossing about 15 feet at a time. Look left, if clear cross 15 feet (about 4 seconds). Stop on median look right, if clear cross 15 feet.
At a traffic signal you can be killed on a walk signal because cars make right turns on green lights. I know the driver would be at fault but the pedestrian would be dead. Speeds through traffic signals are very high but roundabouts are only about 15 mph. And they move traffic.
This is slightly off topic, but don't foget the ArtWars event starts tomorrow, Sat., May 24th, 2pm, at the Leucadia 7-11. You can meet the kids, watch them paint a cool abstract mural, and meet their mentor, Jeremy Wright, who has my vote for the first artist the city should hire to create a piece for one of the roundabouts on Leucadia Blvd.
Do yourself a favor and go back and read some roundabout blogs or google roundabouts and learn why roundabout are superior to signals and stop signs.

Signals suck and have the highest fatality rate of all intersection control. Plus it’s wasteful to sit at a red light when it is clear to go. Only herd mentality and people who cannot think for themselves like signals. Haven't you ever waited at a signal for minutes while your limited life tick by and the coast is clear. They are the worst.
From the perspective of freedom loving people the order of preference for intersection control is
1. Roundabouts
2. Stop Sign
3 Traffic Signal.

ReplyDeleteI think the canopy trees will look beautiful in a few years at Hermes Avenue. There is no ocean view, so we enjoy are tree views more.

In Five years there will be a flowering Colorful canopy tree haven that is the talk of the town.
