How walkable is Leucadia? A couple of Sundays ago I took the family on a walk to the farmers market at Paul Ecke Central elementary school and decided to photograph our adventure.
Our starting point, the Leucadia Roadside Park north crosswalk, heading east across the historic coast highway 101, then across the train tracks to Vulcan Ave.
Crossing over. Note the horrible condition of this heavily used intersection. See, Leucadia Blog: The Lonely Pedestrian
The refurbished path across the tracks. See: Leucadia Blog: Slightly Less Dangerous Pedestrian Path added to Leucadia Blvd
Across the tracks!
Push zee button. Who or what is TLK? I see this tag everywhere around town.
Waiting to cross south on Vulcan Ave and Leucadia Blvd.
The Vulcan Ave/Leucadia Blvd intersection received this nice new pavement. Too bad the Hwy101 portion is in such poor shape, I wonder if that repaving and repainting of the lanes that was promised last summer will happen this year?
*Note the new sidewalks and landscaping heading east up Leucadia Blvd. There has been a drastic increase in pedestrians here from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Halfway across the red hand started flashing, hurry!
Follow the sign.
Looking back, you can see the orange sandbags which are now thankfully gone. The rumor is that stack of railroad ties are going in place of the sandbags. The coast highway corridor of Leucadia looks nice from this view but the immediate area is awful. This intersection not only has a total lack of landscaping, but there is barely even any plant life. Just a few small scraggly weeds trying to survive here and there. Very bleak, dusty and sad. This area is controlled by the North County Transit District or NCTD. The mayor of Encinitas, Jerome Stocks sits on the board of directors for the NCTD.
Let's head down this path towards the farmers market...(to be continued).

ReplyDeleteDear JP,
Thanks for the input on the signal operation at Leucadia/101/Vulcan. I just made a signal timing change that I think will help address the problem in the westbound direction on Leucadia for the time being. The problem is exacerbated on busy Saturday weekends when everyone is leaving Beacons at 101. I am programming our central traffic control computer to document the green time for each signal movement on Saturday and will use this data to develop a special timing plan for those busy times.
I will also request that Public Works schedule repainting of the white dashed lane line in the middle of the intersection for the westbound dual left turns. This should help better designate the left turn movements.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Sincerely,
Rob Blough
Traffic Engineer

This death trap of an intersection has been an issue for Leucadia since incorporation. Yet no improvements. Always promises and no improvements. Oh yeah, in 20 years they repaved 50 feet of a jacked up goat path.
ReplyDeleteLeucadia has screamed at the City that they want Leucadia “Walkable”. I sure hope they accelerate the construction of more pedestrian improvements.
I heard the City has a project to improve the road over the tracks between Vulcan Avenue and Hwy101. If that is true, I sure hope they have at least WIDE walkways and bikepaths on eachside of the road. The crappy narrow newly paved goat path on the north side just doesn't cut it for a walkable community. I can't wait to go to the community input workshop on the project like we have for all community projects. Does anyone know the schedule for that meeting?
I heard Cardiff is getting a quietzone this year, Will Leucadia be getting a quiet zone this year? When is Leucadia's quiet zone scheduled? I haven’t heard anything on the subject.
Lastly, what about that fricken dusty hell called NCTD property. Why does the rest of Encinitas have trees and plants along the NCTD right-of-way and Leucadia get dustscape?
Can anyone help answer these questions?
Jeromes been our NCTD representative for the last 8 years. How has he done on addressing the NCTD issues?
NCTD is OK with planting non-sight interfering plants at the intersection. The city or we have to do it.
ReplyDeleteJP- Careful, Child Protective Services could investigate you and the missus for child endangerment. Even I don't stagger across 101 nor near or down Vulcan. Just too dangerous.
ReplyDeleteAs for this "goat path", no self respecting goat herder would endanger his lively hood by making his investment cross this stretch of highway or road.
Another death trap is Leucadia Blvd leading to Beacons from LRSP. Drivers whip up and down that street at lightening speed and you ARE taking your life in your hands. This is a Santa Fe underpass waiting to happen. Thank you to the city for ignoring this problem, it will go away if we just ignore it long enough!!! And I won't mention the access trail to Beacons beach Another disaster in the making.
Yep, this city council is just like all the others, DO NOTHING AND SPEND A LOT OF $$$$$ DOING NOTHING!
What will be James Bonds city pension for 16 years of NOTHING!!! How much will he take home every month for once a week council meeting, once a month water meetings, once a month Sandag meetings. $2grand?? $4grand?? What ever the amount, it's too much. Too many "studies", "Consultants" and "Lawsuits" will have been paid to justify any pension. Just too much waste!!!
Staggering no where near the dangerous streets and intersections of Leucadia, it's your RSPB!!
The NTC posted a double-track article last night. The link below will likely get cutoff, but the article is on the home page:
