Walking to the Farmers Market (part 2)

Leucadia Blog: Walking to the Farmers Market (part 1)

click photos for large view

So now we are cruising south down the Vulcan Ave goat path towards Paul Ecke Central elementary school and the farmers market. The path is narrow and listing to the right in many places so it's actually not easy to push the stroller.

The little dude checking it all out.

This chair is random. Notice the scorched earth of the NCTD rail zone. Everytime a train comes roaring through here at 80 mph it kicks up giant clouds of dirt that covers the downtown Leucadia in a layer of filth.

Biking to Sunday brunch.

Lovely bus stop.

There is a discarded empty carton of Malboro reds every 20 feet on Vulcan Ave. Most likely from the same person. This is a fresh one.

  2. Get ready for 100 times a day of dust bowls and horn blasts.

One of the settlement's key points calls for the association to generate, within a year, a status report on efforts to complete a second track along the coast and seek funding to build unfinished segments.

According to the association, about 60 percent of the coastal railroad has two sets of tracks now.

"It's a scandal that you don't have double tracking," McFetridge said.

At the same time, Gonzalez said, "We recognize that the stretch along Del Mar is going to be problematic."

Association officials have said completing a parallel track through North County will require trestles over lagoons and a tunnel under Del Mar. A tunnel is fiercely opposed by many in the tiny, wealthy seaside community who fear it would ruin neighborhoods and the coastal environment.

But McFetridge said two sets of tracks would be beneficial for the environment in the long haul.

He said North County Transit District could run many more Coaster trains during the rush hour and every one would be packed with commuters, taking cars off the road and slashing emissions of greenhouse gases.

Save Our Forest and Ranchlands followed through on a threat to sue over the 2003 regional transportation plan. It later reached a settlement after the association agreed to study whether shifting money from Highways 76 and 67 to beef up central San Diego bus routes would make the region's traffic flow better. The study found that North County commutes would have deteriorated.

This is definitely a supply side economic issue. The whole world has to get together on this. Who is a fool and thinks countries like China and Russia are going to drastically cut back on production and consumption of coal, gas, and oil? World population reduction through reduced birth rates is the only way to go. Maybe California should be a leader and develop policies that motivate and reward a lower birthrate.

Now the rush hour trains are nearing full capacity, and demand is still growing. The Coaster and the trolley have proven that we CAN get southern Californians out of their cars if we provide attractive alternatives to fighting freeway congestion.

Double-tracking through Del Mar is years and millions of dollars away, but at least the rest of the system could be doubled.

    This is nuts

They think nothing of wasting taxpayer money for their own little petty causes. This is our money going to them. Think SANDAG would cave so easy if it was each members personal dollars going to these groups? Take it to court, get a jury of taxpayers and see what happens.

  5. The ugly asphault curbing is thanks to crabby pants Guerin, in response to the school district cutting back on bus service to PE central school. The children have to walk and placing a curb between them and a car makes it so much safer.

Of course a sidewalk could have been built on the east side of Vulcan, but NOOOOOO that would have made too much sense. And why would Geurin and her cohorts in keeping Leucadia ugly want that for us goat path walkers?? Oh, BTW, her cohorts on the council were Bond, Houlihan, Stocks and Gomer.

Staying off the Vulcan goat path at all times it's your RSPB!!

  6. Anon 1:30- Are you crazy? JP and Fam never made it to the farmers market. He was smart and aborted his mission in the interest of saving his family’s lives.

Would you risk your entire families’ lives on that goat path with 40mph cars ripping by 2 feet from your arm?

  7. The bright side of the ugly path is there is a path. prior to the path there was nothing but dirt and weeds this I know from volunteering to lead the children on walk to school day. I spoke at the meeting at Central school the night the school buses were canceled asking for a safe place to walk for the kids and at least something was provided in a timely fashion not pretty but better than what was there. My suggestion to those that only gripe on this blog is go to city hall or the council meeting and air your Good Ideas. Also vote out Jerome and vote for Rachelle and Joe or Bob. Than maybe we will get the changes we want and need.
