El Camino Streetscape

  2. I guess this is open mike on what we think of El Camino Real Steetscape. A few comments.

    That road is solely for vehicles only.

    While surrounded by neighborhoods including the huge Village Park area, you never see pedestrians or bikes.

    I don't blame anybody for not walking that stretch, it’s a internal highway for Carlsbad.

    Wide road, minimal sidewalks and bike lanes, and generic landscaping.

    Do we want that along our Coast?

    Hell no. We can do much better. Tree Canopy anyone?

  4. The traffic on 101 doesn't even come close to El Camino Real or Encinitas Blvd. Luckily. 101 is busy just a few work days a week for an hour or less and on weekends. Is that justification for roundabouts and single lanes? Put in a great streetscape but leave 101 alone.

  5. If we don't have three lanes and roundabouts say goodbye to safe bike lanes and the tree canopy on the east side.
    What is wrong with roundabouts? They have been proven to be more efficient and safer.

  9. Traffic on 101 is not that bad. Plant some trees, spruce it up but no roundabouts or single lanes.
    If you like roundabouts so much, move to somewhere with lots of them, they suck here in Encinitas and should be removed.

  10. Actually, the sidewalks on El Camino real are far from "minimal" - they stretch along both sides for miles. The reason you don't see more walkers? Shopping is not consolidated enough to do without a car! Case in point. If errands include bank deposit, widget from Home Depot and trip to the post office, few would walk from the Ralph's Center north to Home Depot then circle back to the post office, lugging purchases or packages to be mailed. The same problem will exist shopping in Leucadia, regardless of what it "looks" like - one long stretch few will walk. Reality bites.

    So you do not care about having safe bike lanes and the tree canopy renewed on the east side or additional parking oppertunities?
    There is not room to solve these issues with 4 lanes and no roundabouts.
    What is wrong with roundabouts? They have been proven to be more efficient and safer.

  12. This area is perfect for 5 story mixed use with commercial and office professional mixed with residential. This will enable greater tax revenues for the city.

    You suck here in Encinitas and should be removed. In fact, car traffic on 101 isn't the worst in the county, but walking on 101 is a drag. Cars are hauling ass most of the time and when 5 is clogged, 101 is the shortcut of choice. Roundabouts move traffic efficiently and safely. They also help to slow things down. That is good.

    Most of the people arguing against roundabouts on 101 are in a hurry. I will be happy when I can walk a 101 that is vibrant because it is welcoming to walkers, not because of the rumble of trucks and cars hauling ass through town.

  14. We want to discourage Carlsbad from coming through Leucadia. Four consecutive stop signs at each block on the way into Leucadia will do way more to keep people from coming into Leucadia and using it as a drag strip cut through.

    Roundabouts are too efficient and will only serve entice commuters to come through Leucadia.

    Stop signs not roundabouts. We don't want efficiency we want to end cut through traffic.

    All way stops would work but would never get through council. they back up traffic almost as much as signals.

  20. You know, there is one anonymous poster that turns almost every post by JP or Kevin into an opportunity to boost his pro-roundabout agenda.

    Why don't you start your own blog and put your pro-roundabout comments there?

    The fireman who spoke at the last city council meeting sure did not feel roundabouts are efficient.

    Trees could be planted along the east side of Highway 101 in the railroad's right of way with their permission? As others have commented, there are many other communities that have beautiful trees in the railroad's right of way.

    There are actually very few people who favor five roundabouts on North Hwy. 101 and reducing northbound traffic to one lane. That has been demonstrated by the over 1000 signatures on the petition and the recent surveys, both here, on JP's blog, and the survey conducted through the City at the last workshop. Over 60% of those who answered the survey did not favor any of the alternatives, one through four.
