Eric Phleger Gallery is proud to announce “In a Different Light,” an exhibition of paintings on view at the gallery from May 2 through June 6, 2009. An artists’ reception will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 6-8 pm.
The 828 building is one ugly mofo but I am damn excited more art galleries are opening in Leucadia. The Andrews gallery next to Papagayo is very nice.
ReplyDeleteMore art galleries, resturants, little botiques, antique shops and other unique little owner run businesses is what gives Leucadia the flavor we want to preserve.

We have art at Bamboo etc, Caldwells, Leucadia Art Gallery and framing, Andrews Gallery, Surf Hut and the art in the other cool shops. We lost a good one on Vulcan.
Support the Arts. It is good for our community.
In the old days, the flavor we would have preserved would have been the stabbings and the drug dealers. Keeping it funky is only an ambition when the gentrification and the rich-i-fication has begun.

ReplyDeleteBeauty is in the eye of the beholder. Even an ugly three story, lot to lot line monstrosity could have redemption if it gave room for beauty. Perhaps a condition for issuance of a certificate of occupancy, or other incentives, included that businesses cherished by locals, such as locally owned ones, like surf shops, artists, craft stores, etc., are conditioned upon a percentage of occupancy? Wouldn't such a condition allow local businesses to thrive but still reward the landowner? Just brainstorming...

What ever happened to free enterprise and working to better your life.
Now too many of people feel they can do nothing, expect the government to care for them and live in one of the most desirable areas in the nation.
I think you only appreciate things if you earn them. Stop the spread of communism. Otherwise we will loosing our freedom.

One redeeming quality of the 828 building was the oak framed windows and doors, though the building was horrible when it was pink. Then someone painted it blood red and painted all the beautiful wood black. Then the planning commission approved them to augment the design and height of the building with fugly cell towers. What a sell out.
ReplyDeleteBut I too am glad a gallery is going in. When in Rome was great there, but that San Diego Kitchen place was a real yawner. Maybe an artist from the new gallery place could head the owner in the right direction with some paint.

ReplyDeleteWhat you say is true about government control. If you own your house and you want to put on a new roof or make a window in the wall... heaven forbid you do so without the city's permission! You'd think they own the place, not you. Then you complain and they say the same old thing, "this isn't tijuana." Well, I have seen nicer places in Tijuana than in some parts of Encinitas AND I've seen nice work done without the city's silly interference and expensive fees (for an inspector who is clueless).

If you concerned with toxins, try not ingesting them. You might also try drinking plenty of water and exercise might help you a bit as well. Lastly, repeat to yourself three things you appreciate and are thankful for each day.
If you do the above, I am sure you will enjoy a more prosperous life.

Seriously, you guys, it's just an art gallery. The political rant is completely unconnected to what we're trying to do here. Oh, and by the way, the color isn't all that bad and the paint is holding the wood together.

ReplyDeleteNo, the color sucks. And fine wooden window/door frames were never intended to be painted. Sealers do just as good of a job protecting wood, and those windows are not in direct sunlight most of the time. The arches are good and the pilasters ain't too shabby.
I like the color better than the last joke.
