The iconic Encinitas Streetfair is this weekend. A stunning 100,000 visitors are expected. I've loved the Streetfair ever since I was a kid even though it's not as rootsy as it used to be. Ignore the traveling corpo vendors and seek out the local artisans this weekend like my photographer friend Maggie Marsek who will be selling fine prints at her booth.

*I wish the city of Encinitas would let Leucadia use the coast highway for it's Art Walk event. Isn't closing down the entire downtown Encinitas 101 highway the ultimate "choke point"? Yet we always seem to be able to survive the weekend. *sigh*

ReplyDeleteIf DEMA is a nonprofit, anyone has the right to walk in off the street and request to see their tax returns - that's the law for all nonprofits. They are bound by law to produce their tax returns upon request.

ReplyDeleteIs DEMA the group that chooses vendors for the street fair? I'm always so put off by the crap that is peddled there, gives it a cheap, infomercial/scam feel. It's difficult to find the local artisans from the junk, the junk takes up so much room! I'd love to see more local artists and handcrafted items for sale over the 'free massage' and 'check your credit scores' booths.

ReplyDeleteThis is a scam that makes just a few people tons of money. How many vendors are going to be there? 300? Multiply that by maybe a thousand dollars each for rent (?) Whats the city, namely us, get in return for our closed highway, tons of tourists, packed roads, etc? I would hope maybe 50% of the take but its probably more like a few campaign donations. Government run amok...

Close the highway permanently and let's have a year around street fair. We don't need cars. Send those cars to second street to go around.
ReplyDeleteNaw, the street fairs have been a growing and fun moneymaker since Dan Trifone breathed new life into them and Peder Norby continued to make them better since the 90's. Artistic Pianos used to complain about them. But when they made a $26,000 sale because of someone attracted to Encinitas because of the Street Faire, they never complained again. Visibility is always good for good businesses and Street Faires give an emense amout of exposure to businesses "closed off" for a day or two.

ReplyDeleteYes. As with Leucadia Pizzeria that became very successful and had to move twice to accomodate their clientel, Artistic Pianos needed a a larger place to vend. Their current location is three times the size of the one they had in the Lumberyard.

ReplyDeleteA well-known musical instrument somewhat resembling the harpsichord, and consisting of a series of wires of graduated length, thickness, and tension, struck by hammers moved by keys and played by children and adults with above average intelligence.

Maggie helped brighten up the street fair today along with Hey Bison graphic arts, Mirandon's wild resin work, rubber ducky for charity and quite a few other boohts.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite though was those rad twins selling shamwhoas, which I'm told are twice as awesome as the sham wows!
