Hello, my name is Tony Kranz and I would like to serve you as a member of the Encinitas City Council. To get my campaign started, there will be a free coffee party at the Pannikin on Sunday, March 14th, from 6-8 p.m. Stop by and introduce yourself and let me know what you think are the most important issues facing our community.
I’ve been a lurker on the Leucadia blog for the last several years and have enjoyed the energy and information that gets exchanged here. I intend to use this forum to present ideas and, through the commenting that might follow, I look forward to learning about some of your ideas (Anonymous though they may be). In this first post, I wanted to share the picture above, which is from a couple weeks ago following the Iwo Jima Reunion held at Camp Pendleton. I’m on the left and my brother Jimmer is on the right. The man in the middle is my father, Jerry Kranz, who came to California in the early 40’s for Marine Corps boot camp. He later fought in many Pacific battles, and was lucky enough to survive and return to his home in Minnesota, where he took advantage of the GI Bill and became a teacher. In 1960, having finally tired of shoveling snow, he returned to California to teach PE and coach at Earl Warren Junior High. I was eight months old at the time, so didn’t have much choice in the matter, but I’m very happy that my parents decided to make Encinitas our home.
Obviously, Encinitas has changed a lot since 1960. It is my firm belief that knowing how it was is very useful when making decisions that will significantly effect how it will be. I look forward to earning your vote so that you trust me to help guide our community into the future.

Danny is owned by the unions and gave them a 40% increase in pensions. By doing so, he destroyed the financial future of Encinitas. Its going to be very painful in the future because of Dan Dalager.

Uh, I just made the connection Tony... your dad is Coach Kranz from Earl Warren Jr High! He was my PE teacher at EW in '77. Classic, remember he used to make us run "tickets."

Rich Schroeder. If you know him call him and encourage him to run. He lives in Cardiff. Surfs Swamis and Cardiff Reef. He rehabs houses for a living. Has lived in Encinitas 20 years. He is level headed and knows how the city treats individuals trying to use city services. Doesn't like it.
ReplyDeleteThat is just what we don't need - a bunch of people running against each other and splitting the vote for Kranz and Barth. That will assure the reelection of Dan Dalager and probably lead to the defeat of Theresa Barth who is the only brain on the council at present.

ReplyDeleteYou guys don't get it. Tony will be competing with votes that Teresa would have had. Danny is all set with his developer friends and the staff. Unless Teresa is not running again, we are screwed. Start thinking of a council with Doug Long and Danny cause that is what you are going to get. Sorry to spoil the party.

ReplyDeleteWhy not say you are qualified because you understand municipal budget processes, and give examples of your knowledge & how it was gained. Or that you understand the goals of the community, and how you will move forward to achieve them. Or that you understand the issues that the community faces... possibly specify what issues you think are important.
Sorry, I'm not going to vote for a good ole' boy just because he's local and his daddy was a pe coach. I've had enough of leaders who were elected on their daddy's coattails.
And who wants coffee at 6pm in the evening? Beer yes, coffee no.
Politicians like to be vague & familiar, not specific. Let's not elect another happy go lucky dumbass.

@9:14, in 1983 I moved to Anchorage, Alaska, and lived there for eight years. In 1991, I moved to St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and lived there for six years. While in Alaska, I joined the Army National Guard and was trained in tactical Air Traffic Control and served in the for 10 years. You're right to consider this sort of experience important.

ReplyDeleteTony: What does it mean when you say you will not take money from staff or anyone doing direct business with the City? So if Doug Manchester offered you money would you take it? Many of the developers don't do business with the City, they hire people to do it. So the question is will you take money from developers, whether they work with the City or not. You are already sounding like a politician with the comment you made. Not that there is anything wrong with being a politician, but I want someone that is honest, transparent, and can say yes or no to simple questions. Thanks

@1:52, were Doug Manchester or David Meyer to offer contributions--which they won't--I will politely decline. The reason I answered your question the way I did is that I have friends in the construction trade that are doing no business in Encinitas. So if they offer contributions I would likely accept them.

ReplyDeleteWelcome Tony! Not an easy venue to toss your hat into, but remember most of the idiotic comments are from one or two vapid posters. Looking forward to hearing your ideas. My question is: do you support letting construction projects dump dirt aka sand on our beaches? And if you do, can you articulate a reason why residential owners should not be given the same wink and a nod?
ReplyDelete@bonndi, thanks for the welcome. The beach sand replenishment program reminds me of the Joni Mitchell lyrics about having “paved paradise and put up a parking lot”. It would be nice if natural erosion from inland were able to deliver sand to the coast, but those days are gone. So now we use the dump truck method of delivery, which isn’t nearly as effective but is likely better than nothing.
ReplyDeleteThe city has worked with several agencies to get the Sand Compatibility and Opportunistic Use Program (SCOUP) in place. It includes testing the sand to make sure it isn’t too muddy and stuff. (For example, some of the Scripps sand didn’t qualify for placement on the beach.) However, the resolution the city council passed adopting SCOUP had this clause:
“Whereas, a rigorous and comprehensive mitigation and monitoring will be implemented by Encinitas as opportunistic projects are performed...”
Per the staff report of 7/16/08, here’s what that means:
Monitoring for the following will be performed after each project:
> Beach profile;
> Surfing conditions;
> Turbidity;
> Sediment grain size/gradation;
> Traffic;
> Biological resources including grunion and endangered and threatened species;
> Hazards and hazardous materials
I’m disappointed that when the Scripps SCOUP item came up on the agenda, there wasn’t a detailed report about each of these items which were monitored from the Pacific Station SCOUP action. So it’s time to get the staff to prepare some detailed follow-up reports in order to ensure that the alleged benefits of the SCOUP are actually being realized and that we’re not just muddying the waters. I would even consider the allocation of some funds to hire scientific experts to do the analysis.
Nothing should be dumped on the beach with a wink and a nod and because of the important testing that is done to the sand that does get dumped, I can’t imagine it would ever be practical to let a homeowner dump sand on the beach.
Needless to say, our beaches are this city’s greatest treasures. We must be sure that SCOUP is not fouling them before another project is approved.
Hey! Jerry Kranz was my P.E. teacher at Oak Crest. You know, he was the most no-B.S. teacher I ever had (kind of intimidating, but always fair - the Marine in him, no doubt), and I remember he would always ride a little white scooter to school. Even in Jr. High I was thinking, "Huh - that tough dude can get away with riding that scooter? That's balls-ee. He's the real deal." In retrospect, he saving money and being eco-friendly before it was cool. Never met you, Tony, but good luck!

ReplyDeleteI remember Tony from San Dieguito High. He was a great leader then and I believe he will continue. He lived here as a local but moved away enough to appreciate coming back and seeing Encinitas in a new light. Good luck Tony...reading some comments, you will need it! I support you. Class of '78.

2. Fiscally responsible government. Meaning put any big debt item to a vote a the public.
3. Building a community park with the interests of all stakeholders included.
4. Trees.
5. Issues that make Encinitas's quality of life higher for our fine beach town.

Tony will be a great councilmember!
I grew up knowing Tony and his whole famdamly. I lost count how many siblings he has, but remember there was always so much going on, a visit to the Kranz' home felt like dropping in on the Waltons. My dad's been best friends with his dad since the stone age. When it comes to great, hard working, capable, talented, trustworthy and enthusiastic Americans, few beat the Kranz's.
