These things should never be designed in isolation, but that's what happens when developers do the planning instead of the city. There needs to be a footbridge at least, but forcing cars out onto Garden View is pretty lame too. Oh and the sea of asphalt at Encinitas Ranch is a horrible waste of land. People don't even walk from one end to the other. Would be a great area to infill with some higher density residential, what with public transit and shopping. Maybe we can even get some entertainment options where the exoskeletons of Linens & Things and Home Expo lay.

Adding residential to the shopping center does not reduce the distance withing the shopping center. It does not reduce the distance to the shopping center.
Adding residential does nothing for the people who live in Encinitas now except add more automobile traffic to the streets, unless you own Encinitas Ranch and then you get to add another $100 million to your bank account.
It's the economy - the area was over built with commercial space. Home Expo was just another Home Depot with overpriced Chinese crap - when the housing market collapsed, so did the accessory stores. I was surprised it even flew for awhile - their merchandise was trashy.
Encinitas Ranch center is a glorified strip-mall. When your only saving grace is a Target store, you're screwed. Unless you're an Ecke, in which case it's a cash cow regardless.
Encinitas Ranch is a strip mall people drive from store to store sometimes driving right through the parking spaces to save time. It's not nearly as nice as the Forum which is by far more walkable and at least pleasant to the eye. I do prefer Amazon as I'm not much of a shopper.
Target and boring cheap stores vs Sur La Table, Apple, Jimbos, Geppetto's. There is no comparison. The Ecke's went for cheap over quality. I guess it pays off.
I really do try to support local business by spending locally. For example I love the new Baker & Olive shop on ECR in the "24 Hour Fitness/99¢ Store" center). B & O is a great addition to the local food offerings, which has improved tremendously in recent years.
I also choose independent businesses over corporate chains a lot of the time, though I know some franchises are locally owned, too.
Yeah, I gotta say, I shop at Encinitas Ranch only rarely because I don't need much at those stores. I go to Jimbo's, Apple, Surly Table ;-), and Tilly's (gag, b/c I have a 12 yo son who spends his own money on clothes there) - and occasionally some other Forum stores, mostly for things I just can't find in Encinitas. Sure, I really hate the Forum's squeezed parking and driving layout (so it's most convenient to park once and walk around) , but I've always really, really hated the ER sprawling parking lot. The crazy ER layout and driving lanes makes it dangerous, inconvenient, and unnecessarily time-consuming to walk from stores on disparate ends of the center, but I try to walk between stores whenever I have to stop there.
We need a new movie theater in one of the empty box stores - one with a different variety of movies, not the usual blockbuster trash.
And the other day I drove into the strip mall on the West side of ECR between Encinitas Blvd and via Molena (Wiegand Plaza?). What a ghost town, especially with that western decor motif. I feel for the businesses that remain. Must be difficult to generate customer traffic.

Interesting that Big Lots is coming to Encinitas. That chain has been shutting down stores due to the bad economy. I guess they figure upscale Encinitas will shop their inferior merchandise to save money. The poor will downscale to the dumpsters! Big Lots sells garbage - it isn't that much different than a 99c store except it costs more.
People buy junk thinking "well it was cheap, so it lasts only one year. Who cares." But....the cheap stuff also exacts an environmental cost. First, where it is made (usually in China) and where it is disposed (here or sent to China). Plus, we pay for wars and diplomacy to maintain the resources to make the junk. Better to buy a $100 higher end item (say from Sur La Table) that lasts once every 10 years, than a $20 item that breaks every year.
not sure but the shoe pavilion/golf galaxy was a total disaster. i forget which one it was but at one point they had "GRAND OPENING" and "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS" signs up at the same time.

Maybe they are going to occupy the old Expo Center - that certainly has the space and parking. That'd certainly put a dent in Home Depots revenues - is there room for two home improvement centers so close? We'll see . .

How exactly is ER not walkable? I can easily walk from Best Buy to Target. The distance is much shorter than from Fred's to the Panikin.
