Parade canceled? part II

Since people have been in a shoot the messenger mode lately I won't add much to this North County Times article by Adam Kaye. Click it, read it, then leave an angry comment on the NCT website.

Fate of Encinitas Christmas Parade in question

From the article:

Typically, the city hosts the event, but that changed in January, when the City Council agreed to hand over responsibilities to the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. A leader of the chamber, however, said Monday that the business group might not have the resources to produce the parade this year.

"The question is, will we be able to put together an adequate level of funding and will we be able to tap into a large enough volunteer base," said Gary Tucker, chief executive officer.

In January, when the City Council set its goals for the year, chamber representatives offered to take control of the popular parade, which attracts dozens of participants and hundreds of spectators to the route through downtown Encinitas. Council members were supportive; the chamber produced the parade before the city incorporated in 1986.

The council never actually voted to stop producing the parade, but in May approved a city operating budget that includes no money for it.

In recent years, Encinitas had budgeted $37,500 to cover security, waste-collection and other costs associated with the event.

Tucker said the chamber does not plan to ask the city for money.

"There's no question about our desire to do it," he said. "There's a question of whether we do it this year or next year."

In my opinion even considering not having a parade in 2007 is completely unacceptable, especially after all the name change drama.

  5. It's bad enough that Encinitas does not have a 4th of July fireworks display and now this? I thought this was a family oriented city.

  6. It could be a sequel: "The Grinch that stole the Christmas, er, eh, Holiday Parade."

  7. rug- twist in the wind, man.

  8. What do YOU think the story is man? It isn't difficult if you look down the right rabbit hole. You are not looking in the right places. Too much attention on the rug and not enough on the real problem. This is not about the WU!

  9. You are not looking at the bigger issue. WU is not the problem. Keep looking further and you will find a larger issue.

  11. The Parade is boring, stupid, and too long. They should cancel it.

  12. Danny Dalager is looking to get a second year of "Save Christmas for Chistians momentum" Pure Political posturing. Jerome Stocks, Danny Dalager, and Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association board member Doug Long are setting up the Chamber to be fall guys, so an already organized group of Christians can ride into the save the parade. Complete theatre. Dalager and Stocks are already preparing for their time on Clear Channel Communications and FOX NEWS. Gary Tucker meets with Phil Cotten Tuesday August 6th.

I had this discussion with Doug Long 7/31/07. Long said the Christmas for Christians group already have sponsors lined up. When I asked who they were, he said it was a secret.

  13. WU-you don't know who who WU is? Shame! Try watching The Big Lebowski and all will be revealed. Even the twists and turns of this drama. As I said, WU is not your man. Bob does have an accuarte viewpoint. I heard it thru the grapecvine.

  14. Imagine that, the evil Christian Vast Right Wing Conspiracy plotting a parade...

  15. isn't it illegal for a city to use a parade to promote a religious agenda, especially on public property?

  16. In all the macinations of the parade-chrismas-holiday-political-press posturing,
please all parties on all sides,

do not forget about the kids. That is the reason for the parade.

    It needs to happen.

  17. T'was the night before Xmas and all through the city lucky residents who had received use permits decided to join the parade. All the use permits were tucked into their places within the building projects with care and visions of larger houses and crowed streets danced in the air.
Children were marching to earn extra community credit for school, adults marched to advertise their businesses.

  18. IMHO a common misconception regarding the separation clause (of church and state). Freedom of religion is protected by the Constitution; Congess just can't make any law establishing...

  19. Nothing needs to happen.

And when anyone says don't forget the kids, I wonder if they are speaking only of the christian kids. How about the Jewish kids, and Hindu kids, Buddhist kids, Wiccan kids, Pagan kids, Scientology kids, etc. etc?

    ReplyDelete
  20. oh yeah, the kids. Better program them and brainwash them while you still have time. Turn them into little consumers and CEOs and use public property to force YOUR religious views on the citizens of Encinitas. That "for the children" crap doesn't cut it anymore.

  21. How is the chamber in over its head? This is an organization that knows how to extract money from the city council.

The council gives the chamber $90,000 a year for a visitor center that is run by volunteers.

The council gave the chamber $90,000 to move some tee shirts and coffee mugs less than a quarter of a mile from the shopping center to a newly built auto repair shop. Quite handy if visitors need auto repairs.

Don't cry for the chamber. Shed the tears for the taxpayers.

  22. Okaaay... religious requirement for parade entrants & spectators?? Don't think so. Forcing THEIR views on the citizens?? Damn those scouts & brownies and their Jedi mind tricks. Better get a new tinfoil hat...

  23. Says a lot about Gary Tucker that he allows Mike Andreen to be in charge of he chamber's publication. The type of scam Bob speaks of is totally something Andreen would organize.

  24. I heard through the grapevine that there were plans to have Roger Hedgecock as a Grand Marshall. Hell, let's REALLY celebrate the Season and get Ann Coulter and the Minutemen, and the Operation Rescue people and the snake handlers and people who speak in tongues!! This may be our last chance before the Terrorists come and kill us all!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Blaming Andreen is too convienent. Stocks, Long, and Dalager are responsible for the the Xmas parade scam, they are the politicians trying to retain thier control Of the Encinitas City Council

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bob reports on the comments of three of our counselmen which are quite inflammatory, if accurate. Sadly, based on my knowledge of Dalager's mentality, it could be true.

Nothing like religious hatred to liven up a sleepy little town. And maybe we can even have some real action like Belfast and Kosovo.

It doesn't seem to take a lot to turn neighbors into blood enemies. And then we can all wear our crosses and little darwin fish of various stripes, just like gang colors.

Good things are always so easy to destroy.

  27. I wonder if by 'a large enough volunteer base'....they considered how many people have excluded themselves from wanting to help due to the 'name change'.

I for one will not even think of volunteering, unless the name is changed, and please note, I celebrate Christmas.

Besides the parade is the same year after year - the same clowns, the same vintage cars, etc. It's not like its innovative in any way.
