More Swamis Zoo Coverage

The North County Times covered the Swamis crowd too.

Swamis services hundreds of surfers a day when there is swell. This picture is of a moderate crowd for swamis. Half the crowd probably never surfed Swamis before. In surf folklore, or in other places in California, many of those "randoms" would be vibed off the peak because they are super dangerous to themselves and others in a big crowd. At Swamis they are just part of the herd.

I love this SDReader quote from about year ago,
Since there was a shark attack in the news, I asked a few surfers [at Cardiff] if they worried about that. They laughed and said no. One said, "It's more dangerous being around certain surfers that don't know what they're doing. If you get hit in the head by a board, it isn't pretty."
Swamis is way more dangerous than Cardiff because the crowd is thicker and contains more people who are underskilled.

There is minimal self-regulation in the crowd at Swamis. There are positives and dangers associated with that, but claiming that Swamis is this super localized spot is lame and desperate.

Watch the real-time Swamis crowd here.

Pipes and Cardiff Reef are more localized than Swamis.

  3. anon 513,

Please expand on your point. I think you don't know what you are talking about.

Most of the association geezers are from Cardiff and you don't see them very often. They are rare in the line up and most people don't know who they are.

Most encinitas surfers think the SSA is stupid and if they tried to take over and hold a contest at swamis they would loose even more year-round respect.

  4. Let's charge a fee to surf Swamis. We could use the money to improve the dog parks. Both are city assets. Anything left over could be used to pay bonuses to city staff.

  5. I don't think the level of localism in the water is well predicted by the presence of organizations named after surf breaks.

Maybe things were different in the 60s.

  6. SSA is the biggest joke in town. We chased their bullshit contest out of Cardiff by meeting with the state parks a few times. As a result the State increased the price for an event at Cardiff to an amount that SSA can't afford and they are forced to hold it at Moonlight.
The same strategy will work for Linda's ego-wash at Swamis. I'm sure Danny and others will let it happen....they won't have a water permit cause it isn't going through the State parks dept.....100+ of us will all paddle out and surf with the girlies in their heat....then the same thing will happen at Swamis that happened at Cardiff.

When is our City Council going to be arrested for stealing from us?

When is Encinitas City Council going to address this issue?

ESCONDIDO: Pension reform is goal of new city task force
Union leaders leery of agenda, misleading data

    Story Discussion By DAVID GARRICK - dgarrick@nctimes.com | Posted: Saturday, December 12, 2009 10:45 pm | (11) Comments

Font Size: Default font size Larger font size City officials hope to make the difficult process of slashing employee pensions a bit smoother and more collegial by meeting with union officials this winter on something they are calling a "pension review task force."

The task force has been described by city officials as an effort to "collaboratively" and openly discuss their desire to reduce pension benefits, which have been blamed for a budget crisis that has forced the city to cut library hours, recreation and many other programs.

But labor leaders said last week that they were leery of the city's agenda with the task force in particular and pension reform in general.

The leaders said recent comments from city officials indicate they plan to take the same uncompromising approach to pensions as other California officials that the unions accuse of advocating reform by using distorted statistics to stir up taxpayer angst.

Reformers make their case with unusual pensions, the labor leaders said, such as former Escondido Assistant City Manager Jack Anderson, who has been receiving more than $195,000 per year in pension benefits since he retired in 2007.

How much will our City Manager Phil Cotton and Planning Director Patrick Murphy pull in a year on their pensions when they retire in a year or so. There are soon going to be many retired pulling in close to $200,000 a year in retirement forever!!!!

This is why the City is broke and has no money for other needed projects like parks and the beach areas. I will not be votingfor Danny Dalager because he voted yes for the huge pension increases for himself and all city employees.

Will this even be brought up in the upcoming elections?

Vote shows pension situation is hot button

Bill Hoffman is about to retire from the Oceanside Fire Department.

A practical joker, I thought, when he told me that. He has no gray hair. No belly. He’s only 51 and I would have guessed 45, easy.

To get out so early, Hoffman didn’t hit the lottery. He didn’t find oil in his backyard, either.

He put his 30 years in.

“You’re right. It’s great,” he said from the tiny Oceanside Station No. 2 on Thursday.

I’m not about to bash Hoffman’s good fortune, but I’m not giving him a gold watch either. He did his job and played by rules that were fairly negotiated.

Those rules may be changing, though.

A union-funded effort to recall Oceanside City Councilman Jerry Kern — who’s been attacking the firefighters’ staffing levels and benefit packages — was rejected by voters this past week.

If its such a hot botton, hopefully people running against Dalager will educate the public that he is voting to backrupt the City, so he gets a higher pension.

Danny Dalager is bankrupting Encinitas, for his own benefit. No wonder him and Linda see eye to eye.

Get the word out Dalager is really bad for Encinitas.

Dalager sells out- They are ALL bad for the city's taxpayers.

    Get rid of them all.

If after 3 years of COLA increases, you are earning more retired than while working, then is something wrong with the system AND THE PEOPLE THAT CREATED THE SYSTEM.

Until you march on city hall with flaming torches and pitch forks, THEY will not listen to you.
