Sheffo Reflects

From the in box:

One of the three or four scenarios I considered for the race was the "Revenge of New Encinitas" scenario. I think it is that one that held sway last night.

While I thought that the Obama wave might help left-leaning candidates way down the ballot (people like Rachelle), it turns out that all politics are indeed local.

[KC note: Most people have little idea what is going on at city hall and a huge slug of Encinitas just wants to "build the damn park already." ]

In this case, the local issue was the Hall property.

[This issue was thoughtfully commanded by Bonds, Stocks, Long, and Aceti. Everyone loves kids and beaches.]

In the end, it was the SUV-driving soccer moms and dads who came out big for Stocks and Bonds and decided the race in their favor.

In fact, if there's anyone who should be upset this morning, it's Doug Long, who would be a councilman-elect if it were not for Jim Bond.

My only other observation is that, considering he came within less than a percentage point of Rachelle, Bob Nanninga ran a damn good race.

[Bob was well organized and had the most interesting media (see below)]

I don't regret running at all. I learned a lot, met some great people, and broadened my horizons a little. And I take solace in the fact that many other candidates who were either incumbents (Ed Gallo in Escondido) or had some prior political experience (Jim Gibson in Oceanside) or were well-funded first-timers (Farrah Douglas in Carlsbad) also lost.

  1. Sheffo- I told you how to win. You didn't listen. I even said you would finish 6th or worse and I was correct about that also. Hell you finished behind Brandenberg, and he was like a deer in the headlights lost. Next time pay attention, I might be a bum, but I know what I'm talking about. Both you and McCain deserved to lose, your focus and campaigns were shit!!

  2. Althought it is disheartening that Team Nanninga failed in our attempt to bring unwavering environmental stewardship to the Encinitas City Council in 2008, the Nanninga for Encinitas campaign will not be discouraged or distracted from winning a seat on the Encinitas City Council. With vision and purpose I will continue to serve the residents of Encinitas as an environmental activist and community advocate, and ask others to do the same.
That said, I encourage all who voted for me to keep the faith and start talking to your friends and neighbors with the goal of enrolling them in the Nanninga 2010campaign.
Over the next few weeks we will assess the outcome of the 2008 election precinct by precinct. Once that data is in Team Nanninga will devise a winning strategy, bringing together a progressive coalition to challenge the entrenched status quo.

  3. With that said, good luck Bob. You are going to need it to unseat Gomer Pile. The uninformed masses seem to love ol squirrel hunting howdy dudie!.... You campaign will have to identify and list the real damage that Dan Dalager has done in Encinitas. Here is a free one:

He voted for huge salary 14% and pension increases (full retirement pay of your highest paying year at 60 FOREVER). that means for someone who retires at City Hall making say %100,000 per year ( there are a ton) by the time they are 80 years old, the tax payers will have paid them $2,000,000. You do the math. There are alot of employees at City Hall. Danny's part in bankrupting our City shows his complete lack of financial understanding and leadership. He is not a business man, just another government sluppp.... that right he voted for the same huge salary and pension increases for himself as well.

Don't wait for him to do the hit on you. Plan an active campaign to educate the public early about how bad Dalager is for Encinitas.

  4. Teresa Barth won with the least amount of votes ever in a city council election (approximately 4,000).

We need to go after this incumbent next! Heck,I even think Seldon or Aceti has a chance of beating her.

Let's start now in removing Barth from city council!

  5. I for one will be talking to my neighbors about BOB.

    GO NANNAGA 2010!!!

  6. The only ticket that had a chance this year was the HOULIHAN/NANNAGA one!

    Collier was a distraction...

  7. Let, admit it. The Soccer Mom's kicked out ass!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Whatever.... Collier is the most solid person in Encinitas.

I am just glad that she ran in this year’s campaign. I hope she does, but I would not blame her if she chooses not to next time.

Anyone spitting vile at Collier is a clear enemy of mine. That includes Jerome Stocks and Doug Long.

  9. I want the Suv's and soccer mom's to have what they want, what they voted for. When do we get the 90 foot cell towers. I think that they will look good next to the seven story buildings along El Camino Real. They can design the buildings to go with the towers and the lights. It will be wonderful!

  10. Soccer Moms (with fat boy Jerome and dumb ass Dan) attached are clueless and will bankrupt our City and their own families bank account.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I propose 5 story buildings along El Camino Real. Lets have a modern inland big City to compliment our quaint real coastal downtown. Our tallest building can have a roller coaster on top.

  12. Five isn't tall enough! Sandag wants midrange in that area - that's 4 to 7 stories. People who voted for Stocks and Bond want more, they want seven stories.

  14. Joe's got it wrong. It wasn't the SUV-driving soccer moms who won the vote for Stocks and Bond. It was incumbency. It also won it for Maggie, but she topped both Stocks and Bond, and I can guarantee it wasn't the soccer moms who gave her this margin.

Harriet Seldin, along with Joe, made a big point of supporting the sports complex. They finished dead last, only above Betsy Aceti, who had withdrawn from the race. I think it all shows that a significant percentage of the voting public is uninformed. The high vote totals of Collier and Nanninga show that at least a segment of the public knew what they wanted.

In 2006 Teresa Barth won by more than 4000 votes. Doug Long the stalker whined that Tom Brown stole the election from him. Who stole it from him this time? The answer: James Bond!

  15. I think the Nanniga Campaign ran a very effective race, when you consider the amount of money that was raised by the other candidates (who placed above him).

Bob will always have my vote!

Don't give up on us Bob, we can make it happen!

    ReplyDelete
  16. If incumbency was the barrier, why didn't any of the challengers mount a strong campaign that targeted the record of the current city council?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Can all you candidates PLEASE pick up your damn signs that are littered throughout the city...they are as bad a graffitti but more insidious.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Now I've heard everything! This coming after my candidate, Bob Nanninga, lost his race . . . (and we did pretty well with NO money!)
Apparently the head of one of Cardiff's schools' parent associations (a staff member) called members of the association and told them who to vote for!! Basically folks were told to vote for the incombants that won! So what's the unspoken threat here? Well, if you don't vote for these people then your kid . . .
What has this world come to?

  19. Stocks, Bond and Long relied on voter ignorance to win this election. Check out the campaign financing statements in the following link

    http://archive.ci.encinitas.ca.us/weblink7/browse.aspx?startid=632517

Notice that nearly ALL OF Stocks contributors are businesses - very few individuals. Contrast that with Houlihan, Collier, Nanninga - even with Bond. It's striking. Now you know why Stocks has all the large signs and mailers. Also in that same link, you can see the payments that Stocks, Bond and Long made to the companies which sent out the deceptive mailer - posing as something from the Democratic party.

When your strategy is to intentionally deceive for personal gain, as was the case in the distribution of a fake Democratic mailer endorsing Obama, Stocks, Bond and Long in the same breath, I would say you are at least guilty of perpetrating a fraud on the voters. Are the voters to blame because they can't or don't bother to see through it? I don't think we should be required to examine political mailers with a magnifying glass to determine whether their intent is forthright.

  20. My question to Bob is a practical one. You got 6,976 in 2000, 5791 in 2002 and 6394 votes this time. If you do run next time, how do you propose to come up with that extra 3-4000 votes it will take to top Dalager. BTW, Teresa got about 8600 votes last time. The turnout will surely be about half of this time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Just the facts...
Teresa Barth received 8436 votes in 2006....more than Stocks & Bond received in this election.

Doug Long received 7191 in 2006 more than he received this year.

2006 was not a presidential election year and had a lower voter turn-out.

  22. I love that picture,

It reminds me of similar images through the years of two bit dictators, potentates and self described visionaries.

    Very striking pose.

  23. Joe - you did a good job and I hope you continue to pursue public service. Just wasn't your season this time.

  24. Joe,

    Agree with Bonndi.

lighten up a bit on the dogmatic stances. Its good to have a compass and a moral certitude to guide decision making but all isses are not black and white including taxes and fees.

Hope you try again, good job and stay involved.

  25. Hey Joe-

You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders. Get a real job instead of working for a politician and then come back once you get real world experience.

  29. KC, it looks as if your LB endorsements and Home Alliance Group FAILED miserably...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I wouldn't say they failed. KC and Bob Bondii were able to "start" up the negative campaigning that was so effective -NOT!

Take your negativity and go, this city doesn't need any more and they surely don't go it - ask Maggie, Jerome and James.

I do hope were talking about the same KC - Kevin Cummings.

  32. Dear Joe

thanks for running (As well as all the other candidates.)

Anyone who takes the effort and time to run for a council race is admirable, IMHO. And a little bit crazy, to be sure

    C'mon, RPBS

    be nice now

I assume this anonymous person means Kevin Cummins. You should know that Kevin was involved in NO campaigning and he endorsed nobody in this last election. He gave no money, support or even had a sign up in his yard for any candidate.

Kevin had nothing to do with the Home Town Alliance or Bonde's activities.

Pointing out ways to make our city a better place to live and making sure our city is financially smart is something I'm sure Kevin will continue to do. I think he almost always give a constructive recommendation when pointing out flaws at city hall. Some of you get angry about this but somebody has to do it.

If trying to help the city avoid serious financial straights by fighting to keep the city from overspending millions on the Mossey dealership or giving staff a 15% raise while going into a deep recession is a bad idea, then I sure hope he comes up some more bad ideas.

Also, the Leucadia Blog had ZERO to do with Hometown Alliance.

  34. Just a comment for those that question K.C. and his motives.

K.C. was very concerned about the use of public, affordable housing monies associated with the purchase of the Encinitas Boathouses.

It was a $ number that was not insignificant.

He asked many questions all in the rhelm to protect the taxpayer or in this case the fee payer, and make sure that the recipiants of the affordable housing, or appriciation in value of the Boathouses was not going to benifit any family members of the major players or funders that were putting the deal together.

The oversight was appriciated and helped us make sure we were communicating accuratly what our intent was in preserving the Boathouses.

Bottom line. Kevin was involved, concerned enough to make sure it was not a scam, and applauded the effort with a nice posting on the ETF blog. Any project public or private should welcome such oversight by concerned citizens that just want to be sure they are not being scamed or fleeced.

He did not grandstand or draw attention to himself, he was concerned and that is a good thing.

keep it up and dont let the boozos get you down!

I for one like the young guns getting involved with new media and helping preserve and make better as they see it, Encintas.

The General Plan update is huge and needs to be watched.
