The Coast News has posted a video of what appears to be a speech by the Chamber's new director. In it, the new director says he's floating an idea that would be the biggest thing that ever happened to our community.

ReplyDeleteBest of luck to the fresh new Chamber under the leadership of Ken Gross. Cleaning house and removing all the previous cancerous personalities was the best thing the COC ever did. Continue to focus on whats best for a unique and self sustaining surf town called Encinitas and we all win.

I am afraid I am going to hijacker hell, bit since the Chamber isn't getting many posts I will add one about term limits. Today's Sign on San Diego has an interesting article against term limits. Teresa Barth, and the Cardiff Town Council sent them out by e-mail. Ironically the U.T. was all for them when they wanted Willie Brown out. However, their tune has change now that it is a little closer to home. They are basically stating the State's troubles are because of term limits. I call B.S. The State of California's troubles began when Proposition 13 came into being. Now, before any of you behead me, let me explain something about Prop 13. For those who were around and voted on it-and I did- we got sold a bill of goods. All of the ads were about the little old lady losing her house because of higher property taxes. Fair enough, I said, and voted for it. However, and this is a big however, it was never intended for the little old lady. It was intended for big business to make a fortune by not paying their fair share of taxes. It is called incorporation folks. Incorporate and you sell to another corporation, that new corporation doesn't have to pay higher taxes That's because a corporation isn't an individual. They pay what the other corporation paid. Individuals have to pay the higher taxes, but, how about on a huge apartment complex or a high rise corporately owned? NO, they don't! The trouble now is that Prop. 13 has become a "sacred cow". No one had better touch it, or "off with their heads" Since I have a concussion at the moment, no big deal to me. Please, at least research it before you come to any conclusions, that is all I am asking. I wish Prop. 13 had been better explained. It would never have passed if it was just for the little old lady. No money would have been spent on those fancy and costly ads. As soon as I hear back from the County Registrar of Voters I will post more, if the higher powers, namely Kevin and J.P. don't shut me down. Tune in and turn on.-Your minds that is.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that term limits are not the problem with the state. The problem with the state is a huge spending problem and the biggest welfare budget in the world.
In the last 10 years, the state government has doubled in size. Ridiculus. How quickly can we shed our free enterprise country were liberty is king and people work for a living and through frugal saving can better their life.
In the last 2 years, it seems California more embraces the European socialistic way of life more than our previous capitalistic society. The big problem is it is unsustainable. Just look whats happening in France and England. If I get 45k from the government for doing nothing but going to the beach, or I get 55k for working my ass off, I will take the 45k everytime. And so will most people. CA is in trouble, businesses and brain drain is leaving CA. The state will no survive with everyone working at Starbucks and being a Realtor.
It is sooooo funny to listen to these politicians cry about how the low man in America is struggling. Apparently, none of these politicians have traveled throughout the world to see how 90% of humans live. I can tell you our welfare cases are considered rick in 90% of the worlds population. I love whats happening in CA. We either correct the problems are you will see the fastest elimination of the middle class and we will look like Mexico in 5 years.
Agreed. We are heading toward being just like Mexico. It is 10 years off not five years. Environmental issues will be blown off because things will be so dire.
ReplyDeleteEven if we got rid of prop 13 and taxes were raised we will still be in a huge hole because of pension liabilities and the HUGE burden of social programs for the poor, much of the poor being imported from south of the border. Its a reality not blame.
Take a look at the state budget.

The coastal railroad through Southern California is the nation's second-busiest passenger railroad. The portion in San Diego County is served by cross-country Amtrak trains and commuter Coaster and Metrolink trains. And it also has freight traffic.
Of the 60 miles within San Diego County ---- between Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego and the Orange County line ---- there is a second track for about half the distance.
Linda Culp, SANDAG senior transportation planner, said the agency has a plan to boost the double-track mileage from 32 miles to 56 miles by 2030.
However, the plan is largely unfunded, save for $23 million set aside for a mile of track in Sorrento Valley. And SANDAG is hoping the stimulus package can give it a boost.
"This is really an opportunity that we shouldn't pass up," Culp said.
A second track is needed all along the corridor to increase its capacity, she said. Already, the railroad handles all the trains it can accommodate, or 73 a day. That includes 24 Amtrak, 26 Coaster, 16 Metrolink and seven freight trains.
SANDAG is aiming to increase the railroad's capacity to 79 trains a day in 2015, 93 trains a day in 2025 and 119 trains a day in 2030.
Culp said the agency would like to squeeze more commuter trains onto the tracks and speed up travel times.

ReplyDeleteDr. Lorri - about Prop 13. Only 8% of properties are at issue. If not for the constraints Prop 13 placed on lawmakers, they'd have destroyed the state that much earlier. Current California problems stem from overspending, not a lack of revenue and an uncontrolled influx of illegal aliens, not Proposition 13.

It is their blog, Seems as if at least one person doesn't like term limits, as most of my last comments were on Prop. 13. I appreciate this blog and will continue posting until I get booted off. That would be fair enough. I love Encinitas and have considered this my home for the last 25 years. I am just tired of the B.S. at City Hall. Maybe term limits are not the end all-be all, but if we did vote them in, and did not like them, we could always vote them out. We are still a democracy. That is why I love this blog so much, and would rather post here than write a Letter to the NCTimes, U.T. or Coast News. When I learn exactly how to go about getting term limits on a ballot, I will post my personal e-mail and keep the comments off this blog. Until then, please keep cool. Even my husband thinks I'm crazy for wasting this much time on this. Perhaps he is right. But I'll keep on truckin, as my friend Jerry once said. I am truly sorry if I offended anyone. ReplyDeleteBOSTON – Police responding to a call about "two black males" breaking into a home near Harvard University ended up arresting the man who lives there — Henry Louis Gates Jr., the nation's pre-eminent black scholar.
Gates had forced his way through the front door because it was jammed, his lawyer said. Colleagues call the arrest last Thursday afternoon a clear case of racial profiling.
Cambridge police say they responded to the well-maintained two-story home after a woman reported seeing "two black males with backpacks on the porch," with one "wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry."
By the time police arrived, Gates was already inside. Police say he refused to come outside to speak with an officer, who told him he was investigating a report of a break-in.
"Why, because I'm a black man in America?" Gates said, according to a police report.
Gates — the director of Harvard's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research — initially refused to show the officer his identification, but then gave him a Harvard University ID card, according to police.

He was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after police said he "exhibited loud and tumultuous behavior." He was released later that day on his own recognizance. An arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 26. Police refused to comment on the arrest Monday.
Gates, 58, also refused to speak publicly Monday, referring calls to his attorney, fellow Harvard scholar Charles Ogletree.
Ogletree said Gates gave the officer his driver's license and Harvard identification, but became upset when the officer continued to question him.
"He was shocked to find himself being questioned and shocked that the conversation continued after he showed his identification," Ogletree said.
Ogletree declined to say whether he believed the incident was racially motivated, saying "I think the incident speaks for itself."
Some of Gates' African-American colleagues say the arrest is part of a pattern of racial profiling in Cambridge.
Allen Counter, who has taught neuroscience at Harvard for 25 years, said he was stopped on campus by two Harvard police officers in 2004 after being mistaken for a robbery suspect. They threatened to arrest him when he could not produce identification.
"We do not believe that this arrest would have happened if professor Gates was white," Counter said. "It really has been very unsettling for African-Americans throughout Harvard and throughout Cambridge that this happened."
Ogletree said Gates had returned from a trip to China on Thursday with a driver, when he found his front door jammed. He went through the back door into the home — which he leases from Harvard — shut off an alarm and worked with the driver to get the door open. The driver left, and Gates was on the phone with the property's management company when police first arrived.
Ogletree also disputed the claim that Gates, who was wearing slacks and a polo shirt and carrying a cane, was yelling at the officer.
"He has an infection that has impacted his breathing since he came back from China, so he's been in a very delicate physical state," Ogletree said.
Lawrence D. Bobo, the W.E.B Du Bois Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard, said he met with Gates at the police station and described his colleague as feeling humiliated and "emotionally devastated."
"It's just deeply disappointing but also a pointed reminder that there are serious problems that we have to wrestle with," he said.
Bobo said he hoped Cambridge police would drop the charges and called on the department to use the incident to review training and screening procedures it has in place.
The Middlesex district attorney's office said it could not do so until after Gates' arraignment. The woman who reported the apparent break-in did not return a message Monday.
Gates joined the Harvard faculty in 1991 and holds one of 20 prestigious "university professors" positions at the school. He also was host of "African American Lives," a PBS show about the family histories of prominent U.S. blacks, and was named by Time magazine as one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997.
