I agree. Move the Kook to Esconido or Valley Center. where ever the "artist" was from?

ReplyDeleteI usually enjoy how they dress up the kook but this one blew my mind. It's really good and exactly what should have been done.
ReplyDeleteWhen this latest version went up I felt embarrassed for what we have on permanent display. The kook can be fun but it's like having a losing sports team to mock, except this one's never going to get better.
Why could we not petition the art director, or the arts commission, to leave them both up? I think that they look great. Took pictures just the other day. BTW, Doty Tucker of DEMA is on the arts commisson. Perhaps DEMA could help or the Cardiff Chamber?
ReplyDeleteYou can all thank the older Hansen for the Kook. The statue was supposed to be that of a girl surfer( notice the girl in the newer version.) When old Hansen heard of this he walked out of the room swearing he would never support a girl surf statue.- hence a odd looking boy one might see surfing in Greece. Whoever did this great piece of art is also attempting to make a statement IMHO.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't the CIty leave both up and give the artist, whoever he or she is, credit? I think that they look great together. The new one needs a bit more stabilization, but other than that, I really like it. There is always more than one surfer in the water, so why not show it with 2 pieces of art. It does represent both men and women. Personally, I like the second one better. Everyone can still dress up the Kook, and the other we can be proud of. If this City does not want it, I bet Solana Beach would love it. Let me know if anyone wants me to call Jim Gilliam and ask about it. I would be happy to do it and get back to you with his answer. Also, e-mail Council if you like it. They are in charge of all the art projects anyway. I also think it's cool that Ji m is offering to at least move it, rather than just taking it down. Perhaps they are finally beginning to listen to citizens,as someone must have sent Jim's note to J.P. so he could post it.

Great first step for more public art! Now lets see if anyone has the time / funds / balls to follow through.

2)Attend numerous art commission meetings, city council meetings etc. There should be no opposition if things go as they did last time where people were too lazy to protest the current sculpture depicting a kid learning to surf.
3) Find a suitable location and negotiate with the city to allow a permanent piece.
It will be nice to have more public art to stimulate conversation and emotions. Thats what art does!
My bet is that no one will take this on. Its so much easier to deface what is there in the middle of the night. Sort of a sad comment on society.

ReplyDelete...But its fricken ugly!!! The dude is from Hemet for Christ sake!!!It cost us over $100,000!!!I don't care if its not easy,its bad art! Why, oh why can't we have a nice surf statue? Santa Cruz, Oceanside, HB and many others have something to be proud of and this is what we have to look at everyday? And worst of all, we have out-of-town monkeys like you telling us to appreciate it, give us good art (like the one they are taking down) and we'll appreciate it.

The committee that got to be on the statue project was hand selected by the Council at the time. If you notice the base, all the big donors are on it. To the best of my knowledge no real surfers were on the committee. I have heard that very few of them had ever surfed. I highly doubt if Marion Ross ever surfed. One of the reasons the citizens did not complain was that the picture shown at a council meeting of the sculpture was the head only, and it was a blurred black and white. If I didn't believe that the City was so ethical I might have thought they did it intentionally. No one from the general public ever saw the final version. That was reserved, I guess for the select blue ribbon committee. Not even sure the Council saw the end product. Most of the money was donated, not given by the City who only paid for the base. No one even knows for sure if it was ever cleared by the Coastal Commission. So, when you have a small group of donors, one of them being Hansen, you have a lot more pull and say so.
ReplyDeleteThere's plenty of room for more statues along the coast. If some one dislikes this one and wants their own, they should raise money and get the needed approvals.

I hope some one does. Cause the Kook is only a median for art to occur. The art comes from the outfits she adorns. Keep up the fresh art.

Someone will make a lot of money if they publish a calendar with all the different outfits the Kook has worn. And I'm not the first person to have this idea. Since it's public art there's no copyright on the image.
