It's Campaign Signs Time *sigh*

It's that time of year where our town gets blanketed in campaign signs. Here are the rules if you want to put some up:

ENCINITAS MUNICIPAL SIGN CODE PROVISIONS

2.16.040 Campaign Sign -- An unlimited number of political signs is allowed per parcel with the property owners permission. Signs may be displayed 30 days prior to the election and must be removed 72 hours after the election. The sign area shall not exceed 32 square feet for nonresidential zones or 32 square feet for nonresidential uses in residential zones; signs shall not exceed 8 feet in height. The sign area shall not exceed 3 square feet for residential uses in residential zones with a maximum height of 5 feet.

30.60.050(c) - Unless authorized by other provisions of this Chapter, it shall be unlawful for any person to post, erect or maintain any sign within the public right-of-way or upon public property.

30.60.050 (E.2) No sign shall be posted, erected or maintained so as to obstruct a clear view of the street from any intersecting street or access to public street such as driveways.

30.60.050 (H) - No sign shall be erected that would unreasonably obscure from any public view existing, nonconforming signs on adjacent properties.

30.60.050 (K) - No vehicle or trailer shall be parked that is utilized as a portable sign for the purpose of providing directional signage, additional on-site signage, or an attention getting device.

Complaints about illegally placed signs?

Call Code Enforcement 633-2685. Do not take them down yourself as that is a misdemeanor.

*blogger request--Please email me photos of the biggest most obnoxious campaign sign in your neighborhood!

  1. Does that means we should help and remove all signs that are planted in our medians?

  2. Yes... not only in the medians but also along the side of the road as well.

Pick them up and throw them out. The sooner the better.

They are major pollution and are disrespectful to the communities.

  3. I saw a HUGE Doug Long sign in Cardiff and above it, it had another sign that said Build The Park. Isn't he the Parks and Rec. Chairman? If he is, how can he say that. Does he represent the majority of the Commission. I thought the Commission wans't involved? Many questions, few answers.

  4. As a Parks and Rec. Commissioner, I can tell you that we were NOT involved in anything to do with the Hall Property Park, except the sidewalks and buffer zones. If Doug has a sign stating differently, he is speaking for himself only.

  5. Who re directed the park plan to, "maximize the sports fields"?
If it was not P & R department, who authorized this?
There was no record in any council meeting minutes that gave this direction.
Good point about Jerome and James being involved with the soccer five field folks. Should they be involved with the appeal?

  6. There are dozens of signs with "Stocks, Long and Brandenburg" hanging all over fences where the old Texaco gas station was on Leucadia Blvd, and on fences by the Chevron station on La Costa Ave. The group responsible for putting these up? The Sheriff's department!

Code enofrcement"s number is 633-2685. You will reach a machine, of course, but they will mail or fax a complaint form to you if you leave your name and address. You cannot do this anonymously. I just left them a message and will be filling out my form ASAP.

  8. Hey Dr L,
Did Park and Rec change the park plan that the community designed by adding the phrase,
’maximize sports fields', to guide the changing of the design of the park.

  9. I have only been on the Parks and Rec Commission since March of this year. The person to ask is Bob N, as he was chair 2 times and was on it for many years. I don't understand it myself.

  10. God Damn that first amendment!!! Freedom of speech should only be extended to the "good" citizens of Encinitas with whom I agree... The rights of other people are such an annoying inconvenience!!!

  11. Unlike the old days when the candidates themselves would drive around and put up their own signs, a private company is paid to put up most of the signs. These companies put aside funds to pay any fines for violations. There are also fines for unlawfully removing signs which are placed properly. I suggest you be prepared for a citation if you plan to indiscriminatly pull down signs, without first checking the legality of their placement.

  12. Who re directed the park plan to, "maximize the sports fields"?

The question was asked at the Planning Commission meeting. Where did that verbage come from, and when. The answer? The City Manager directed that this Objective be written this way. Who told him to do that?

  13. Yes, and Brandenburg's signs wrongly say Elect Judge Brandenburg.

That's deceptive and would be illegal on the ballot. Brandenburg was never a judge in Superior Court. He now holds a volunteer position as pro bono "inter tribal" judge, according to his campaign statements.

Don't support these guys who want this to be a police state. More laws, while often ignoring Constitutional liberties.

I'm voting for Nanninga, Sheffo and Collier.

    Vote out the incumbents!
