At extra cost to the taxpayer, the right turn lane was added. The hydrants remained unprotected. If they have to be exposed on the corners of the roundabout without protection, I'd put them on the southwest or northeast side of the roundabout, where they are not in the line of sight of the dominant traffic flow. Is there a reason they are where they are?

That hydrant is destroyed and that means there is an impact on the fire response to the immediate neighborhood. Does it also mean there are downstream hydrants that have become non-operational because of the accident?

ReplyDeleteFYI... my husband and I talked to the neighbor on the SE corner and he said the guy who lost control of the car was neither drunk nor diabetic, however he was on some medication and unfortunately that's what caused the accident. He had some friends following him who noticed his erratic driving when they were on Hwy 101. It was an accident, plain and simple, however, given the fact that so many people are taking meds, and roundabouts are new to our community, I expect this sort of thing will happen again. I'm just glad the guy didn't get kill himself or anyone else. The metal rod from the light fixture went straight through the hood of the car. Good thing the old timey light fixture is made of plastic, not glass!

ReplyDeleteGood post, Kevin. The fire hydrants should be relocated. It seems like very poor design to have them where they are, now, as you noted.
How many brain surgeons at the city thought it was a good idea to put the fire hydrant there. I doubt they will learn from this accident, but they will figure out a way to spend a million dollars to fix it.
ReplyDeletethe guy who was killed at the roundabout on Santa Fe also hit the light pole, made of concrete, that smashed onto the top of his car when it broke, which is whatk killed him. Why don't we have break away light poles? Another City design flaw that will lead to lawsuits. What are we paying these planners for, don't they have some sort of design safety training?

ReplyDeleteIt's always bothered me that when prescribed a medicine, I have to ask about drug interactions, effect of having alcohol with the medicine, side effects, driving, etc. It seems to me my doctor should be giving me an oral and written summary. The CYA un-readable (lots of text, no spacing, small, hard to read font) print out from the pharmacy not a great help.
I wonder if the person even knew they were impaired.
You think of ALL THE ENGINEERS and SO CALLED EXPERTS putting their little 2 cents into a multi million dollar project, and the idiots couldn't see the hydrants in plain striking distance as a potential disaster? What a crock! My wife and I have pointed that out since they were installed. We even called the City TWICE to request barriers be put up and they said they'd look into it.

I don't know about this particular person, but I hate it when someone generalizes, especially when they don't know that the word to, should have been spelled too.We usually learn that in graduate school, if not before. I am not the spelling police, however, get your facts right if you are going to make such statements with no proof.
Doc, I knew when I sent it that I had misused the word to and it should have been spelled as too, but I was too busy to resend it as I was providing health care for my pts.
