We rode from Basil by the Calypso down to Yogis, did a little sunday afternoon dancing at the Kraken, a little wine and appetizers up outside at the Beachhouse; and a nice cruise back home. Excellent driver, very convenient. Just wish they would post times at the stops, and perhaps that there were a few more stops along the way. A fantastic service everyone should be trying out and talking up!
I rode it on Sunday from Basil St to Moonlight Beach. It was fun and the driver is super cool. Needs more stops and needs to be recognizable as a community shuttle, I still think it looks like a plumber or work vehicle and not something for the public.
Nope, not a boondoggle but a community effort realized with partial sponsorship by the city. A pilot program to encourage cheap public transportation to occasional stops on our 6 miles of this edge of the continent every summer weekend. And thanks to Captain Keno (and folks who enjoy his excellent Fish n Chips) for supplying the veggy oil it runs on! 100% peanut oil.
It is a good thing. I hope it thrives. If it does it will be a positive addition to our community. If everyone takes advantage of it we could, in the future, have a vehicle that does indeed look more the part, although, the mercedes is very nice inside and very green.
I think the last loop happens around 9PM, but you have to be careful because it goes no further north than the train station on the last loop, I believe. Driver told us we could bring a beer onboard, no worries! How long do you think before that privilidge will be abused and taken away :/
There's only one bus? How 'bout the artist of the area come together and "decorate" the bus? It reminds me now of a senior citizens travel bus. Maybe kids could help, too. Everyone could donate a fee for a block to create something. Donate fee to?? An Encinitas patchwork. Just an idea...
The bus is leased on weekends only. The company uses it for other things during the week so the images cannot be permanent on the bus. But neither of those other uses involve plumbers or pop-sicles.
5:44 Regardless of what the bus itself cost the company that owns it, the city did not buy the bus to test this pilot program, nor spend 100k doing so. It is leased on the weekends and even then only partially paid for by the city. Periodically, the Cultural Tourism Committee is alloted money for new projects. I remember 10 years ago the under Lou Aspel the Culutral Tourism Committee was allotted $10,000 for making a tourism brochure. (a bit pricey for what we ended up with in my opinion) Today for the same money on the city's part we have 5000 local brochures/maps and the bus route for the summer. But it's value and viablility will be assesed in September when the run is over. A lot of people wanted this local bus for many years. Thanks to Teresa Barth for her focus in achieving it this summer. Other entities sponsoring the bus are: Fares collected by the bus; The County Board of Supervisors (from TOT funds that have to be distributed locally); 11 Bus Stop sponsors and a few dozen local businesses. You can pick up a free map on the bus itself or at the coastal mainstreet associations. Participating businesses carry them as well.
If you have better ideas for the cultural and economic aspects of Encinitas, you can get up at 8am and share them for the CTC meetings at city hall once a month. No charge.

A boondoggle on wheels, mostly subsidized by the Encinitas Taxpayer. My opinion would change if the coastal businesses were paying for this vehicle.
