Rise of the Ron Paul Republicans
By: CRAIG L. COMBS - Commentary
Recently I was honored with the opportunity of speaking to the California Federation of Republican Women on behalf of presidential candidate Ron Paul. Surely, I thought, these ladies would understand the one issue that is driving so many young people to the GOP, the one issue that gets the loudest cheers from the audience wherever Ron Paul speaks, the one issue that no other presidential candidate is discussing except for Ron Paul.
No, I am not talking about Dr. Paul's call for an immediate withdrawal of our troops from the Middle East (I knew that these gentlewomen do not necessarily agree with his foreign policy of peace). I am talking about his vow to abolish the Federal Reserve Bank.
As it turned out, I was wrong. In fact, not one person in the audience could tell me who owned the bank that creates the currency we use every day. These ladies, who certainly should know better at this late stage of their lives, were shocked when I told them what is common knowledge to the young people joining the Ron Paul Revolution: The Federal Reserve Bank is a privately owned corporation.
The Federal Reserve, an unelected and unaccountable private organization, pumps more dollars into the economy whenever it chooses. Basic economics tells us that the more there is of a commodity, the less valuable it becomes. This is also true of money: The dollar is worth 4 cents of what it was when the Federal Reserve was created in 1913. Every day, every dollar we hold is devalued. We pay an "inflation tax" without even realizing it because we are forced by a falling dollar to pay more for goods and services. Of all the presidential candidates, Republican or Democrat, only Dr. Paul is addressing this profound flaw in our economic system.
In 1802, then-President Thomas Jefferson wrote the following in a letter to Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin:
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."
Thomas Jefferson's words are proving prophetic indeed. Today, the economic bubbles created by the Fed have resulted in massive foreclosures across the country while China and Saudi Arabia, sitting on trillion-dollar sovereign wealth funds, snap up major interests in marquee American companies. America, once the world's greatest creditor nation, is now its greatest debtor.
Jefferson also stated in his letter to Secretary Gallatin that "the issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." Ron Paul, as well as the tens of thousands flocking to his campaign, is saying precisely the same thing: By legalizing competing currencies we can end the Federal Reserve's monopoly on our money supply and begin to restore value to the dollar.
Craig Combs lives in Encinitas.
According to Wikopedia the Federal Reserve Bank is a quasi governmental and private bank. The president of the Federal Reserve Bank is picked by the president of the United States. Therefore, it is not totally an independent agency as the author has stated. Also, who is to say that an immediate withdrawal from Iraq is not going to end up killing thounsands more innocent Iraqi citizens? I never thought we should have gone into Iraq, but a complete and total withdrawal now will create even more bloodshed. Another Vietnam, for those old enough to remember. We have helped in destroying that country, so to leave it entirely on its own at this juncture seems barbaric, at least to me. A gradual withdrawal, with a timetable, is the way to go, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to Moonlight Beach, I have asked on countless occasions for their to be an independent audit of the City's books. No Councilperson has taken the lead on this. Therefore, Moonlight, Beacons' etc. suffer. Novemeber should be interesting, both nationally and locally.
I'M DOWN WIH THE PAUL DUDE ON FORIEGN POLICY AND THE FED. HIS HARDCORE LIBERTARIAN B.S. IS JUST THAT,B.S. SHOW ME ANY SOCIETY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD WHERE THIS PHILOSOPHY WAS VIABLE. OH YAE,CHINA ,ABOUT 300 YRS AGO. YOU HAD THE BIG BOSSES,SURROUNDED BY THEIR SLAVES AND CONCUBINES. UNBRIDLED CAPITALISM LEADS TO MONOPOLIES AND FEUDALISM.YOU EX-BUSH LOVIN CHRISTO-FASCISTS(I'M CALLIN YOU OUT J.P.) ARE GRASPING AT STRAWS. I WOULD AGREE THAT MR. PAUL HAS BEEN CONSISTANT AND PRINCIPLED THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER,WHICH GIVES HIM LEGIT CREDS,HOWEVER I FEEL THAT PEOPLE LIKE J.P. HAVE BEEN BRAIN WASHED INTO THINKING THAT 'LIBERALS' ARE EVIL. I NOTICED THIS TREND AS FAR BACK AS THE EARLY SEVENTIES.MANY OF MY SURFIN' BRETHREN TOOK DRUGS THEY COULD'NT HANDLE AND TURNED TO THE BIG DADDY IN THE SKY TO WIPE THEIR LIGHTWIEGHT ASSES AND PAT THEM ON THE HEAD. ReplyDeletedr.lorri is right about the dangers of an abrupt withdrawal. No people in their right mind would ever join us against a tyrannical government again. We Americans do not fight to gain land but to secure free trade by keeping natural resources out of the control of the bad guys that can extort you. We also seek to defend the libirties of free people or those that seek freedom. That's not to say that our fought for freedom that took us 200 plus years to establish is exactly what would suit them best. We are still a work in progress.
ReplyDeleteRon Paul has no f in chance.
ReplyDeletehe is a side show a footnote.
too bad the rest of the typical sucky politicians from both parties suck worse and one of them will win.
lol
ReplyDeleteThis is such a silly, reactive candidacy it is difficult to take it seriously. What kind of constitution have these Paul people read? The Constitution of the United States does not allow for a pResident to accomplish any of his avowed goals. It is tiresome, but I understand completely the kind of frustration that would make this sound like a good idea in the moment. It is also so different the the other GOP old white men. Why not just vote Democratic ticket and be done with it?
ReplyDeleteEX-BUSH LOVIN CHRISTO-FASCISTS
ReplyDeletelol, yeah that's me in a nutshell!
Well Dr. Lorri, you may have to dig a little deeper than Wikipedia to understand the truth. But hey, even Wikipedia will tell you that the Federal Reserve Banks are privately owned.
ReplyDeleteAnd to the anonymous coward who asks, "What kind of constitution have these Paul people read?" I answer "The Constitution of the United States of America." You should read it sometime. When you do, please report back to me as to which section allows a private corporation to hold a monopoly on our currency. Also, you may want to pay careful attention to Article 1, Section 8 which states that "Congress shall have power to ... declare War." You'll notice it doesn't say anything about going to war under the mandate of a global governmental body such as, say a UN Resolution.
The undeclared war in Iraq is unconstitutional and a grave capitulation of American sovereignty to a global government. (Perhaps this is also the reason why Ron Paul has received more donations from active and retired military personnel than any other candidate, Republican or Democrat).
And whether you like the war or not, the reality is that we cannot afford it. "We are in the position of having to borrow from Europe to defend Europe, of having to borrow from China and Japan to defend Chinese and Japanese access to Gulf oil, and of having to borrow from Arab emirs, sultans and monarchs to make Iraq safe for democracy.”
This is the threat to our national security that only one in a hundred can perceive. While we have secured for ourselves and our posterity a nine trillion dollar debt, other countries such as China, Russia and Saudi Arabia, have trillion dollar surpluses! China, holding hundreds of billions of our dollars in reserves, could bring us to our economic knees should they choose to dump their dollars on the market. Most people claim that China would never do this because they would only hurt themselves. These people are right, for now. But the time will soon come when China’s global export base is broad enough that they will have the power to destroy our dollar should we challenge them on any of their policies, foreign or domestic. The Arab states, with China as their new best customer, will be in a similar position.
Hey Craig. Wanna run for Encinitas City Council?
ReplyDeleteI heard that Kennedy ordered the Treasury to start issuing money, backed by precious metals. He was killed shortly after that. Now all we have is Federal Reserve money that is backed by nothing.
ReplyDeleteAll this "economic stimulus" with lower interest rates is a hidden diffuse tax on all of us. It means we all give up a little of our money to help bail out all the big investors who bought mortgage products no one understands and weren't worth anything.
No matter what you think of Ron Paul, thank Craig for writing about the single most important thing destroying the nation. Everything else you care about depends on the economic system working, and working fairly. Ask your candidate of choice to take on Ron Paul's courage or tell them you are going to support Ron Paul.
If you don't understand the truth in our constitution and the message Thomas Jefferson, Ron Paul and now many of us like Craig Combs, you are truly ignorant and you’re lucky to live in such a government enabling complacent country as the USA.
ReplyDeleteAs Craig and Ron Paul stated, we cannot afford to police, war, and occupy the entire world. Nor should we.
As far as Dr. Lorri's point about pulling out. The bottom line is when ever we pull out of Iraq, there will be a civil war. We shouldn’t be there in the first place. They will either end up under another dictator/king or a democracy. Judging by the development of the rest of the Arabic nations, I am guessing dictatorship for at least the next 200 years.
So Doctor Lorri- Do we stay in Iraq illegally without a true doctrine of war, bankrupt our country so all our debtors such as China and Saudis can own us, and kill 10,000+ US soldiers for the next 10 years or 200 years. The only end difference will be how many dead American soldiers and how quickly our financial system collapses.
As for Vietman- It sound like to me that vietman is prospering today. We can not and should not impose our views with Guns, we should do it by example. Our guns are for protecting ourselves.
Saying he has no chance is stupid. He consistently beats Rudy guliwhoever...., and he will be in the top 3 GOP going into the GOP convention. I stay if you vote for anyone else, our country stands no chance.
McSain, Clinton, and Rominy, and Oboma are all the same and more of the same. If they get in office, the USA is toast in 15 to 30 years.
If someone other than Ron Paul wins the presidency, start learning Chinese and reading about communism- Cause you’re going to need it.
PS- People like Craig Combs are true heroes in my eyes for trying to save our great republic.
If you haven't read about Ron Paul’s positions, educate yourself, so at least you can honestly say what you like and dislike about his platform. And for all of you that think you know why you would not vote for Ron Paul. Post your point and we will explain some truths and you can judge for yourself.
As long as there is oil in Iraq, the US will not pull its "troops." We will simply declare the "war" over and that we "won" and institutionalize an American owned police force which will be manned by Blackwater employees who will then hold America hostage by demanding more and more money to operate. Then, once America has been siphoned to the point where even an idiot could agree we should get the hell out, the politicians will divest us of any ownership interest in the police force by "turning" it over to the native Sunni population while funneling money under the table to ensure the future established facist state of Iraq continues to serve our demands. Opportunistic beheadings of the infidel Blackwater leaders will occur and be blamed on "terrorists." This is not a "war" it is a planned demoralization and eradication of an entire civilization seen as a threat to western greed by our very well educated Leader and his money grubbing cronies. Where was the US when Bosnia was being raped and pillaged? Alas, the Bosnians had the great misfortune to live in an area of the world with so little natural resources that they didn't deserve a "democracy."
ReplyDeleteCraig, you are very pretty, but I can't see the color of your tie. Please post a full body picture as I only decide my vote based upon bullshit factors.
ReplyDeleteCraig may be pretty, but the more important issue is his message about liberty and how to save our country.
ReplyDeleteLearn about Ron Paul and help save our country.
Like all politicos he says I will do this as Pres. I will do that as Pres. Congress makes the laws, he can't get rid of the IRS. He can't stop amnesty etc. if he follows the constitution as it was written.
ReplyDeleteWe need to change the lawmakers of this land, and the Pres.
What about all the accusations of racist comments and policies in his past, any truth to that? I don't know just asking?
I have never seen a person of color at any of his rallies and or internet speeches???
You want to see a real racist on television? Bill Clinton is about to give a speech.
ReplyDeleteIf the war in Iraq is so wrong then how come so many marines and soldiers are anxious to go back and finish the job. AWOLS are not rampant like during the Viet Nam war. Craig you say that the vets are backing Paul but that doesn't explain all of the reinlistments since the conflict began. The ones that don't reinlist probably had too long of a deployment which is understandable. Paul is against matching social security numbers to names. That gives a pass to illegal aliens continueing to cheat the system.
ReplyDeleteThere has not been a declared WAR since WORLD WAR 2! Every other situation like Iraq has been a "conflict" ie: Korea; Vietnam; Desert Storm; Iraq. Therefore the President can put our troops in harms way without the consent of Congress. Now, Congress could stop allocating money to these "conflicts" but FEAR is always instilled in the population, so this doesn't happen. With Vietnam (the first I remember, it was Communism). With Desert Storm it was OIL and with Iraq, it was Saddam Hussein and his "weapons of mass destruction". Of course the irony of this one is that WE put Saddam in power in the first place.Of course, Bob is right, about the oil as well. And, sorry author, you are still wrong about the Federal Reserve Banking system, but I will lt it go.
ReplyDeleteNobody takes Wikipedia seriously.
ReplyDeleteNo body except a dog shrink
ReplyDeleteThis particular "dog shrink" at least knows her history and economics. And to top it off, I post under my own name. There is no discussion with people who are not too well versed on the issues. That is why I used Wikopedia. It is "dumbed down" enough for anonymous bloggers.
ReplyDeleteI took my dog to the shrink but he wouldn't get on the couch.
ReplyDeleteThere was a draft in effect for the Vietnam War. Today's servicemen are "volunteers."
ReplyDeleteThat explains the difference in AWOL's.
I like Ron Paul, but think Obama has a better chance. We need change; and yes, change is in the air.
Dr. Lorri sez, "And, sorry author, you are still wrong about the Federal Reserve Banking system, but I will lt it go."
ReplyDeleteWow, you are just going to "let it go" huh? I have some suggested reading for you:
"The Creature from Jekyll Island" by G. Edward Griffin is probably the best start for a very thorough, impeccably researched history of the Federal Reserve.
Another, perhaps more immediately relevant place to start would be "Crash Proof: How to Profit From the Coming Economic Collapse" by Peter Schiff.
However, despite your claim that you know your history and economics, it seems you are in need of information that is much more basic. I strongly suggest you start here:
http://www.mises.org/money.asp
Hey, it's a free book and you will definitely learn something.
I also doubt your understanding of history and economics is very deep given your scepticism over the fact that the Federal Reserve Banks are privately owned. Did you read Jefferson's quote in my article? Did you think he was just pulling that out of his ass? Or was this in response to his fight against the attempts to do this very same thing with the First Bank of the United States (the same battle fought by Andrew Jackson against the Second Bank of the United States).
Also, I suggest you take a look around and see what is happening to those countries in the Gulf as well as China who have pegged their currencies to the dollar. THese countries are experiencing massive inflation to point where it is causing civil unrest. They are going to either have to strengthen their currencies against the dollar or unpeg them; either way, we are fucked because in the end we will have bucketloads of little paper tickets called "Federal Reserve Notes" backed by nothing.
Even if I was wrong about the fact that the Federal Reserve Banks are privately owned (which I am not) why should the very basis of our economy be so wrapped in mystery and obfuscation? It should not.
A few other terms for you to Google: "Petrodollar" and "Bretton Woods."
Wow, there is so much to school you on, but I just don't have the time...
PS - I forgot:
ReplyDeleteRON PAUL BALBOA PARK RALLY AND MARCH
When:
Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 12:00pm
Where
Balboa Park
1549 El Prado
San Diego , CA 92101
Over 500 people have committed. It's going to be great!
By golly, we've read the same books. How about that? The question is "who understands it better, you or me."? I was going to let it go out of respect for you. And I am still going to do that. However, whatever you may think of me, I suggest you re-read some of the same books again before giving anymore talks. I think it is disrespectful, and deceitful, to give a speech to people and not give them the whole truth. That is kind of what the CIA did to Bush. It ended up with the President sending troops into Iraq and Congress voting the money for the troops, only to find that these weapons did not really exist. And trillions of dollars later we have a possible recession. IMHO, that is what you did to the Republican women you spoke to.You did not give them the whole truth. I am sure you will have a response, however, I am a busy person so this will be my last post on this issue. I'll be happy to let you have te last word. People know how to read and, if they are interested, they can read the information out there for themselves.
ReplyDeleteMy god, this blog is full of nuts like Craig and dr Lorrie. You folks are so full of yourselves in this little insignificant poop hole called Leucadia or more aptly called Looncadia. Ron Paul doesn't have a snowball chance in hell of winning. Who gives a rats ass about this stupid little dirt throwing match between two so called adults and the federal reserve. Oh no I better go I think I hear chain saws near our canopy of eucalyptus trees. I hope I make it in time,if not I'll see tiu at the candle light vigil.
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard, 2:27, you'll be back.
ReplyDeleteDon't look now. Ron Paul got 3% in Florida. The rEVOLution is gaining momentum. He'll get 6% in California. woopdeedooo
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the hell your so happy about. I guess you want the USA to go down in flames quickly.
ReplyDeleteLets see. He Beat Rudy overall. and Rudy knows he can't win so he supports a Democrat in GOP colors- McSain.
Ron Paul took second in Nevada and is gaining major momentum even without the press.
Florida is full of old baby boomers that still believe the USA has no problems as long as they get their 2 martinis at cocktail hour and wine with dinner.
Learn about Ron Paul, or you better learn how to survive when our financial system collapses.
I Put a Ross Perot bumper sticker on my car.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of that time.
Ron Paul/Ross Perot?
I voted for ross Perot and if more did, we wouldn't be in this shitty condition.
ReplyDeleteNow its time to vote for Ron Paul. He is better then Ross Perot.
The weird part is, everytime I've ever told someone I voted for Ross Perot they tell me "I did too". Did anyone not? (My own personal blog survey in progress at JP's expense...)
ReplyDeleteRon Paul -- Ron Paul -- RoPaul -- Rupaul -- RuePaul
ReplyDeleteIsn't there one of those Vanity Fair Morphed/Separated At Birth expose's on this rumor?
What is a RuePaul....
ReplyDeleteI do know what Ron Paul values and platform is .... and they are the right ones to correct the direction of this complacent country.
Rue Pauls platforms are size 13
ReplyDeleteRon Pauls platform is ending the war; lowering taxes; eliminating IRS and the Federal Reserve bank and generally promoting equality. Don't think he owns platforms but have seen Giuliani all dolled up.
ReplyDelete
