  5. McDonalds is my first choice.

Can't they combine a Subway with a Starbucks as they did in La Jolla?

  6. Although I don't think Starbucks coffee is good and/or worth the high prices, if they go through the process and build a decent looking place then thats the way it goes. I just wish they would sell beer at that location so I didn't have to ride all the way down the hill through the roundabouts on mi bicicleta.

  7. I think Hooters would be better.

  8. Who doesn't like good coffee? Historically though, corporate America veers from HWY 101 in Leucadia being only one side of the street and serving only a tenth of the traffic than what’s on El Camino Real for example. Kind of a blessing. But kind of ironic at the same time right across the tracks from 101, we have the busiest 7-11 in the Universe. Really.

I can't speak for the neighborhood by the freeway, but I know in the past there's been opposition to just another mall going in there.

If the architecture is appropriate and doesn't look like Anywhere USA, I don't have a problem with it.
In the movie "The adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" done in the year 2000, there was a lot of traveling from town to town across America. The writer took a jab a suburbia showing that every town in the movie is absolutely indistinguishable from any other, prompting Bullwinkle to say "Hey, this looks like the last town we left." No one would get that in 1959. So in the sense of becoming like everywhere else I don't like change. But in my opinion there are good exceptions if they're creative enough for Leucadia. More milk-toast architecture we don't need.

  9. Hey maybe we could have a statue of Juan Valdez or Mrs.Olsen in front of the new Starbucks.

  10. We need an E Street Cafe here in Leucadia!!! Bob?? Please!

  11. Another thing that is coming to Leucadia is the removal of MORE trees along the highway starting tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan 15. Courtesy of NCTD.

Hmmmm... I thought we had a city council member on the board of NCTD who was supposed to represent us and keep our community character intact.

  12. I just got a call from Maggie Hoolihan alerting Leucadia that TOMORROW NCTD is removing 14 trees in north Leucadia.
She believes, as most do, that our trees are part of our heritage. She is mad. L101 requested a review of the plans to remove four trees that were dead or dying and to hold off any action. We requested to have an arborist help determine if they needed to be removed. We were told that the decision was to be made by their tree trimmers in a letter. There are some trees that are dead and should be removed. I do not believe that there are FOURTEEN dead trees.

Nobody was not told about this time frame of TOMORROW. I don't know what can be done. Contact our representative on the NCTD board.

Make phone calls. Send emails. Chain yourselves to a tree. Take pictures.
    Call the news organizations.

    This is outrageous.

  13. I have a theory that Starbucks was originally designed for cigarette smokers. Why else would it be so scorched and bitter?

I mean, it's just terrible. It's no wonder they have so many sugary coffee drinks to disguise the gawd awful horribleness of that craptacular brew.

As for the company, you have to hand it to them, they are very clever. The stores are pretty nice, generic, but could be worse. Tacky chains like McDonalds trash the senses and are an insult to the dietary needs of the human race.

I mean, how the hell does McDonalds screw up an Egg McMuffin? Ever make one at home? They are delicious. But somehow the ones at McDonalds taste like Osama Bin Laden's butthole. How the hell do you screw up food that bad and make billions of dollars???

I myself have never liked chain stores, I like to check out different mom&pop coffee shops. But people like Starbucks because they are all the same. People have their favorite little $4 coffee and can get it wherever they go.

One nice thing about Starbucks, a young person can make pretty decent money there as opposed to a min. wage McDonalds. I know a twentysomething Leucadian that made $20 an hour (including tips) at an Encinitas Starbucks.

Also, the line moves pretty fast. The Starbucks baristas work hard and crank out the coffees. Remember how agonizing it was to wait in line at Miracles in Cardiff for 20 minutes because the hipster behind the counter was having some lame conversation with his bro bro and ignoring all the customers?

When I'm out of coffee at home and need a fix I drive south on the 101 (past Pannikan) and go to E Street Cafe, Honey's or Surf Dog's Java Hut and seek out smooth organic blends.

  15. How can the Council not know. Sounds a little suspicious to me. Remember, Maggie is also up for reelection. She may be attempting to quiet the forces of rage by distancing herself from this unnecessary chooping down of trees.

  16. I know Maggie and Maggie is a true blue tree hugger. How can you question that considering half of her wardrobe is made with natural tie dye. If you love trees, you have to love Maggie.

    ReplyDelete
  17. JP- why do you drive past the Pannikan? Please explain?

    ReplyDelete
  18. FYI
E Street has an eye out for a North Leucadia location with parking.

  19. Pannikan: Cool building that contains hateful overworked employees that scowl at you. Where is the love?

  20. bob- Are you talking about F street?

  21. Another Starbucks on another corner. We are well on the way to being Orange County South. I don't patronize Starbucks as the coffee isn't great for the price they charge and the psuedo multi-language menu item names are so pretentious. I'd rather give my money to 7-Eleven, which is not a yuppy franchise but owned and staffed by real working people with real names for real products. Besides, Starbucks doesn't serve Slurpees.

  22. No. If E Street, opened a second location in Leucadia it would be North of Leucadia Blvd.

  23. Oh Boy, when is Walmart coming?

  25. J.P. 7:26 My brother worked at a circumcism ward and made $25.00 an hour plus tips.

  26. I live close to the proposed Starbucks location. If Starbucks comes in, I will continue to walk down to the Pannikin, illegally crossing the RR tracks in the process. It's the Leucadian way of life, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. And Pannikin people hardly ever ever scowl at me.

  27. I wish we could have some constructive dialog with a city official with a news camera running to address the tree issue. Instead of calling Fred ,maybe Maggie should put her face on t.v. Call Marti Emerald,Turko,or set up a protest to bring public awareness to the forefront. Lorri,J.P.,Fred, Teresa, Maggie where are you? I'm a former native born in Encinitas and have no influence but I follow the blog from time to time.

  28. JP Can we put a sign on the fence next to the Ron Paul sign saying.

"There will be a Starbucks here if you don't attend the 1/23 meeting"

I think that we should have a more toursit and local serving establishment, not a freeway drive thru.

    Thanks.

  29. JP said --I mean, how the hell does McDonalds screw up an Egg McMuffin? Ever make one at home? They are delicious. But somehow the ones at McDonalds taste like Osama Bin Laden's butthole. How the hell do you screw up food that bad and make billions of dollars???
    I say --
I wouldn't know how Osama's butt hole tastes so I'll just have to take JP's word for it.

But seriously, Starbucks is one of the very few places that serves coffee with any flavor at all. Most of the stuff that passes for "coffee" has little, if any, flavor. Starbucks is strong coffee and I like it.
I don't care if there's one on every corner if it's good. If it's bad, I don't care how rare it may be.
Kind of like the Toyota Camry (good) and the Edsel (bad) The Edsel is a rare car, but it sucks.
McDonald's is common and also sucks, unless you don't mind clogged arteries...

  30. or the pannikin could just serve better coffee
