Say goodbye to many of the giant trees along the L101 corridor because tomorrow (Tues, Jan 15) they are getting chopped down by evil bureaucratic pinheads, NCTD.

Leucadia Blog: NCTD to Cut Down Trees on L101
Hoping it's just a rumor that 14 of our trees will get the axe tomorrow, and it's just the 7 that NCTD carefully informed us about months ago. - the ones with an orange X.
ReplyDeleteI just got a call from Maggie Hoolihan alerting Leucadia that TOMORROW NCTD is removing 14 trees in north Leucadia.
ReplyDeleteShe believes, as most do, that our trees are part of our heritage. She is mad. L101 requested a review of the plans to remove four trees that were dead or dying and to hold off any action. We requested to have an arborist help determine if they needed to be removed. We were told that the decision was to be made by their tree trimmers in a letter. There are some trees that are dead and should be removed. I do not believe that there are FOURTEEN dead trees.
Nobody was told about this time frame of TOMORROW. I don't know what can be done. Contact our representative on the NCTD board.
Make phone calls. Send emails. Chain yourselves to a tree. Take pictures.
Call the news organizations.
I repeat from the last post. How could the Council NOT know about this? Remember Maggie is up for reelection and may be attempting to distance herself from the forces of rage. I don't believe that every one of them did not know. Just doesn't make sense. And, if they don't really know, they should all be booted out IMHO.
ReplyDeleteSomebody was told or else Maggie woudn't know. If she is so mad, why doesn't she do something? I agree with the previous poster. It stinks. And who is this anonymous person that Maggie called. Why is he or she the only one called? Lot's of questions. Where are the answers?
ReplyDeleteHow does Fred know? And why didn't he tell us a little sooner. Kind of hard to do much now.
ReplyDeleteWhere are Stocked and Sabined when they are needed?
ReplyDeleteLets go have the roadside park bum pee on the people with chainsaws.
ReplyDeleteI'll buy him a chase of Ol Milwakee.
Fear not! If history is any indication, the venerable old trees are in no actual danger. Remember that lately it's only new-ish tress that get cut down. Who wants to bet that they'll get confused and cut down the newly-planted trees in the roadside park by mistake. If they use those guys from last time, they might even cut down a utility pole by mistake. "Uhhhh... huh huh... uhhhhh... it's made of wood... duhhh... and it looked like a dead tree. I sorry."
ReplyDeleteScene: Surveillance van parked on 101.
ReplyDeleteStocked: Hey, hey, hey. Glennboy, its reckonin time for them thar bird roosts.
Sabined: Jerryboy, you so right. Ain't nothin more irritatin than a boil but bird poop on my windshield.
Stocked: Glennboy, you so right. Now you did put all them X's so's everyone can see em.
Glennboy: Damn right I did, and I even puts some O's so's it don't look like them trees fixed the ante.
Stocked: Glennboy, you one big kuncklenose!!! Ain't no ticky tacky toes goin on here. This heres as serious as a heartattack -- I needs them water hoggin eyesores eliminated pronto so I'se can get my NCTD and SDWD buddies somes relief from havin to come up wit real solutions -- they been plannin on the official type response.
Glennboy: Nows ya tells me -- Operation "Oops" right? Weel, hell, I still gots some orange spray paint -- jess give me a minute.
Glennboy exits van and starts spraying X's on telephone poles and O's on street sign posts. Jerryboy munches tater tots. Hordes of chainsaw wheelin Blackwater hired units march in. Fadeout...
Re/ 8:18
ReplyDeleteMaggie told me, thats how I knew. She'd already spoken to Morgan but I beat him to the blog by 6 minutes.
JP did a good jop of alerting everyone to the 7 trees with orange X's (complete with pictures). BUT twice as many today out of the blue with no warning at all? Intolerable. I should have asked Maggie who told her that. Hope they're wrong.
Leucadia- Home to the dustiest, deadliest, loudest, and ugliest train in the world.
ReplyDeleteWhat’s next? Are they going to tear down all the single story buildings and build strip malls, and commercial office Carlsbad style?
Maybe we could just wipe out all the retail and widen HW101 to 3 lanes in each direction and encourage even more people to cut through our town?
Boy O Boy- The HW101 area of Leucadia is going to shit quickly especially over the last 10 years? Who is responsible for its well being? Is it the City Staff?
Maybe we citizens should form a group to protect our one sliver of retail and downtown within Leucadia or have we just given up?

ReplyDelete"Maybe we citizens should form a group to protect our one sliver of retail and downtown within Leucadia or have we just given up?"
Get involved with L101 Mainstreet Association.
That is what they are doing. Not giving up.
All I see is trees being cut down left and right, more trains, crappier road conditions, much more traffic, and former businesses with now boards nailed to the windows. I'd say blight has taken its grips in Leucadia.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers in the medians were a nice touch over the last few years. Other than that and a few new sidewalks, I don't see any improvement. Only bad things seem to be happening to Leucadia. Will things ever change?
Let me see if I have this correct. Jerome is on the NCDT.They unilaterally, without the Council knowing, decided to take down a number of trees that really don't need to be destroyed. Maggie finds out the day before and calls Fred. And that's the end of the story? On the face of it, it looks a little suspicious. If this is the best the City can do, I think I will stick to reading Stocked and Sabined. At least whoever is posting that adds some humor. The rest is bullshit!
ReplyDeleteP.S. L101: If you didn't know, I wouldn't join your organization either. You don't ave much clout at City Hall.
ReplyDeleteanon 7:29,
ReplyDeleteThe trees are property of NCTD. They probably didn't have to even give any notice to the city cut down their trees.
What authority do you think the city has that they MUST HAVE KNOW?
The only one in this town that has something to answer for is JEROME STOCKS. He is on the board of the NCTD and he likes to say he has all this power over the NCTD and SANDAG. If he didn't know he clearly is full of shit and not doing his duty to represent the city of encinitas.
Some, not all, of those trees do not need to be cut down.
Lets not forget that Jerome wanted Leucadia to be blighted so his developer friends could rape Leucadia with a redevelopment district.
so who is are representative at North County Transit District, yep jerrrrooooome STOCKS. so he is directly responsible for cutting down those trees
ReplyDeleteDid anyone call or email Jerome yet?
ReplyDeleteOnly Jerome can help us now!
ReplyDeleteJerome is part of the group of people in charge of NCTD. He is responsible.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the trees are going to be cut down with saws that were sharpened at Dalagers old shop?
ReplyDeleteDouble tracking. That is next.
ReplyDeleteDouble Tracking and McDonalds. Boy Leucadia Mainstreet is looking good! Good Job City!
ReplyDeleteIf NCTD is working in the city's public right of way, did NCTD get a permit from the city?
ReplyDeleteI'm pissed! I bought a house right next to HW101 and the Realtor told me HW101 was going to get better. So far, it looks worse and prices are dropping. Thanks City.
ReplyDeleteJust passed the work crews along 101, the blighting of Leucadia has resumed. Thanks Jerome, thanks NCTD.
ReplyDeleteHey -
ReplyDeleteI just drove by...
Did NCTD survey the right-of-way line that defines NCTD property from City property?
I didn't see it!!!
How do we know that they are not cutting down our trees?
Does the City staff know for sure where the property line is?
I would like to see the property line marked out in the area where the trees are being cut.
I bet half of the trees are on City property and will be cut down "Accidently" again.
Don't worry they are going to replace the trees with a nice high barber wired topped fence. It will be a nice black or orange color.
ReplyDeleteThose trees are ugly and dangerous. If they replace them, a big if, use a different type of tree. Perhaps a Torrey Pine since a lot of leucadias think they are cool.
Double tracking is coming. Get use to it. Don't expect Cardiffians to support you in stopping it because you didn't support them.
I will once more pose the question. If Maggie knew the day before, then other council memebrs must have known as well. Or is she, besides Jerome, the only one that has the inside information. So she calls Fred. What was that about? Has Fred got the power to do anything? She knows J.P. has a blog so she could have posted it to al of us. Why just a couple of people? I am on Teresa Barth's mailing list and I can tell you she didn't say anything about it. As much as I hate to say it, the last poster has a point. Where were Leucadians when double tracking happened in Cardiff? Maybe we are not as cooperative with one another as Dr. Lori has stated that we are. And, where is Dr. Lori anyway. Why isn't she saying anything. We all know she wants to run for Council. She is being extremely quiet on this. Did she know?
ReplyDeleteThank Christy Guerrin, Jerome, James Bond, Maggie and Dan Dalager for ushering in a city manager without the usual procedure. Remember that "saved" the city 70 grand. Thank Jerome for his bad acting and feigned interest to preserve our community character and his stellar job on NCTD. Thank city staff for treating the citizens of Encinitas and Leucadia like children, and the reluctant effort they display when dealing with groups like Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Ass. and The Leucadia Town Council. Thank the NCTD for their arrogance.
ReplyDeleteYes, thank them all, then remember this when you go to the voting polls in November. Remember the disinterest and virtual contempt by our city council when it comes to Leucadia.
I don't usually point fingers, but this is job done poorly by Jerome Stocks.
8:58 has a good point that should be looked into immediately.
ReplyDeleteIf the railroad right of way is 50' from the center of the tracks, I think most trees bordering the East side of 101 could be on our property. We need to be clear about WHERE that line is for the entire lenght of 101. The fact that no property line is designated is disturbing and should be looked into by a surveyor. Not me. If they're taking down our trees they should be stopped. At least there should be ample mitigation for ones they do cut down.
As someone who's worked with NCTD promoting our stretch of the 101 in North County (designing the Woodie Bus wraps) I'm appauled if they remove any of our healthy trees destroying the character of our historic highway.
A sad day for progress. Tree hugging is not my bag, but I can remember Leucadia always by the trees along 101 highway when I was a kid .We used to surf down here during WW2 and the trees were a sign that we were approaching surf.Velzy used to say a "bitchin" place Leucadia. Aloha.
ReplyDeleteCUT THEM DOWN.
ReplyDeleteIt's stupid to plant Eucalyptus Trees in the first place. They are the first things to fall and break during a storm.
The city is potentially saving us $$$ by cutting them down to avoid them falling on a little kid or you!
The 101 will be redone in the next 5ish years with roundabouts and maybe moving it closer to the tracks to allow for more parking.
Obviously, you dipshits here have no power to stop the movement and gentrification that is happening to Leucadia - so stop whining.
previous poster...flame on
ReplyDeleteCan't Leucadia have the tree canopy on 101 declared a historic monument or something -- it really is one of the most prominent defining characteristics of the area, not to mention a natural beauty. Those euks were planted during the age of expanding railroad travel and should be preserved as part of history. NCTD should replant what they kill. Euks can be managed if laced out properly so that they do not become a safety issue. There was no more beautiful drive on 101 than through Leucadia's arbored avenue framing the ocean at the north end -- it can still be.
ReplyDeleteHighway 101
ReplyDeletewhere golden dreams were spun
its arbored avenue beckoned
those who sought a gentle sun
trampled paths along a shore
to lanes upon wagon wheels borne
then rails laid for the iron horse
with trees as guides and living posts
Lofty branches shaded man and beast
as they plodded through joy or grief
Landmarks of our past and lore
reaching tall forevermore
NOT!
Last poster - I really like the poem, and I don't even read poetry. I think that should be engraved into some sort of monument as the centerpiece of our downtown redevelopment. Who is the author?
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you for the kind words, I just made that up.
ReplyDeleteExcellent poem, bondi.
ReplyDeleteEucalyptus trees have traditionally been planted along railroads. I used to live (long ago) on the other side of an alley that bordered a railroad in South Pasadena. Old growth Eucalyptus trees were planted as a wind screen, I believe BY the railroad workers.
Yes, according to the City's Public Documents, the North Coast Highway 101 Corridor Plan should protect the "viewshed" for historical landmarks, including old growth trees visible from the train. The Coastal Commission or the City could get a restraining order to stop the trees from being hacked, IF, an attorney with integrity were involved.
A few judges have integrity and good judgment too, not many, but a few. And judges are responsive to the public's love of trees and the community character they shelter.
A demolition permit should be required for any trees along the 101 corridor. A botanist should be routinely consulted, not an arborist with a two year degree and a hack saw. Our City's environmental commission needs to step up to the plate before more damage is done.
The damage has already been done to Stocks' reputation. Unfortunately Dan is our "historic" coordinator, I believe, and we are stuck with him for awhile.
Stocks has been and is acting like a loser now, and will be a loser come November.
