New Year's Sand Art
NEW YEAR'S DAY LABYRINTH AT THE BEACH Art guild member Kirkos will create one of his meditation labyriths on the sand of Stonesteps Beach in Encinitas on New Year's Day . This will be an interactive event and will take several hours to complete (1:30 to 5pm)
Guild artist Kirk "Kirkos" Van Allyn will be creating a labyrinth on the sand of Stonesteps Beach in Encinitas on New Year's Day 2009. A public access stairs offers the way to reach the beach below and participate. The labyrinth can also be viewed from the bluffs above.
The public is invited to bring gifts for the labyrinth. Items should be biodegradable such as flowers, colored stones and coarse salt. Wax candles are also an option and add a lovely touch. At the end of the evening Kirkos and Guild members have volunteered to remove the candles..

We do not need to advertise our very small beach access to a bunch of out of towners or locals either. There is no parking, facilities and we just get overrun. If some transplant wants to have an ego trip, go somewhere else like Mission Beach or Oceanside. And Kirk, don't come back. Your supposed art ain't as good as you think.

ReplyDeleteKirkos does wonderful unique and creative art that he shares with his community. I support his artistic effort and believe he adds to our artistic essence.
Don't be sad. Be supportive and enjoy and experience his efforts.
Thanks for sharing, Kevin.
Happy New Year, All.
This would never happen 10 years ago. Why all the change? Change is evil. Stop all the change.
ReplyDeleteANON 7:34 is the roundabout blog troll and has definitely jumped the shark.
ReplyDeleteKirkos' labyrinths are beautiful and bring people together. I welcome him every time he works at Tomato Patch. What a fabulous New Years gift to us all. Thank you
ReplyDeleteI'll bring the sand.
ReplyDeleteWhen you hear the phrase: "Mush for brains", that applies to most of you hippy-dippie, peace-love-dope crowd. This WAS a great place to grow up in without you. We never had to advertise.
ReplyDelete8:41-
ReplyDeleteWhats up with that comment? Hit too close to home?
Common on and live a little. In the new year take a gander and try changing your cloths more than once a week. It will make you feel more positive and people wont run from you. Try it maybe you'll learn that all change is not bad.
Peace
Kirk rules. I'll make a special effort to be there and tell everyone I know. Just watch out for the piles of poop that 5:41 leaves down there cause he doesn't like restrooms...
ReplyDeletePeace
There is no change here. Artwork has been created on the sads of Leucadia since the township was formed. Those that cast cobble should get back in their Hybrid cars and return to the OC. They probably wouldn't even know where the Neighbor Savor was, let alone the flee market, and god forbid they remember the Flower Days.
ReplyDeleteBS. The Sand should remain the way nature intended. No human intervention. Stop this nonsense and trying to change the way the sand is today. In Fact, quite saying the word CHANGE.
ReplyDeleteLets all make a promise to delete that word from our vocabulary in 2009. Thanks and Peace to you all, except Jerome and our corrupt City Attorney. They’ll never be in my positive thoughts.
The part about "bringing gifts for the labyrinth" smacks a bit of witchcraft. Surely this quasi-religious project would be just as meaningful on private property.
ReplyDeleteLooks cools. The rest of the comments are people that are the freakout types, or live near stone steps and don't want it to become as popular as Beacons
ReplyDeleteanon 333,
ReplyDeleteI wear my clothes for 3 days before washing them, unless I get hot and sweaty from dodging cars on 101.
It is the green and sustainable way to live. I conserve water, electricity, and natural gas. My carbon footprint is smaller than your big toe. You are a carbon kook and a water hog if you change your clothes everyday.
Walker O-
ReplyDeleteYou enjoy your 3 day old cloths and your carbon footprint and I will enjoy fresh cloths and appreciation from the people around me.
Walker O-
ReplyDeleteYou have a reading comprehension problem. 333 said change your cloths more than once a week, which you do. How do you know 333 don’t change their cloths every 4 or 5 days?
I suggest you take some reading comprehension courses. I will help you succeed in life.
anon 955,
ReplyDeleteYou probably "enjoy" your fresh SUV too and a wasteful live irrigated green lawn.
You just need to a little more environmental awareness.
I think the sand art is fabulous and the first comment is just that....sad.
ReplyDeleteYou are a lucky walker, Walker O.
ReplyDeleteI change my clothes every day and shower sometimes twice a day, and my friends and family still tell me that I stink.
What's your secret?
Do we really need to invite the whole county and then some to a very small beach access just to make some nuts feel good. Let's hope that its rainy, foggy, rocky and high tide.
ReplyDeletewhy do people get uptight and irritable about someone doodling in the sand on a public beach, jeesh, it's probably because their "cloths" are too tight...must be rolly-polly posting again.
ReplyDeleteI pray that all the angst of the greenies, meanies, NOarties and wanna changies stays in 2008.... or better yet moves to another coastal town.
ReplyDeleteFor those of us that remember when Netune was a quiet two land road, horses rode on the beaches and all that is good about Leucadia was, still is.
Life will continue to be as good as a chili cheese omlete cooked by Roger and served up by Susie Moore!
If you want to board the Hale-Bopp express, just be there tomorrow with all the other omlete brains. There won't be any shortage of wacko's with flowing robes and males with purses. If you miss it, there is a Kool-Aid stand at Beacons in the evening.
ReplyDelete4:38
ReplyDeleteYeah, their cloths are in a twist. But so is their ability to spell, so fear not. It's just inbred Jed.
i love this blog so much I want to bring rocks and candles to it.
ReplyDeleteI guess kirk didn't get to play with an etch-a-sketch when he was a kid. Now we have to suffer.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he can install some roundabouts on the beach tomorrow.
6:05
ReplyDeleteIt better not be withcraft! The last time they did that at a beach, Moonlight got devil ashtray sand.
Peace be in Leucadia in 2009!
ReplyDeleteSad Local, what exactly do you mean by "our very small beach access to a bunch of out of towners or locals either" ? Is this Malibu?, are you Mike Eisner?
ReplyDeleteI don't see the need to tell thousands of people that would never have found it on their own. I have no problem with tourists, they are inevitable, but myself and many others think this should have been done at a larger venue with adequate parking and facilities. See how you like it when day after day all summer long people invade your street throwing trash out, letting their dogs poop, urniating in public, and some other not nice vices, then tell me how you like it. When winter comes we have somewhat of a reprive. Plus this guy is no local, just another transplant with an ego.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to one and all!
anon 6:25 just made my whole year.
ReplyDeleteIf thousands of people show up to see the sand mandala today, I'll buy Kirk an etch-a-sketch.
ReplyDeleteSad Local needs to get together with anon 6:25 and go to counseling....
ReplyDeleteIt was somewhat cloudy, foggy, and high tide most of the day.
ReplyDeleteThere were a ton of people.
Well, I wish everyone well, but don't like the crowds, either. I do appreciate artistic expressions of creativity, and am glad that others can enjoy. I also question the "venue," but wish the artist and everyone well.
Happy New Year. Peace on Earth, and Goodwill.
We are all constantly changing, if only in that we are growing older, I hope wiser.
Someone here sure does like to have a roundabout agenda, and seems to associate anyone's not appreciating the concept of five in a row in just over two miles to be "fear of change."
Oh well. Peace anyway. Call all the names you want. It really reflects on you, not the ones you target with your criticism.
I couldn't believe how many people showed up to interact with, observe and help Kirkos with the labyrinth. There were hundreds. Creative work and glad he's getting recognition for what he loves to do.
ReplyDelete5 roundabouts in 2 miles is no big deal. The 2 on leucadia are within a 1/4 of a mile of each other and work great.
ReplyDeleteI rather the City put in roundabouts at the intersections that need some control over a stop sign or Signal. Maybe the City will drop one of the roundabouts. Hell I would love to see another all way stop go in, but that would never happen.
GOBACKTOOC sez...
ReplyDeleteMaybe Kirkos can just create a labyrinth right down 101...... that would slow down the traffic through town in an artistic manner
Sounds like the that guy at the COC calling roundabouts labyrinths again....
ReplyDeleteAnyone who doesn't like roundabouts doesn't like to slow down. Boo hoo. Use 5.
A lot of residents of town are opposed to roundabouts and the extent of the plan proposed for Leucadia, but that is not a excuse to call them names. We all want a nice plan that that the majority can get behind.
ReplyDeleteSo lets start off the new year being nice to one another and not just trashing those with different viewpoints.
Now for the maze yesterday at the beach. Way to many people make it necessary to hold it a different venue next year. Where?
The majority is behind the current plan alternative 4. I am sure it will have some minor tweaking. I could care less if they dropped one or two roundabouts. Put it a bunch of stop signs that will slow traffic.
ReplyDeleteIf you have feeling about the streetscape go to the workshops or your comments don't matter.
The plan will be supported by the majority and I bet it has roundabouts in it, because they are safer and more efficient and look better than Signals and Stop Signs.
How exactly are comments incorporated? Haven't some people made comments that are anti-roundabout? Does that mean there won't be roundabouts?
